Merry Christmas to the Golden Seniors! From Anonymous

I’d like to introduce you to Harley, Harley is a 12 yr. old Purebred Golden Retriever however, he does remind me of a Shetland Pony. Harley came to live with us a week ago because his family was divorcing and were unable to have him in their new homes. We welcomed Harley into our home and with him he brought a big bag full of soft toys, he is so gentle with his soft toys again, Annie thinks they need to lose all of their stuffing so she has decided to make some alterations to his toys.

Harley met our two golden girls without incident. He told me he’s crushing on Annie… Molly is a bit jealous about that but oh well… at least he’s not a two timer…

Harley is a great gentle guy, he is potty trained, loves to shake hands and cook… Yes, cook… He will lay on the floor right under the cutting board just in case something accidentally drops onto the floor… it’s a great spot for him, last night he was able to clean up a slice of pork loin that flew off the serving plate, it was just a miracle he just happened to be there to help out.

Harley has no resource guarding or undesirable traits. He was a bit nervous for the first 3 days living with us but had spent the first 12 yrs. Of his life with the same people before coming to live with us. Harley loves to ride in the car and absolutely loves our 17 yr. old son. The minute our son steps foot in the house Harley is right there to greet him and be his pal.

If Harley sounds like the ideal pet and addition to your family please contact placement.

Harley is the long lighter colored golden… he’s snoozing with his girlfriend Annie…

We helped send our dear old friend Harley (12-384) off to the Rainbow Bridge this morning. His poor old body just was worn out and started to shut-down. He had a good long run (14+ dog years and a little over 100 in people years). His last three years in RAGOM were the best of his life we’re sure. He was a happy, affectionate boy.

Harley made friends (human, canine, and feline) wherever he went. He never met a human or animal that he didn’t like. It won’t take him long at the Bridge to join in the party. He’ll be especially happy to see his old foster buddies Red and Goober and his resident companion Sandy who will have her paws full trying to keep those three boys from getting into trouble!

Harley was the most wonderful addition to our family. He was our introduction to RAGOM and his gentle acceptance of all dogs enabled us to foster a number of RAGOM dogs. There won’t be another one like Harley for us – he is missed more than we can say.

Wednesday (Jan 20) is gotcha day at our house.  Harley prefers that we call it Harley Day (named in honor of his favorite word).  Three years ago we were lucky enough to be able to adopt this wonderful guy who was then 11 years old.  We're so lucky that he is still going strong at age 14.  Although he sleeps a lot more of the time now he still just loves his life here.  He's a big old goof-ball but he is so calm and accepting of all of the foster dogs that have come into our family.  We've had 12 since Harley came into our lives and he has helped with every one - especially the retired breeder girls.

Thank you Kelly S. for allowing us to adopt this wonderful guy!

On January 20, 2015 it will have been two years since Harley joined our family. We know that a lot of folks call this day “Gotcha Day” but we made an exception for Harley. Since his favorite word is “Harley” – his face brightens up every time he hears it – January 20th is always “Harley Day” at our house.

Harley celebrated his 13th birthday in November and he is still going strong.  Oh, he’s showing his age a bit more now. Never a morning-dog he’s becoming even more of a let’s-take-a-nap or go-to-bed-early guy and he spends much of his time sleeping. However, when he’s up he is always moving ahead full bore. He had some surgery in November for laryngeal paralysis. He’s now fully recovered and can now breathe better so that he’s resumed his hell bent for leather sprints down our driveway at the end of his walks.

Harley has remained a working dog – helping foster even more dogs this year. He is so easy going and accepting that he helps the foster dogs to relax and blend into our family very quickly. He’s always is willing to share his toys, his beds, and his attention with any dog that wants become part of his family. This year we became foster failures for the first time with Sandy (14-070). As a retired breeder girl she has a number of fears and a few quirks. Harley is a great brother for her and gives her a role model to follow.

Perhaps Harley’s favorite foster buddy this year was Oliver/Red (14-202). Both of these boys always have a twinkle in their eye. We (and Harley) miss him a lot but we know that he is living the golden life with another RAGOM foster family now.

Currently he and Sandy have teamed up to foster Amber (14-345). Their task has been to help her to lose weight and they are doing a great job!

We couldn’t have asked for a better dog. When we adopted him, at age 11, we didn’t know how long he would be with us but two years later he’s still going strong. We’re so grateful to RAGOM and to his foster mom Kelly S for letting up adopt this big guy.

Hi everyone, it’s Harley.  Mom and Dad told me that today (and every January 20th ever after) is Harley Day at our house.  It’s the anniversary of the day I joined the family in 2013.  How great is that!?!

It’s been an amazing year.  I had thought that I was going to be able to settle in for long naps every day broken only by a short walk or feeding time.  Instead I soon found out that I was going to be a working dog.  Mom and Dad did Foster Training last April.  When they got back they told me that my new title was “Resident Dog” which meant that I was in charge of dog to dog training for new RAGOM dogs that needed to learn how to live the golden life.

