Dre 13-112

Dre is a large, magnificent golden retriever. Large in 107#. His personality is ‘large’ as well. Our boy came to us a week ago unaltered and no vaccinations and horribly dirty. He also came with a huge mass on his chest and towards his front two legs. His teeth are wore down and he did have a painful abscessed front canine. I am thankful we kept our large wire crate!

Dre is 12 years old – birthday is May 1, 2001. As you will see from the photos, he looks about 6 and it is truly hard to believe that is his age. Other than the above, Dre is in very good health. No hip issues, no other issues that we are aware of; his blood work came back fine. Heartworm negative which is a bonus because he was mostly kept outside. He came from a home with another dog and children.

Since he has come into our care, he has been to my groomer (Bless you Ronita and gang!) and cleaned up so nice. Now when you see Dre out in the sun, he no longer stinks, your hands don’t turn dark brown and this boy has the most stunning coat! Cannot say just how beautiful it really is………dark sorrel – red with very shiny copper highlights. Ever so slight gray on his muzzle, but barely any. His coat is nice and thick; and he did just fine for the gals at the grooming (he had never had one before). So that was a huge step. [I have such a fantastic groomer and she ‘donates’ these baths and grooming(s) for Ragom, not to mention she also has events where she has raised money for Ragom as well].

He has had 2 vet visits. The first of which was to just get him vaccinated and looked over. During that it was discovered that the front canine was abscessed and broken off and many teeth are wore down, and the mass, not sure what it was, really needed to come off due to size and location, which are all things that could be done while he also needed to be neutered as well. He behaved fine at the vet, just a little ‘worried’ and didn’t want treats or anything. The mass in the front was about the size of a salad plate and very ‘leathery.’ Cannot really get a photo of it due to the area and totally covered with his hair. Considering all the poking and prodding he did just fine.

The second visit a few days later was the neuter, tooth extraction and mass removal. Happy to report all went wonderful. The mass was a little over 2# which is HUGE and it was just a lipoma (fatty growth) and no signs of any melanoma at all, yahoo! The surgery was long and went well. It has just been a couple days now and he is doing fine. His pills for pain and antibiotics, etc. go in his food and he eats them right up. He is doing amazing for just having all that done. The incisions looks good. He does not like having his mouth checked as I am sure it is still quite sore therefore I just leave it alone. He will have a re-check and suture removal in 12-14 days.

Dre stats:

  • 12 years old
  • Neutered, UTD, HW negative, frontlined, and on HW treatment. He is also microchipped.
  • He is BIG BOY coming in at 107#
  • He is very good (and submissive) with our 2 resident dogs (corgi and border collie/eskie mix)
  • He is good with cats
  • He loves LOVES his pets, and is still ‘needy’ I think from no prior attention
  • He enjoys car ride
  • He walks well on a leash
  • He has had NO accidents in home; tried to mark first day and half but all is well now

More to come on this fantastic, big hunk of a golden…..he is going to make a fantastic companion. He could be an only dog or not. He is so SHY of the camera so I fear my photos are not the best. The camera and the click of the camera really makes him shy away, even if he ‘thinks’ you have it! Not sure why but we do our best.....

After less than 2 years with this beautiful boy, it is with great sadness that we inform you of Dre's passing on 2/25/15. He gave us so much joy and happiness in the short time he decided to share our home with us. Even though he is no longer with us in body, his spirit will forever be in the air we breathe. We are selfish in the wish that he were still with us, but happy for him in that he is with all his 'buddies' at the 'Rainbow Bridge'.

Thank you Ragom for all you do and especially for letting us share our time with this beautiful Golden.

Yesterday was quite the “mother’s day” for our big boy, Dre, and for me. The most wonderful family drove 300+ miles to meet and ultimately adopt this magnificent golden, whom we so loved to foster. What a perfect match, and one which was obvious, meant to be. A family who is very dedicated to Ragom and the golden rescues, and to a golden boy named Dre, who so deserves so much. A boy who came into our rescue, so needed to be bathed/groomed (never had been!); needed to have a ‘huge’ mass removed from his chest ( about 6-8” in size and felt like leather, and ended up just under 3 pounds once removed). A horrible abscessed front canine extracted (cannot imagine the pain); and on top of that, needed to be neutered.

