December 24, 2012

Dear Santa,

Well it is Christmas Eve and I am writing to you on this special night to let you know I have moved residences so you can bring my presents to the correct address. You see, we were rescued by RAGOM on December 13th, along with a bunch of other dogs. My sister Ruby 12-416 and I got to stay a couple of nights with Kim J., our first two nights inside a nice warm loving home. We then moved to our foster home where we have been for the past week. We will be staying here for a while until we can find new families of our own that will love each of us for life.

I am 5 months old and some people told me our birthdate is July 4, 2012: apparently that is another big holiday to celebrate. I am a whopping 31 pounds so far but have some growing to do to become a big strong girl. Everyone that meets me says I am just precious and sweet.

When we arrived at our foster home, there were five other dogs here. Two are my size and three are bigger. I was a little scared with all of the changes the previous three days and all of this human interaction. The first dog to meet me did snarl a bit, but the humans thought it was because she misinterpreted my lip injury for a snarl since the first puppy loves everyone.

We met the resident dogs one by one to get to know each other. Within an hour or so, all seven of us were all running around the yard chasing each other! All the humans were so happy to see Ruby and I being happy playful puppies. After all of that exercise, we both got a nice warm bath and snuggle time with Kelly, Kris, and Karen.

I am quickly teaching everyone that you can't judge a book by its cover. I sustained some type of injury a while ago, probably from some sharp objects, and a chunk of my lip is missing so my teeth and tongue show. Ruby has a similar injury but not as severe. One present I am getting in January will be surgery to repair my lip from a wonderful surgeon named Dr. R. I need the surgery to help make sure I do not develop oral problems down the road as my mouth and exposed teeth would dry out a lot. Here is a picture of my lip.

I do shy away from people when they reach for me because I am not always sure about them. However, FM says I am making huge strides in trusting people this week. I will take treats very gently and am starting to approach FM to get petted because I see Ruby and the other dogs doing that and they seem to enjoy that quite a bit. I do admit, I am starting to like being snuggled!

Ruby and I have adjusted really well to indoor life. We are not afraid of loud noises and even like to snooze on the couch after playtime and watch the big TV with everyone. We learned how to do the stairs our second night here. Ruby took to it pretty fast. I was a bit slower. After watching all of the dogs go up and down several times, they stayed down there out of sight and I started to cry for Ruby to come back. She was busy investigating so I finally got up enough courage to slowly slink down the stairs. FM gave me lots of kisses and "Good Girls" for my valiant triumph! I successfully went up and down a few more times that night. Now I am a pro at it!

Other than being a bit unsure of humans, I am a brave and inquisitive girl. I love to be outside running in the snow and chewing on twigs. A good game of chase usually happens a few times too and I like to take toys away from Ruby. FM calls me Jewel Thief! We crate up pretty well and do not protest...much. We are in the crate when FM is at work and someone comes at lunch to feed us and play with us. At night, we are in a crate in the bedroom and we sleep 7+ hours without so much as a peep from either of us until FM is ready to get up and let us out. We RUN to the door to go outside too!

Here is a pic of us chilling out in the crate. I am the gorgeous one on the left.

Well Santa, that is my story so far. Just wanted to make sure you knew where Ruby and I had gone.

What we would like for Christmas is a few chew toys to put in our stockings FM got us (we are chewing puppies after all). Additionally, if you could spread the word to your friends that Ruby and I will have surgery in the middle of January and could use some financial help to pay for that, we would appreciate that as well.

There is no chimney here for you to come down, so you can leave the presents anywhere and we will sniff them out! You can always wake us up to give a hugs too!

Love,
Jewel

Updates

Sunday, June 7, 2020

There is a new angel in heaven tonight across the Rainbow Bridge. Sweet Jewel, just shy of her 8th birthday that would have been on July 4th. Sadly, renal failure took her from us way too soon.

Jewel 12-415

Jewel and her sister Ruby were rescued by RAGOM on December 13, 2012 from a really bad situation along with a number of other dogs. They were timid and shy 5 month olds that had never known love or physical comfort before their day of rescue. Their whole world changed for the better that cold winter day.

Jewel and Ruby had sustained significant facial damage and had never received any medical attention prior to their rescue. RAGOM was there for them the whole way. The wonderful Dr. R was able to perform multiple surgeries to give each of the girls a new beautiful smile to go with their new lives.

Jewel was my foster for 7 months before finding her forever family. Ruby found her family at 5 months. Everyday was an adventure with them. They both loved living in a house, playing and wrestling with each other and my resident dogs, and getting into so much mischief. Jewel especially was a force to be reckoned with!

I was very fortunate to be able to keep in touch with Jewel and see her for sleepovers, birthday parties and babysitting. Each time she came back it felt like she never left...comfortable and familiar, right at home. And the hugs she would dole out were the best!

She had an indomitable spirit for such a little girl that overcame much of her rough beginnings. It never ceases to amaze me how some dogs that have been so mistreated by humans can learn to trust the good humans and generously give their love away.

Thank you RAGOM for rescuing her and allowing me the privilege to foster her and help her find her forever family. Thank you to the boots on the ground rescuers Denise, Kelly, Kris and Karen in what was an emotionally and physically difficult rescue that will never be forgotten. The RAGOM Village really stepped up for these girls in so many ways.