My first project was Rainy.  She was here to recover from some serious jaw surgery.  She didn’t need to learn much but she needed time and space to relax and let her jaw heal.  I especially liked helping her clean up the floor of spills from her liquid treats (vanilla yogurt) that she had while she wasn’t allowed to chew solid food.  She found a great forever home just 15 miles away from us.  Here’s a picture of both of us along with Mom (Rainy is on the right).

After just a few days of R & R it was back to work again.  This time I really had my work cut out for me.  Dakota was a 9 year old Breeder Girl who knew NOTHING about how to be a dog!  Houses, cars, cats, leashes, and walks were all new to her.  I even had to show her how to go through doors and up and down stairs.  I almost died going up and down the stairs time after time to show her what to do and that it wasn’t scary.  Well, anyhow, after a lot of work on my part Mom and Dad took her to the Cities to a great family.  We hear from them that she’s doing great and applying a lot of the lessons that I taught her.  Here’s a picture of me (on the left) looking at Dakota on her first day here after Dad had given her a bath.  You can tell that I looked pretty worried about how big a job this was going to be.

Well they say there’s no rest for the wicked.  After a brief “vacation” at my friend Ginny’s while Mom and Dad took a little time off, I now have my current project.  Oooof, he’s a LOT of work.  His name is Oscar the Golden Doodle.  He’s just 2 years old and is a typical teenager – he thinks he knows it all and doesn’t want me to show him anything.  One of his front legs doesn’t work so he’s always sort of hopping around (at about 60 mph).  We been working on “sit and stay”.  I think he wants to do it so bad but his poor butt bounces up and down because he gets so excited and the “stays” are pretty brief.  I think I’ll tell Mom and Dad that I think I’m better at working with Senior dogs as he’s just a little too hyper for me.  I have to admit though that he has his good side.  I like it when he snuggles up next to me on our dog bed for a mid-morning nap.

One of the really fun things I got to do this year (this was my favorite job) was to be a Senior Ambassador at a couple Meet and Greets.  I got to wear the official money vest and go around and greet customers who were coming into the Pet Store.  That was really fun!  I got more pets and treats in two hours than I usually get in weeks.  I’m definitely going to ask Mom and Dad if we can do more of those this year!

Well, I’d better go now, before I wear out my welcome on the computer.  Here’s my favorite vanity shot of the year.  Don’t you think I look pretty good for a guy who just turned 12 in November?

Thanks again for reading about me.  I’m sending a special thanks to Kelly S for fostering me and starting me on the road to the Golden Life.

It’s been three months since we drove home from Grand Forks, ND in a snow storm with our forever dog Harley and we wanted to give you an update. As I write this Harley is lying in the kitchen right in front of the refrigerator while Mom is doing some food preparation. The fridge is a favorite place for Harley as his carrots are kept inside and his chicken treats are kept on top.

Harley has been a joy to have around. He hasn’t met a person or animal he doesn’t like. He’s charmed his way into the hearts of our four grandkids, neighbors, vet, and everyone else he’s encountered.

Most importantly he’s even managed to get on the good side of the two resident senior cats who actually run our house. He’s always ready to go for a walk, shovel snow, take a ride (his favorite), and just hang out with us whatever we’re doing. He is especially good at naps (morning, mid-day, early afternoon, late afternoon, and evening naps in front of the TV).

Thank you Foster Mom Kelly S and RAGOM for allowing us to adopt this wonderful dog.

Harley was adopted today and traveled to Spicer, MN where he will be putting around the lake enjoying the outdoors and fishing. Now doesn't that sound like the perfect life. He will also be a big brother to a couple of felines.. lucky guy.....

Congratulations to Mark C. and Rosemary B on your adoption of Harley.

Just a quick update on Harley,

He is a wonderful guy, we found out he loves presents... he managed to help everyone open up presents on Christmas Eve, we finally gave him an empty box with wrapping paper in it and he was so happy, he carried that box around with him till bed time. On Christmas day we had a ton of people in our home, Harley was very nervous, when he's nervous he will jump up on people.. so we do know his routine, but the things that just surprised me was he wanted to hang out by the kitchen counter where the fresh veggie tray was, he was in heaven having raw carrots and a little bit of mushroom.. Yes, who would think a golden would love mushrooms... the girls just wrinkled up their noses when he was eating the mushrooms... He was very persistent about being by the counter so I finally cut up an apple for him and the girls and that seemed to satisfy him for awhile or should I say until presents were being opened again...

He helped Grammy open up all of her presents, she didn't even know who half of the gifts were from as Harley was totally into the opening part oh, and then he wanted the boxes to carry around the house. By the time the last person exited our home we were all pretty tired of Miss Molly, she believes she is the only golden in the house who can be touched.. so the minute anyone would touch or talk to Harley or Annie, Molly would give them the business...
Harley will be having two teeth extracted on Friday then off for a spa day on Monday, you aren't even going to be able to recognize this good looking guy on Tuesday!
All and All, Harley was a great guy to have for the holidays, I've enclosed a picture of how he spent his evening... he was just bushed!!!
