I'm very pleased to introduce our newest foster, Hannah. Hannah is a gorgeous 12-year-old Golden mix - she might have a bit of Black Lab in her and some have speculated a Flat-Coated Retriever might be in her family history. Hard to know. What we do know is that Hannah was a beloved family pet but due to circumstances beyond her control was not able to go with her family when they had to move. The shelter indicated the family was quite distraught but were not able to take her with them. Enter RAGOM. With a quickly arranged transport, Hannah ended her stay at the shelter and made her way to Iowa City.

Hannah has been to the vet and has passed her health exams wtih flying colors. She has been brought up to date on her shots and her blood work is good. She is on heartworm preventative (she thinks it's a treat!) and she is getting soothing meds to take care of an ear infection she picked up along the way. She's had a spa treatment at the groomers and her coat just shines. She's sporting a bandana that the groomer gave her that gives her a jaunty look.

Hannah knows a lot of things -- in addition to the basic sit and shake, she also knows with great accuracy when it's time to eat and gets quite excited about it. For a 12-year-old girl, she's got a spunky soft bark to remind you that you need to feed her and in the morning (she eats twice a day). She includes her happy dance, a very endearing ritual. She has a good appetite and enjoys her senior dog food with great relish. Right now, we're putting some probiotics on her evening meal to help her tummy cope with all the changes she's been through. We'll probably stop the probiotics soon since everything seems to be good but it took her a bit of time to get used to our dog food.

Hannah is definitely a creature of routine. She has figured out our household and who might be a soft touch to give her an extra treat. She has charming ways of reminding you that she's waiting for a treat - and she takes them very gently.

I think Hannah must have been walked on a leash - the leash is one of her very favorite things. When she first joined our household, she clearly wanted us to put her leash on even though she was walking in our fenced yard. The leash must be a very powerful, positive memory for her.

So, what kind of home is Hannah looking for? We believe Hannah will do best in a quiet house without any young children and she should be an only dog. Hannah is friendly with other dogs but does not like the excitement and hustle bustle of young dogs or any dog that gets between her and her treats. Hannah does not do any resource guarding with her food - you can reach in her dish or even take her food away and she's just fine.

Hannah is ready for her new home. She's just gorgeous, good in the car, and handles stairs well. If you're looking for a quiet, well-mannered dog who just wants to follow you everywhere, she's your girl!

Hannah continues to enjoy these cooler days and doesn’t seem bothered at all by the light snow we received yesterday. She’s always anxious to go outside, or go for a ride, or just hang with her peeps. She’s now so comfortable in our routine that she knows it’s okay to get up on the couch and settle in for a snooze. We’ve been doing a bit of painting in the living room and her lovely black coat now bears a white ‘swoosh’ on it where she managed to lean on the freshly painted woodwork while we weren’t watching. A little brushing will take care of it in no time.

Hannah’s favorite activity is still going for walks, although that’s a bit more difficult to weave into our routines now that it’s dark earlier. Just the sight of the leash perks her up and makes her hopeful. She loves a good meal and an occasional treat, but then who doesn’t?!?

Contact your Placement Advisor if you have a place in your home for this lovely senior girl. She’s got the best handshake in town and there’s no one who enjoys being with her people more than Miss Hannah.

I have to start by thanking Terry for supporting Hannah! So very nice! Hannah’s fan club is growing and that’s nice to see!

Our family took a very late vacation this year, and when we came back, it was lovely dog-walking weather. Hannah has been enjoying her evenings walks way more than what we expected. She isn’t interested in taking a long walk, but she is so excited about going that it’s great fun to see. She gets bouncy (great to see a senior girl really happy happy happy!) and walks proudly on her leash, leading the way until she just gets so happy that she has to turn around and come back to me and do a bouncy, happy step. My guess is that going for walks were very special times for Hannah and just seeing the leash brings that memory back to life for her. She sniffs eagerly and has good leash manners. We don’t walk her for long distances since one of her rear legs seems a bit weaker than the other. We’re going to talk with the vet next time we’re in and see if the walk might actually be a good way to build more strength for Hannah. She clearly loves it and it brings her immense joy.

You can see from the photos that Hannah is showing us some new behaviors now that she’s *really* comfortable. For the longest time, she had stayed off the furniture, but one evening while we were all in the living room, she came over and made eye contact with me and slowly got up on the couch. It was if she thought I might not notice if she just kept me occupied. We’re OK with dogs on the furniture in our house and I think it’s great that she’s settling in and getting comfy.