I know Jewel and Ruby's story has touched so many people inside RAGOM and many fell in love and supported them in their journey. Thank you for being a part of that story.

Jewel sadly lost her dad in March 2020.  Jewel had been staying with a family friend who had known Jewel since her adoption day. Thank you Kate for also loving this incredible girl and providing her so much love during her time with you.

Jewel 12-415

Run Free over the Bridge, Jewel. Though my heart is breaking, I am sure you and your dad are having a very sweet reunion, laughing and running through fields and swimming in the most incredible lakes. You will always be remembered and carried in my heart and the hearts of so many others. -FM

Hi Everyone!  You're favorite crooked-nose-smile Jewel her giving you an update on my life for the past few weeks.  It has been very busy to say the least.  I attended many meet and greets and had a blast as usual.  I love meeting all of the dogs at the events and giving people my patented hugs too.

One of my favorite toys is the horse-sized jolly ball.  I keep bringing it in and out of the house.  Even when it is dirty, I bring it up on the couch so I can chew the handle.

I also had the opportunity to go play in a big fenced area with my foster-sisters and some friends.   While my foster-sisters are crazy ball fetchers, I really want to play with other dogs and sometime sniff around.  Check out this awesome smile and my goofy ears as I was running back with Krae.

In the past eight weeks since Ruby was adopted, I have really grown in the snuggle department.  Without Ruby to play with all the time, I decided it would be cool to spend more time snuggling with FM.  She said I even developed something called the "Golden Nudge".  Whenever she would stop petting me, I would use my nose nudge to say "More Please!"  Oh how FM really loves that.

But the best news of all is I am officially ADOPTED!  My new dad Mike just loves me to pieces already.  I was supposed to be adopted over a week ago, but those nasty storms that came through 2 weekends ago took their toll on the new fence he put up for me, so he had to get that all fixed up.

So I hung out here and played for a week and then Saturday went to Pet-A-Palooza.  As FM was walking us to the RAGOM booth, Ruby ran out to meet me and as soon as we all saw her, we pulled FM as fast as we could to see my girl!  Oh we have such a good time together!

Here Ruby and I are playing with Brinkley (aka Doozer 13-109) at Pet-A-Palooza.

After some playtime and socializing, FM and Dad finished up the necessary paperwork to make it all official.  I am now a member of the M Family and have a dad and a new fursister Charlie.  And guess what, Charlie is a goldendoodle just like my foster-sisters!  And she looks so much like Krae I just might get confused a bit. Anyway, Charlie is a bit of a people-person, so my first task is to teach her that playing with me is going to be a ton of fun!  I will also have other puppers in my life -- one in particular is Phoebe who is another lucky RAGOM girl (golden retriever) that was adopted by dad's friend 6 years ago.

Here is my first forever-family picture!

Dad has a cabin up north on a lake so I think this is a match made in heaven.  I will get to swim to my hearts content - cuz you know I go bonkers for water!  I will get my first lake opportunity over the 4th of July, which just happens to be my and Ruby's birthday.  Lucky, lucky me!

Since Ruby and I will both be busy with our families over the 4th, we will be getting together a little later to have our birthday celebration with our new families and foster-sisters, foster-cousins, Joy 12-418 (now adopted too!) and other RAGOM puppers we have had the pleasure of meeting and playing with during our time in fostercare.

I am so excited to start a new chapter in my life. My new family promises to keep me in contact with Ruby and my foster family too.

I have quite a few Thank You's to say.

First and foremost, to RAGOM for rescuing me and my sister, Ruby, and a whole bunch of other needy dogs last December 13th. Without them and all of you wonderful people that financially support RAGOM's mission, our futures would not be so bright like they are now.

To my rescue moms and dad, Karen, Denise, Kris, and Kelly, for making the long journey to pick us up, getting us to our foster home and letting us have sleepovers with your fur-kids.

To the awesome Dr. R for life-changing surgery to repair our faces from the injuries we sustained and give us Golden Smiles; you are a true angel for animals in need.

To Uncle Chip and Amy L. for the countless number of hours you spent with us playing outside at lunchtime while FM was at work these past seven months.

To Jean and Joy 12-418 and Baylee, Konnie, Angie and Dayle for letting us hang out at your houses to have new experiences and grow in confidence.

And lastly to our foster-sisters, Kraelyn and Lilly, and foster-cousins, Pippi, Ella and Macie, and FM for letting us share your home, teaching us how to transition to indoor dogs and live in a safe home, sharing beds, toys, food and treats. Foster homes are the critical link to helping rescue dogs find our forever homes.

You have all played a significant part in helping us on our journey to become the dogs we were meant to be -- confident, trusting of humans, fun-loving, and most of all, LOVED. I vow to return that LOVE and paw-it-forward ten-fold.

Thank you all for following my story for the past seven months. I will be off on new adventures living the Golden Life, swimming, shredding papers, bugging my new sister and stealing her toys.  I wonder if anyone told her my fullname is Jewel Thief...

