I write this with a broken heart to let you know that my big boy, Memphis 14-193, died on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th. He died way too young as he would have turned 8 in June. He was enjoying the sunshine and beautiful day with his former puppy mill sisters. They actually fell asleep in the sun after wrestling. We came in the house and he started breathing rapidly while lying on the chair, so he moved to the couch.

I thought he was warm so I called him into the kitchen to lay where it is cooler. He had trouble walking from the couch to the kitchen so I knew there was something wrong.

I called the vet and they said they could see him in the morning, but I needed him checked out right away, so I called Blue Pearl Emergency Pet Hospital. They told me to bring him to the office and call when I got there because with this Coronavirus, I wasn’t allowed in the office. I ran to get his leash and when I returned, I saw him take his last breath!

I was told he probably had a ruptured hemangiosarcoma because he died within 20 minutes of starting the labored breathing! I still can’t believe he’s gone! We miss you Big Guy! Thank you, Diane and Fred, for letting me adopt him! RIP Memphis!

What a good young man Memphis is. He has been very well-behaved in his stay with us. He hasn't chewed anything inappropriate; he hasn't surfed any countertops; and he has settled in quite well. He is very calm for a two-year-old. He is now eating much better and he is playing with dog toys. But he still is not interested in chasing a ball. Not his thing, we guess. Ah, but the ball thrower: now, that's a different thing. It looks like the greatest plastic chew toy ever! So, the ball leaves the thrower and Memphis hangs around to get his paws (and teeth) on the thrower while the ball is left to roll away toward the fence.

Memphis normally only goes down the hallway to the bedrooms at bedtime. It's dark at bedtime, so he hasn't seen the second bedroom where our granddaughter stays when she visits. But yesterday, someone went to get something from the bedroom in the middle of the day and Memphis followed along. He glanced into the second bedroom, stopped dead in his tracks, and gave out a big bark. Now, if you were looking to record the sound of a barking dog that would frighten the pants off of an intruder, a Memphis bark is the one you'd be looking to record. It's a big, manly, authoritative bark. I had to go and see what the problem was. Memphis would creep up to the door, look in, freeze, and bark once while backing out. I couldn't tell if the problem was the pink stuffed hippo or the Hello Kitty pillow. But I guess if I suddenly came upon either of them I might be startled, too. Maybe the hippo is the most disturbing, being the bright pink that it is. Since that first encounter, Memphis has ignored both and hasn't barked since.

We knew that there would be many interested adopters for Memphis and the applications have been coming in. We have reviewed them and have found what we believe to be the perfect "forever home" for him. Memphis is Adoption Pending. He'll be neutered this week and given some recovery time, and then he is moving on to the rest of his life in his new home. He will have a stay-at-home "mom" and a puppy mill "sister" who needs his calm and his leadership. It'll be a great match.

Original initial bio:

What a handsome young boy! Memphis is a two-year-old purebred English Cream Golden Retriever. He was one of four dogs living on fenced acreage outside of town. The surrendering owners are moving into town and couldn't keep all the dogs, so he was surrendered to RAGOM.

He is a large young man at just under 90 pounds. The Veterinarian says he is in great shape; "well muscled" is the way he put it. He has been brought up to date with shots and his neutering has been scheduled for next week.

Memphis likes to be around people and appreciates attention. For a dog that has run free most of his life, we were surprised at how well he walks on a leash. He comes when called; he sits upon command, but "down" needs some work. He isn't eating as well as he should because of his change in location and schedule, but he fits in better and better with each passing day.

The neighbor's young girls came over to meet him and he followed them around just like a little puppy dog. They got along splendidly. We have not exposed him to cats, but he seems to like each and every dog that he's met. He plays well with our resident dog.

We tried throwing a ball for him. He followed it, gave it a good looking over, and returned without it. He has found the dog toy box and has selected a few that he carries around the living room. He'll pick one up at bedtime, but drop it in the hallway on his way to sleep on the floor in the bedroom.

He respects a baby gate when we've left him home alone for short periods and has not gotten into any mischief. The previous owners suggested that he might counter surf or take items out of an open trash container. They also said that he would play in his water dish. We haven't really seen any of this behavior, but he hasn't been presented with undue temptation, either.