While we were on vacation, Hannah was boarded in a very nice kennel. Somehow, she had words with one of the other dogs and did some snarling. Unfortunately for Hannah, she picked a dog that snarled right back, and she ended up having to go to the vet for some stitches on her ear. This makes us even more certain that Hannah needs to go to a household with no other dogs. She enjoys other dogs, but every once in a while, you can see that she’s uncomfortable and she gives clear warning signals that other dogs should leave her alone. She has become accustomed to our resident dogs and they’ve all developed an understanding that now seems to work quite well.

Hannah is on no medications and she doesn’t require any special care. She needs a family that will fold her into their routines and who will enjoy petting her and giving her special ear scrunches and an occasional treat. And, I almost forgot, she will love you instantly if you take her for a walk! Hannah has a lovely deep black coat that shines in the sun and doesn’t she have a great profile?! Who wouldn’t love this girl!

A mature dog is just so easy to live with and Hannah really shows that every day. She loves to sleep in on a three-day weekend but willingly gets up very early on a work day. For Hannah, it’s all about being with her people and making sure that she doesn’t miss mealtime! Pretty simple and easy. Morning is her happy time and she’s very bouncy and upbeat and anxious to please. This morning, she woke me up with a quick kiss on my chin and since that didn’t make me jump out of bed, she did it again. She has her favorite places to sit and enjoy what’s going on around her and some places where she can get away from the young dogs and enjoy a good nap. The young resident dogs have taken to dashing out the back door in hopes of chasing a bunny and now Hannah has joined them in the thrill of the hunt. No one catches anything and Hannah is certainly the last one in the romp, but she is clearly enjoying herself. Now that she’s been here long enough to get comfortable, she has developed her own special barkfest with the neighbor dog. No harm done, just something that seems to add a thrill to the day.

You may be hesitant to inquire about Hannah, I understand, she’s not a young dog – but you just need to meet her to see that she’s still a very happy dog, just more calm and mellow than those younger dogs who tear through the house. She likes to follow her people around and doesn’t mind if you want to sit and read a book, that’s just perfect for her. And if you want to garden, why, that’s perfect too. She’s not excited about the heat we’ve been having, but as the temperatures have dropped again, she’s enjoying her time outside in the fenced yard, exploring the hillside and special smells. Hannah has impeccable household manners and goes all night without having to go outside. She doesn’t jump on the furniture and she doesn’t jump on people, although I bet she did both of those things when she was younger. At this stage, she gets bouncy happy instead of jumpy happy. When there’s something she wants, she sits in front of you, gazes at you meaningfully, and shakes hands until you give in or just tell her no.

Hannah is looking for a house with older children where she can be an only dog. If that describes your household, please contact your Placement Advisor. Hannah is a lovely girl

Hannah is settling in nicely and really starting to enjoy herself - you can see the difference in her from the minute she wakes up until she calls it quits for the day. She's much more bouncy and even downright peppy - words you don't often get to use to describe a 12-year-old dog. She really appreciates a routine and I think that's probably what's behind this newfound spunky behavior. She knows what to expect and has relaxed a bit more each day.

She absolutely loves her morning treats and that definitely gets her primed for breakfast and then possibly a good nap after she's had a chance to roam around our fenced back yard. She likes to oversee any gardening projects and enjoys a good barkfest now and again when the neighbor dogs come out. On the really hot days, she heads back indoors quickly and seeks out the best napping spot where she can also keep an eye on all the comings and goings and be ready to run to the window if there's a dog walking down her sidewalk. While she has a soft bark in the morning to urge us to get her breakfast, she has a full-throated bark for dogs walking by. She seems to love the excitement of it all.

Hannah has also had the opportunity to go shopping in our favorite pet store where she tried to help herself to a toy from a well-placed bin. She gave up the toy readily without any fuss -- very nice behavior. Hannah has also developed a very coy begging ritual while we're eating. Although we haven't given in to her, my guess is that she's probably been quite successful in her past. She has a very endearing wide-eyed grin with her ears up that is particularly fetching. If that doesn't convince you to share your meal, she will shake hands, alternating paws and making every effort to win you over. She evenutally gives up, but you can't blaim the girl for trying!

Hannah definitely enjoys a belly rub and some gentle grooming - any attention from her peeps seems to please her greatly. She's just recently started to enjoy chewing on a toy in the evening, not a bad way to end the day. Hannah is not a high energy dog, she could fit in nicely in a smaller house. She will be most successful in a house where she's the only dog and where there are no small children. If you think she'd be a good match for your household, please contact your Placement Advisor.