Love to all my fans,

Jewel

Hey Everyone,FM finally got my video of me going nuts in the pool from last weekend uploaded.  Check this video out!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqJBQGxSyasOn Thursday night, I had the pleasure of hosting little 12 week old Brandy 13-143 for a sleep over.  It was lots of fun because she likes to play, but oh, are those little puppy razor teeth sharp! Here we are sharing a quiet moment.  I was assuring her that her nose, while not picture perfect, is nothing to be ashamed of.  Trust me, I know of such nose-related things!  If you have time, to check out her page.  She is an absolute lover of a puppy!
Yesterday was a great day too because I got to go to another Meet and Greet and hang out with my sister Ruby!  I was happy to see her and gave her many, many kisses.  I even gave her new brother Sam kisses too.
And if that is not enough, FM bought us an Agility Tunnel to play in.  I am already a champ at this!  I hope I get to go to Agility Classes some day!
I hope you are having a great week!  I am just waiting for that silly sun to come out too.Jewel

Hi Everyone,

With the warmer weather, my inner-water dog has emerged. If I can't play outside in the pool, I make my own fun in the bathtub. Here I am wondering why the water keeps escaping. I took out the clanky metal drain pluggy thingamabob and put it on the bed in the bedroom just like Ruby taught me. I love to paw at the water and stick my whole head under the waterfall. I get totally drenched when my nose is exploring all of the smells in the drain line.

My FM said that she will try to get some video of me playing in the pool this weekend because she says that I am super funny when I jump in and out like a bunny rabbit and get the zoomies.

There's never a dull moment around here, well, ok, sometimes there is, but that's ok. My foster sisters both had a littermate come for a sleepover. Tanner is a fetching maniac like Kraelyn and Luci is a cuddlebug like Lilly. I kinda felt like I was in the Land of the Doodle Giants! Here's the gang mugging for a photo. I was so tired I could barely keep my eyes open. It was a long day of me going to a board meeting, Meet and Greet and then playtime at home with the doodles.

The next day, I got to go have a play date with Kraelyn and another one of her littermates, Leia. After that we went over to play with my girl Ruby in her new home. Talk about a major sibling weekend! We had a blast running all over the place as she showed me everything in her new home as fast as puppy-possible. Of course, we wrestled like crazy too. Ruby's new brother Sam was a bit jealous of us wrestling, so he was barking and barging in. Ruby and Sam play together really well. I think they love each other already!

Here are a few of pictures of us after we settled down a little bit. Ruby's dad took lots of photos of us. Plenty of ear kisses given and received.

In my spare time, I have been auditioning for Extreme Makeover - Doggy Bed Edition. Here I am putting on the finishing touches one of the outdoor beds.

And then the big reveal.....and reaction...

Ya know, I think she actually liked it! At least I did. Now that is my favorite outdoor bed because I can put the tennis ball in the holes and then roll on the bed and try to get it back with my paw. I'm quite limber at my tender age.

After that super busy weekend, I took a much needed nap in a comfy chair. It was a very quiet evening in the house as all of us dogs happily dreamt of the fun we had.

Well, that brings you up-to-date with me. FM is really hoping that the rain will go away because I like running around in the mud just as much as the water! (That is actually a strategy I came up with, get dirty so FM has to turn on the hose to clean me up, which turns into more water-playtime! Yes, I am THAT SMART!)

Love ya,

Jewel

Young athletic petite medium golden girl seeking that special someone to share their life and love completely.  I have big brown eyes that twinkle and a gorgeous smile.  Not ashamed to say I have had 2 plastic surgeries to achieve that smile.

Fun loving and easily makes new furry friends. Knows how to share toys and show you my mischievous side.

Enjoys snuggling in bed for pillow talk and reading (err, shredding) the newspaper, magazines or bills.  Loves to give full body hugs when you are sitting on the ground or stand on you when lying in bed.

Loves long walks and racing through puddles many, many times. Not afraid to get dirty and wrestle in the mud and then get in the bathtub to freshen up.  Would love to try swimming in a lake as I can't get far in the kiddie pool. Would also like to try boating and laying out on a dock.

Sensitive and empathetic; ready to help friends in need.

Enthusiastic eater yet I maintain my girlish figure.  I enjoy refreshing cold beverages (from the bathtub faucet).

Adventuresome and spontaneous -- ready on a moments notice for road trips, errands or anything else you might have in mind.  Loves traveling by car and enjoying the scenery and fresh air.  You won't be waiting around for me to freshen up my makeup, I'm naturally beautiful and it shows.

Happy to watch all sports and nature shows on TV and will bring you your slippers so you are fully relaxed. Will even put away shoes you left out -- to places I feel are appropriate.

Security-minded - will let you know if something is amiss outside or animals on TV attempt to invade your home.

If you are that special someone that appreciates a fine young woman for her fun-loving and tender heart, please contact your placement advisor and ask for Jewel, the one with the winning smile.  I promise to share your love with another confident dog (30+ pounds) and not be jealous.

Jewel

Hi Everyone,

I hope all of you are enjoying your spring! Now that all of the snow is gone in the backyard and it has dried out somewhat from all the mud, FM is MUCH happier!

I have been a very busy girl attending a lot of Meet and Greets around town the last few weeks. Here I am drawing people in at a recent event.