This fantastic golden boy will have the luxury of “mom” working from home 24/7, dad who takes his dogs everywhere and adores them so much, and a place which is so beautiful and has acres of trees, creek and much beauty to be his ‘forever’ home. One that will be so filled with love, respect, patience and admiration for Dre, this ‘rescued golden boy’ who, came into Ragom’s care, [which we are so blessed to have in re-homing these magnificent golden retrievers] can be so happy and healthy the rest of his life. This family is just as incredible as our foster Dre. As you can see from the photo, ‘mom’ and ‘the big guy’ have made a connection from the get-go. Dad really ‘fell’ for him and quickly joined in his admiration and connection. I could not have asked for a better day J …a great golden—and -- a great family. THIS is why we do what we do. Rod and Pam, it was a truly a great pleasure to meet you, and Dre, we are really going to miss you, you big lug! Hugs big Buddy…….big hugs…… we love you♥

PS: [To DRE: I would have inserted a photo of one of the many, many times you and I hugged and loved BUT you HATE the camera! Miss you big boy, but wow, did you find the jackpot of a forever home!!!!!………… Love, FM]

This last week Dre has his re-check at the vet’s office for suture removal from the large mass which was taken off. He did so well there and I am sure very glad to have those itchy threads removed. Everything looks just fine. A nice surprise is that Dre went from 107# to 99#! That was great news. The place where his right front canine was removed is also healing; that will remain slower to heal due to location (these large canine removals leave a really big space in the beginning). His coat is so beautiful. I just wish I could get him to relax and tolerate me trying to get better photos of him. He is so stunning in the sun and as all goldens do, loves a nice roll in the yard.

He does better and better on his walks and he really enjoys them. Dre just really enjoys being outside just to hang out on the deck, be by you when you rake or mow, or play with one of the other resident dogs out in the yard. He too enjoys his rides in the truck just to see what else is going on in the world. He does fine when someone new comes to the door. \

We have seen no anxieties at all (other than the darn camera!). He loves hard-boiled eggs. He sleeps quiet during the night and has our routine down perfectly. He has free roam now. With the other resident dogs here, he still prefers to eat in his crate. An assumption could be made that prior to coming into Ragom, there was another dog and perhaps he got tired of sharing? Hard to say but it makes him comfortable to have a more ‘safe’ spot to eat with the others around. We cannot say enough wonderful things about this magnificent big boy. He so loves his human. We really enjoy fostering this golden boy.J

As you can see from the recent photo, Dre does very well with children. Always wanting to be pet like a typical golden. The grandkids are 8 and 6 and they all enjoyed each other. It was a wonderful weekend. He and I also were able to take a walk to where I work which is close by and Dre got to meet and greet about 15 staff members and he did fabulous. Everyone in total agreement that he is a gentle, big boy who looks and acts about 6 or 7. Dre so loved all the pets and attention he received! Very good behaviors and I was very impressed. Lots of tail wags. So now Dre has been exposed to several different situations/scenarios and he is one wonderful golden retriever. Now to find his forever home, is that you? Please contact your placement advisor if you are interested in this fantastic boy.

Dre has now been neutered, had his right front [abscessed] tooth removed, and a large mass on his chest removed. What an ordeal for him. The great news is there are no cancer(s) at all regrading the mass. It was a huge fatty tumor (lipoma) and amazingly, it was just under 3 pounds… so quite large. (Took up a big part of chest and between front legs-I have a photo). What a big relief to have this all behind him. An incredibly long day for Dre. He handled things great and he is very healthy boy! [It is unfortunate that these issues were very avoidable].

Now he is safe in Ragom's care and our ‘big’ golden boy has had the way overdue vet care he needed and deserves. We now have a beautiful, healthy and fully vetted big, beautiful golden who will find that ‘right’ forever home I am sure as he is just gorgeous inside and out.

With all of the medical needs with this great golden boy, we are most grateful and dependent on sponsors and donations to help with these magnificent rescue goldens and help with the costs of their care. Can you help? More to come on this wonderful senior golden boy.
