Please welcome Archie 12-371 to RAGOM! This three year old, pure bred golden boy is a wait list guy. He is sure one to have been waiting for! Here’s what potential adopters need to know about Archie:

First and foremost, Mister Archie has allergies, so his new home must be committed to feeding, bathing and vetting to keep his allergies at bay. He was surrendered to RAGOM because his previous family could not afford to care for his allergies. When Archie arrived at our home a week ago, the first thing we noticed was he has no undercoat or feathering, his top coat and skin were oily and he had multiple scabs all over his body. At the vet, we learned he also had an ear infection. His treatment thus far is as follows:

  • Daily ear drops and twice weekly cleaning
  • Two weeks of twice daily antibiotic
  • Prednisone with a taper- now on once daily for the next 4 days going to every other day after that until his pills are gone.
  • Medicated baths- he had his first one last Monday and will have his second one on the 19th
  • Recheck with the vet on the 29th for a determination of maintenance medication
  • Switched to an A+ rated food

With all the vet care (thanks Dr. Stephanie), Archie could sure use a SPONSOR!! Archie is now mostly scab free- the undercoat will take some time to fill in as will his “bald spots”; he no longer scratches and enjoys his new diet. Other attributes of this handsome guy are:

  • He’s neutered & 93 pounds
  • Current on all shots including heartworm and flea/tick prevention
  • House trained and crate trained- He has free roam of our home now
  • Walks very nicely with his gentle leader- pulls too much on a flat collar (93#!!)
  • Is kind and respectful to our resident dog- likes to play but knows when to stop
  • No anxiety or resource guarding issues-was a very well loved dog at his past home
  • Has been trained to invisible fence at his previous home and enjoys our fenced yard

There is so much more to say about Archie- like he loves to “spoon” at night in bed, but he also sleeps on the floor. His temperament is perfect- mellow- doesn’t jump and rarely barks unless there is a squirrel in the tree or someone at the door. I’m trying to put it all in one update because I think this beautiful boy will find his forever home quickly. I bet your contacting your placement advisor right now!!

Our beloved Archie (12-371) passed away on October 12, 2020, two days after his 11th birthday. We adopted Archie from RAGOM on 12/1/2012 at the age of three years. Archie was a very special, loving boy and we miss his personality and all his little quirks. We were blessed to be able to provide a loving home for Archie for 8 years. We miss our big buddy.

December 1, 2012 is a GReat day for Archie 12-371. It is a warm, sunny winter day. Christmas music is playing and trees are being trimmed. It is the day Archie met Dan and Ruth and Gracie 12-081. It is the day he found his new forever family! He is so lucky to be going to this family. They adopted their sweet Gracie from RAGOM 6 months ago and knew she needed a brother…a pup for play and companionship. Dan and Ruth have been a two golden family before and were waiting for the right gent to join them. And then there was Archie… We know that Archie will bring your home much love, affection and happiness as he did in ours. Thank you for driving to Sioux Falls to meet him and bring him into your lives. What a lucky boy he is…

Two weeks ago, Archie arrived in Sioux Falls (forgot to thank Mari for her part in transporting him down!). He was itchy and covered in scabs from his staph infection caused by allergies. Today, he is one happy boy! His allergies are so much better. He is done with his ear drops and antibiotics. He has had two medicated baths and his skin is now scab free! He has switched to a high protein low grain diet and is sporting a shinny top coat. It will be a while before his undercoat comes back. Soon he will be off his prednisone and he has a follow up on the 29th to assess for long term allergy needs. Medically he is well on his way.

Archie celebrated Thanksgiving with 10 people and did well. Of course he was hanging around in the kitchen in hopes the cook would drop something, but was so good mannered when it came time to eat. He and our resident dog found a comfy spot in the living room while dinner was served. He was a gracious host to his company, ensuring that everyone got a chance to pet and scratch him.

Things we have learned about Mr. Archie in these two weeks are:

  • His temperament and personality are very calm
  • He doesn’t counter surf or get into garbage cans
  • He crates well, but now has the run of the place
  • He goes back and forth sleeping on the bed one night to the floor another night.
  • He doesn’t lie down on dog pillows.
  • He enjoys Nyla bones
  • Can easily walk two dogs as long as he is wearing his gentle leader

Archie would do well in just about any setting. Even though he is 93 pounds, he would be fine with kids. He rarely jumps and has no resource guarding. He used to live with cats. He has been trained to an invisible fence. He hasn’t tried to bolt out a door and does well with our chain link fence. He loves to go for rides and is a great rider.

Check out his new pictures and see how much better he is looking! There are few action shots- he really is content just lying around! Don’t you have just the spot in your home for him to lie around?