Besides the M&G's, Ruby, my foster sisters, new friend Bree, and I took a super fun road trip to New Ulm to play with Max 12-380, Grizz, Skye and Scout. We had such a blast running around in the 70+ degree weather and playing in the kiddie pool. I am so going to be a water dog! I love to play in the water coming out of hoses and faucets too. (Our foster sisters taught us how to drink from the tub faucet.)

After the road trip, we had another fun day Sunday playing from 6:30am to 2:00pm. Then I had to C-R-A-S-H!

FM took down the crate in the bedroom last week. Ruby and I would still cuddle in there but FM wasn't closing the door. Now Ruby likes to sleep on a body pillow by the wall and the bed by foster sister Lilly and I like to cuddle on the bed with foster sister Krae and FM and love all the pillows. I sleep really well on the bed all night and don't move around. It makes it very easy for FM in the morning to give me lots of kisses and whisper in my ear.

Another favorite past-time is performing neighborhood watch duties. Here I am (standing) with Ruby as we give our foster sisters a break.

I have been resting up this week because I know this weekend will be busy with activities too. I will be going to the Meet & Greet in Blaine on Saturday and then on Sunday to the volunteer meeting so I can meet even more RAGOM kids!

I am still looking for my forever home, so contact your placement advisor if you would like to meet me!

Love Ya All!

Hi everyone! Just reporting in with two new pictures of how well my face is healing up. FM says my outer beauty matches my inner beauty! This is 4.5 weeks post-surgery #2. The fur on my face is filling in very nicely. FM rubs Vitamin E oil on it nightly, which I don't really like, but it comes with treats and hugs so I don't protest too much.

I have one more week to go of not chewing on toys, though I sneak some toys behind FM's back. However, Ruby is intent on taking every toy away from me the second I get one so I never have it for very long. I think she is in cahoots with FM.

This wet cold spring has been very dirty. I love running around in the MUD in the backyard! And with the new Spring snow yesterday and today, it is a blast sliding around. I am totally a water dog too! Running through puddles is quite refreshing and entertaining. I would love to try a lake or swimming pool too! But for now, the bath tub will have to suffice. I am getting lots of experience this spring because Ruby and I get all muddy and FM has to carry us in the house. She usually bathes me first because I will stay in the tub while she rounds up Ruby. After the baths, we get the blow dry treatment. I must say I rather like getting pampered, yet I am totally a tom-boy (despite the pink harness you see in my photos)!

We have also been going on lots of outings and walks. Here is me retrieving FM's boots to let her know it is walk-time.

We love going for car rides and are really good too. FM even gets us out for walks with our foster sisters. Ruby and I are on opposite sides and I love to keep checking in on her. The problem with that is I keep crossing in front of FM and tripping her up to get to Ruby! If we were on the same side, there would be wrestling going on. So for some of the walks, I get to go with FM and one of my foster sisters and I do great too.

When on walks, if I see another dog, I do bark at him/her because I want to meet the other dog and play so bad and . I am told I will get some walks with just me and FM this weekend to see how I do and so we can work on that. FM says I just need to develop a little patience. Rumor has it FM will have a big bag of soft tasty treats to help distract me. I already know I am going to love it!

Ruby and I like to carry around her boots, shoes, and slippers too (one of our foster sisters and foster cousins taught us that retrieving skill). For FM's birthday last month, Ruby and I made her an open toe sandal. We were resourceful (think Green!) and converted a well worn leather slipper into the sandal. We were careful to keep a lot of coverage for toe protection, so only the top of 2 toes shows through. Yes, we are that thoughtful.

Besides walks, outings and playing in the backyard, we keep ourselves busy with our wrestling matches. 9 times out of 10, I am on top of Ruby.

Here are a couple of links to videos of us playing. Fun with all the dogs! Ruby and I love to play together! I like to watch these on the computer with FM and bark. Foster sister Lilly taught me to watch the computer and TV.

As for the medical stuff, I had my heartworm test last Saturday and that was negative. So no more medical stuff for me for a long time! Yea! Though I really loved going to see Dr. R and give her hugs, so I will miss that. I do still have a tiny ear infection in my left ear so we are working on keeping that cleaned out.

Special hugs and kisses out to Judith C. for the Valentine's Icon! Sorry we didn't see those before. We have been having some technical difficulties with my page.

Ruby and I will be at Chuck and Don's Edina for the Meet and Greet this coming Sunday April 14th. I sure hope I meet my forever family there! I still have the same requirements of needing another large confident dog, no kids under 12 and a physical fence. If you think that could be you, please come see me and contact your placement adviser too!

Love to all my fans!

Hi everyone!

Well, I had my second facial plastic surgery on Monday.  I just wanted to give you a quick 411 on how it went.

As you can see from the picture, I have new body art!  FM calls it the Mark of Zorro!  Actually, I have two Z's.  Dr. R. performed two Z-plasties on my face. The second one is closer to the nose and lip and a little harder to see in the picture. So now FM has given me the nickname of Za-Zorro! Get it?!?  Ha Ha

The goal of this second surgery was to release a little more scar tissue and more more skin forward and down to give my face a more relaxed and softer look.  Also, during the healing process over the last eight weeks, there was a little retraction by the front and a couple of teeth were exposed and the skin was pretty taught.  So hopefully this will fix those issues and that was my last procedure.

