Sweet Kelly came to visit for the weekend so that she could meet a potential forever family. Unfortunately, it was not to be, as the resident dog of this family was just not sure that she was ready to welcome a new young pup into her cherished home. So Kelly is once again available.
While she she was only to be here for a couple days, we are delighted that she will be staying with us as her new permanent foster. Thank you to her former fosters, Jason and Antji, for taking such good care of her and allowing us to help her on the rest of her journey to find her forever home. As mentioned in previous updates, Kelly has eye entropian (a portion of the eyelid is inverted or folded inward) for which she has had one surgery, but is thought that she will need one more to completely correct this. Her appointment to see the eye specialist is at the end of May and we will then know the treatment she will receive.
In the meantime, this condition does not slow this girl down. She is happy, playful, affectionate and loving. Really, an incredibly gem. Because she did come from a breeding facitlity, she does exhibit some behaviors typical to dogs from this environment - she startles very easily, she will back away when you walk up to her head-on, and she looks to the other dogs for guidance on appropriate behaviors - however, unlike many other breeder dogs, she is actually very social and loves human touch. On her first night here, she surprised me by jumping up on the bed to sleep (generally our pups do not sleep on our bed, but on dog beds in the room), plopped her head on the pillow right next to mine and promptly fell asleep snuggled as close to me as she could get. She did not move all night long and had to roused from sleep the next morning to go out.
While she has only been here a few days, I have spoken quite a bit to her previous foster mom and dad, and here are the things this sweet girl needs in her forever home:
- A fenced-in yard (she does startle easily and will not go potty on a leash).
- A quieter household - while she does fine with children we have encountered on our walks, loud noises and lots of commotion do stress her out a bit.
- A family committed to continuing her potty training - we are working on it and at night she is fine, but she still does have accidents.
- Another larger, confident dog - while her first day here she was a bit mellow and quiet (very common while she was adapting to our household), she definitely has a playful side and wants to run and play. She is only 10 months old and her puppy energy that was not allowed to emerge when she was younger is now coming out. She is fantastic at reading other dogs' signs and is not obnoxious in asking to play, but if asked or engaged by another dog, she is all in!
- Lots of love and patience to help her become all she can be.
- Finally, a family committed to helping her lose some weight. Right now, she is a chunky monkey at 67 pounds - I would imagine she has at least 10 pounds to lose. Having said that, she does have a shorter frame, however, she is a stockier girl.
In just two short days, Kelly has wormed her way into our hearts. She is a very special girl who is looking for that very special family to call all her own.