So as with the last surgery, I am on a six week restriction for chewing on toys.  Also, there won't be any rough housing with Ruby or my foster sisters and cousins either.  Big Bummer. So I get to spend more one-on-one time with FM. It will be tough especially with spring coming, but I did it before so I know I can do it again!  I am such a trooper and my FM keeps telling me that. FM promises me that I will get special walks by myself with her to help relieve the boredom. Maybe even some special car trips too.

Before my surgery, Ruby and I went to Rescue Dad Kelly's to have a sleepover and play with his pack again.  We did our best to help prune the shrubs and raspberry plants and kept sneaking into the muddy garden too.  I am very fond of all things water!  We also spent time trying to comfort little Isabelle and help her to be brave.  RD says it did help her to see us happy playful pups from the same mill.  Another fun part was being able to sleep on the big bed with RD and the other 5 dogs. So it is safe to say that Ruby and I love to travel now. Oh the fun places we get to go!

Well, this is a short update this time and I will be low key for a bit as I go through the healing process.  However, I am still available to meet potential forever families, so if you are interested in meeting me, please contact your placement advisor!

Bye for now,

Jewel, aka Za-Zorro!

Hi everyone, it me Jewel sending in an update.  Yes, yes, FM is really behind again in getting an update posted. Our foster-cousins came to stay with us for a couple of weeks so the 7 puppers kept her hopping!  We play and play from the minute she gets home from work until 11:00pm for bedtime.  Then the whole household passes out from exhaustion!  Many, many kisses and hugs to Uncle Chip for coming at lunchtime to play with all us in the snow!  We sure love that!

Check this out - the resident dogs are teaching Ruby and me life's simple pleasures of sleeping in the big bed. FM tries to get me to stay up there after lights out, but I still prefer the comfort of the crate where I can stretch out my long body and give Ruby a good kick or two in my sleep.

I have been keeping busy playing and having a blast chewing on toys and sticks again. But FM tells me that will be short lived as I am having my second surgery on Monday March 11.  The totally awesome Dr. R, my miracle worker, is doing my surgery again.  I know I will be looking just M-A-R-V-E-L-O-U-S when finally healed from this final surgery. I can't wait! Though not looking forward to the chewing restrictions again, but a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do to look pretty (and have good health), right?

Here is me and Ruby showing off our talent in the tandem stick carry event.  Hmm, I wonder if that will be a competition at Goldzilla this year.  We would totally rock that event!

I love to go places, but for some silly reason, when FM shows us the harnesses and leashes, we are shying away from her now. Not sure what's up with that cuz once we are in the car, we love it because she go fun places.

Saturday our foster sisters and us hit the road and went to Rescue Dad Kelly's house to play with his pack of dogs. Two are newly rescued cockers from the same mill we came from.  One was very playful, and at times a bit bossy (I am not naming names but her initials are Jorja) and the other little girl Isabelle was very shy.  We kept trying to reassure Isabelle that life is going to be so awesome for her, she just has to trust these humans that rescued all of us and let them love her.  She did come out from her corner a few times and walked into the pack of us running in the snow so she was being very brave.  I totally understand where she is at because that was me 12 weeks ago. Now I am approaching strangers and seeking out hugs from people at the meet and greets. With love, patience, time and opportunities for new experiences, us former mill dogs will just astound you in how resilient we can be.

We have been busy attending Meet and Greets in various locations too.  At one two weekends ago we had a birthday party for our super playful foster friend Joy 12-418.  We were so excited to see her again this past weekend too at another event. I just love that girl.

Here is me trying to help Ruby score a Raw Hide that was under the shelving at the store.  Ok, she was not about to share that with me.  So much for sisterly love!

Well, it's getting late and FM is thinking bedtime is in order.  Here is me snuggling up with foster-cousin Macie after a hard playtime outside in the snow.

I am so looking forward to all of the new snow in today's forecast!  Hopefully FM will get some fun pictures of us that we can post.

Love to my fans!

Hello everyone!  Long time no update, huh!?  FM apologizes for the delay between updates, but we keep her so busy after work she doesn't get much time to sit down and write updates.

First things first.  I am giving a big Shout Out Thank You to Judith C. for the Valentine Icon!  It just melts my little heart!  Sending you my best smile and a sloppy kiss!

I bet you are all interested in seeing my new and improved face.  Well, here is the big reveal!  A big improvement huh?!

This is most likely stage one of the repair.  This picture is 4 weeks post-op.  Dr. R wanted to to make sure I had good blood flow to the repaired area and she could not do all of the repair at one time without risking blood flow.  But compared to my pictures when I first came into RAGOM, this is great progress!  One of the more immediate benefits FM has noticed is how other dogs now greet me.  No longer do they mistake my facial appearance for a nasty growl.  This is going to make a huge impact in my life, I just know it.  I will be able to make doggie friends so easily now.

Dr. R is evaluating the new pictures of my progress and I will know in a few days what the next steps will be.  I still have a couple of teeth that are exposed from the bottom that you can't see in the above photo.  Here are a couple of additional pictures of us at the appointment.   The first is us hanging out after our booster shot to make sure we don't have a reaction.  One side effect is sleepiness.  Hmm, I think it worked!

This next one was a test to make sure that my tongue was still fully functional.  At least that is what Ruby told me.  When she asked me to pull her finger, I didn't believe that one.

Other than the medical stuff, I have been a very busy little girl. Dr. R told us at our follow-up appointment that we could be off leash restrictions!  Oh what a relief that was. 17 days of no running, restricted to leashes and the cones on our heads.  We still can't chew on bones or play with any toys for a few more weeks (longer for me if I have a second procedure).  But FM says we are being such great troopers, even though we get into mischief.  She continually reminds herself that we are puppies and making up for a lost puppyhood in the puppymill.

On Sat Feburary 2nd, we went to a Meet and Greet in Burnsville.  Boy were there a lot of puppers and people there!  I got to meet so many new people and share my story.  By the end I was getting a little tired and sought out Kelly B. for some comfort laptime.  I sure love him and he loves me too.  I was a little scared walking out the door and kept looking back to see if Ruby was coming too.  Well, she was, but she went home with Karen so she could play with Snickers the cat.  When I got to our car, FM opened the back and before she knew it, like lightning, I jumped into the crate all by myself.  That was the first time I had ever done that! FM was so impressed.

Ruby and I still get into our share of mischief.  If you read Ruby's post, you will find out about the "Chili Incident". Yeah, I still counter-surf too.  FM is working to stop that behavior.

The last week also had another milestone for me.  I started to Sit on command!  I had been holding out on that but it finally clicked.  FM was so proud of me too.  Now Ruby and I sit for all of our treats and even Sit-Stay for our meals until FM says OK.  I am also getting good at coming to FM when she calls me whether in the house or outside.  Yes, treats are usually involved, but hey, I happily come pretty quickly.  Even in the backyard without treats, I come to FM to get a head rub and kisses then back off to playing with Ruby and my foster sisters.  Our week last week was pretty routine, until the big Birthday Party on Saturday.  My foster sister and her littermates turned a big 5 years old!  Their mama Reno was rescued from a puppymill too and she ended up being fostered by Kelly B and my foster sister was born into the RAGOM family.  No wonder why I love that big guy!  Well, there were 27 dogs at the party and we had such a blast.  Ruby and I thought we had struck GOLD.  I made a lot of new friends and even approached a lot of people for some attention.  We are now trying to convince FM to have parties every week.  That probably won't happen, but she agreed to finding new puppers to play with every week.

Here is Ruby and I power-napping after the party.  We love sleeping and touching each other for comfort. After an hour or so, I got up and went to FM and curled up next to her. Oh did she LOVE THAT!

Well, that's all the news for now.  I hope you are all enjoying the new snow.  FM makes snowballs for me and I take them and run around the yard. Then I eat them. Nummy!

Love to all my fans,Jewel

======================

FM here again.  Jewel is making fantastic progress in fostercare.  With every new adventure, she is gaining confidence.   She is seeking out more human attention from people she knows and is beginning to approach strangers when others show her it is ok to do so.  Potty training is going well and accidents are less frequent.  I think just like her finally deciding to sit, she will get the potty training too.  She is still accident free overnight, it is just when running around that she needs to be out frequently, as does Ruby.

She is up-to-date on vaccinations.  We will know later this week on the potential second surgery, but is open to meeting potential forever families.  She still has the requirements of needing a physical fence, another confident dog over 30 pounds as she has a rough playstyle, and no kids under 10.  She will need a family that is super committed to taking her to obedience training to strengthen her bond to humans and to continue to gain confidence in her world. Contact your placement adviser if you are interested in meeting this sweet girl!

Hi Everyone.  Extreme Makeover Rescue Edition recipient Jewel here!  Just wanted to give a quick update on how my surgery went Monday morning.  Can I just say FANTASTIC!. I can't believe how lucky and truly blessed I was to have the outstanding surgeon Dr. R perform my plastic surgery.  She is my HERO and I am sure a hero to hundreds of other rescue dogs in need too! One very close to my heart is my sister Ruby 12-416.

This is me (left) and Ruby at our pre-surgical appointment.  We saw our car in the parking lot and were thinking about making a run for it!

Check out my before and after pictures!  I am so happy because my mouth will be healthier and all the new dogs I will meet in life will not misinterpret my injury as a snarl.  I have such a sweet playful disposition, it would have been a bummer to be misunderstood on first meetings!

While Dr, R. had me under the la-la gas, she also had to extract two teeth. One molar and one premolar on the damaged left side.  They were very abnormal and FM noticed I was more hesitant to bite down on crunchy treats on that side.  She also fixed me so I won't have puppies and lose my girlish figure.  So a pretty big day for me all around.

I was pretty loopy when FM picked me up Monday afternoon.  I just kinda stared into space a lot.  FM tried to get me to eat something, but that was not going to happen.  She did give me my happy pills to control pain. I pretty much slept for the evening. Once in a while I would sit up because I could not get comfortable. I slept all night next to Ruby and by Tuesday morning, I was feeling much better.  I even got my appetite back and started to counter surf for more food since we only got a small breakfast.

So now we have to wear these Comfy Cones to keep us from rubbing our sutures.  I am getting used to it now. It actually is pretty comfy.  Here is a pic of Ruby and I eating lunch the day after surgery.  We could not see what we were eating as it was dark but it tasted like Chicken!

And here is me muggin for the camera.

We will have our sutures removed in 14 days and then Dr. R. will evaluate my progress.  She will determine if I will need another surgery on my nose to release additional scar tissue on top to help my lip correction relax. There is a bit of a ridge their right now.

The only bummer about the surgery are the RESTRICTIONS!  We have to be on leash restrictions in the yard for the next SIX weeks and NO chewing of anything fun, like toys, bones, sticks.  FM will sure have her hands full with the two of us PUPPIES that NEED to chew but CAN'T! Yikes!  And NO WRESTLING either! OMG - can you say STIR CRAZY?

Well, that's all I have for now.  Stayed tuned for the Stir Crazy Report over the next few weeks!

Special hugs and kisses to Dr. R.  You're Top Dog in my book!

And a super special thank you to Josh B for the holiday icon and to the Pig Barn Crew of Taylor, Aspen, Peyton, Hayden, Caiden, Cameron, Peggy (FKA Dane) & Jayden for sponsoring us! and helping to pay for our surgeries! They came out of a bad situation 4 years ago this week and are now thriving in their new homes.

Love,

Jewel

One of Jewel's rescue moms here - we had the great pleasure of hosting Princess Jewel for a sleepover last weekend!!  The little sweetheart had such a BUSY day! First she made her premier appearance at the Highland Park event, and did an awesome job!  She was then loaded into my car (where she didn't make a peep), and we were on our way to Happy Happy Apple Valley! First thing we did was bring her to the house of another one of her rescue moms so that she could be cat tested with the best cat tester around - Snickers! I'm pleased to say she showed no interest in the cat whatsoever, but also wasn't afraid of him. Her eyes followed him around the room, but that was about it.  She then had a chance to romp around the backyard with Miss Emilie, just as her sister Ruby did, then we headed for home and a much needed nap and snuggle with Belle and Bear!

After snuggling with the other dogs, we humans decided that we needed a chance with Jewel as well:

Jewel did an absolutely fabulous job at our house. She did very well without her sister, but definitely enjoyed the company of our 3 dogs.  We had no accidents in the house whatsoever, but were very diligent about putting her outside every couple of hours - and again, she followed the example of the other dogs.  She went into her crate quite easily at bedtime, and slept like the sweet little princess she is all night long, also with no accidents - such a smart girl!

Now I don't want you to think she spent all her time napping!  Nope, don't be deceived, as our little girl is like any other 5 1/2 month old puppy, which means she can definitely keep you hopping!  Besides hanging out with the other dogs, she kept busy with all sorts of toys (all of the sturdy, non-destructible variety!), and she also loved playtime and lots of exercise in the soft snow outside!  Running up and down the stairs until she collapsed was also a really FUN game!

As you can probably tell, I love this little girl with my whole heart, and know that she will make a wonderful addition to some lucky family. Like all of her followers, I'm anxiously awaiting to hear the results of her upcoming surgery. Lots of love and warm wishes heading your way, Jewel and Ruby!

Hi everyone and Happy New Year!

Jewel here to tell you what has been going on with me over the last week.  It has been quite exciting that's for sure!

To start off with, I made my debut at a RAGOM Event last Saturday!  I met a lot of people and some kids too. I was pretty mellow at the event as I still have lots of work to do in trusting people, but this event really showed me that there are so many nice people out there!  For those that met me and think I am such a laid back puppy, FM wants to assure you that that is just not the case.  At home, we are constantly on the go and we wrestle rough and tough and never stop stealing toys from each other.  FM has to settle us down from time to time as I sometimes get too rough with Ruby.  However, when I am picked up by people, I am mellow like jell-o.

A big Thank You to Kelly B. for letting me hang out on his lap or between his feet during the event.  I sure feel safe with him.  I was pretty exhausted by the end of the event and found a spot to catch a couple of winks.

Check out some of the pictures of me at the event.

This is me meeting my first infant.  That's Kelly holding me and the lady is someone that adopted one of FM's fosters and they came over to meet Ruby and me.

Ruby and I also scored some cool stuff from some very special people.  Joan D. bought each of us a stuffed Lamb Chop squeeky toy and Jen E. gave us each a doggie bed of our own. Our foster sisters and foster cousins are pretty fond of the Lamb Chop toys and tend to carry them around too.  That's ok, we are learning to share in this house.  Amy L. also bought us Christmas Tug Ropes that we love to chew on.  Geez, people sure are nice to us. With all of the cools toys, we are quickly learning how to be house dogs!  This is the BEST!

After the event, I got to have an sleepover party with Kris N. and her pack of dogs!  Ruby got to go 2 weekends ago to another house and last weekend was my turn.  I did really well and was a brave girl without Ruby.

This past week, I got much better approaching FM to get some attention.  I am starting to enjoy the massages and kisses I get.  I also revealed that I am a fetcher!  I like to chase after the tennis ball and have even brought it back a few times too.  I will work on that skill the rest of this week.

Thanks to all of the generous people like you sponsoring us, purchasing holiday icons, donating to the Golden Smile Project and stopping by the event last weekend, we will get the first surgery we need to fix our mouths on Monday January 14.  (I do tend to drop some kibble when I am eating and frequent the water dish to get my mouth wet.) The wonderful Dr. R. is going to fix us right up. We are going to be spayed at the same time.  We will be sure to get a short update posted after our surgeries so you all know how things went and to let you know what the next steps in our recovery process will be. FM says live it up now because leash restrictions are coming and no wrestling or running allowed while we recover!

Hugs and kisses to all my fans!

Jewel

 ===============

FM here. Just a few quick notes to let you know a little more on her requirements.

Jewel will need another very confident dog that can give her the appropriate corrections and be tolerant of her exuberant play style.  She could overwhelm a submissive dog.  She loves to play chase and has plenty of energy to expend. She is learning quickly on the corrections she is receiving from the other resident dogs, but does tend to push it a bit.

Because she is a puppy mill dog, no kids under 10.  She does spook and will seek out a hiding place if there are a lot of sudden movements close to her or if reached for quickly.

A fully enclosed fence is required for her safety.  It may take some time for her to develop good recall, but with proper positive training, we think she will overcome her trust issues.

Hi Everyone!

It is New Year's Eve!  My first party is just around the corner! I am so excited.  I have been practicing staying up late in preparation for this night.

Before I forget, I have so many people to thank tonight for their financial generousity to help me and my sister Ruby 12-416 get the needed surgery for our injured lips. I now have a wonderful Sponsor named Kathy M!  I am sending you many puppy kisses!  Also a huge thank you to Sharron, Abby, Buddy, Meryl and Dustin, Jamie R, Zoey's parents, Judith C and Tegan and Scout for the wonderful holiday icons.  And also to all of the wonderful people who have been making donations on the Golden Smile Project on http://ragom.org/shop/donat/golden-smile.html  I wish I could give all of you kisses to repay you!

I have been making great progress this week in trusting people.  Tonight, while watching the Vikings Game, when Adrian Peterson made is final run to come within 9 yards of the all-time season rushing record, I made my new record by climbing on foster mom and giving her a kiss!  She was SO Happy!  I am now comfortable walking all over her when she is sitting on the couch.  She has been spending time with me laying on the floor or bed the last few days and engaging me in play with my foster sisters.  I am better this way when people are on my level.  If someone is walking towards me and reaching for me without a treat in hand, I still look for a safe place to go as I do not like to be cornered when people are so much taller than I am.  If people are just walking around and not coming right at me, I am fine too.  And when outside, I am starting to run past FM.  I even climbed onto the big bed today to see what my foster sisters were doing.  FM says I had a big smile on my face and my tail was wagging.  Before that, I have not been comfortable on the bed when FM brings me up there.  Now I understand it is allowed here, and actually fun when there are toys up there too.

Sister Ruby has been having an overnight at Karen H.'s house. It was supposed to be one night and turned into two because she was having so much fun there with Snickers the cat and the other 3 dogs there.  FM wanted to see how we would do separated since we had been together everyday since day one.  Well, we both did fantastic!  I get my chance for an overnight and cat testing next weekend.

My favorite place to nap in on the treadmill.  Check out this picture of me snoozing after playtime.

I did wake up and realize this was not the most comfortable position, so did have to get up and stretch out on the deck.

Ruby and I sure enjoy chewing on sticks in the backyard.  We usually make our own by chewing them off the shrubs in the backyard. I guess FM might be replacing a few shrubs this spring.  So sorry FM! That's me in front.

Ruby and I will be at Petco this weekend January 5th. We sure hope we can meet our fans!  I will be the shy one, but say hi to me anyways!

Love,

Jewel

 ===================

FM here.  Jewel is an absolute sweetheart.  She does have some hurdles to overcome in trusting people but is making great progress in the couple of weeks she has been here.  She and her sister Ruby 12-416 will be going to separate forever homes. We feel this will be the best for both of them so they can develop their own identities. Since both did not have the proper human socialization in their early lives, they are a bit shy of humans and totally comfortable with other dogs.

 Jewel will need:

--Another confident dog to learn how to trust people and learn the proper behaviors for living life indoors.  She likes to play rough so a medium (30 lbs+) or larger dog would be best.

--A physical fence to keep her safe as she develops recall. She is more wary of people.

--A patient family to teach her to trust people. It may be some time before she blossoms into a happy golden around people, but we see so much good potential in her because of the great progress she has made in the two weeks since coming into RAGOM.

--A crate for potty training and a place to feel safe.  She is doing really great in this area and is learning to ring the sleigh bells on the door. She loves going outside to run around when she gets the zoomies and wants to play chase.

Jewel has not been cat tested yet, but will be this weekend.  She is a typical puppy in the chewing department so does need to be monitored full time if not crated. Miss Jewel has done some counter surfing when under the influence of her sister Ruby.  When Ruby is not around, Jewel has not surfed.

At this time, we are not sure if she will require more than one surgery on her lip. We will know better after her surgery in mid-January on when she will be available to go to her new home.

Thank you to everyone that is following Jewel & Ruby's story and for the kind thoughts, prayers and financial support for their surgeries.  They are all very much appreciated.
