Emit has been at my house since mid-day Saturday. He is almost four-years-old (birthday December 21). He is a yellow-lab, perhaps a golden mix, but most likely a purebred lab. He has the typical lab temperament, a boisterous, I love everyone type guy.

He met the canine crew at my house with zero issues, first he met my calm guy, then he met my wilder guy, then he met the golden year-old-pup I was babysitting...he did great with all three dogs.

He was surrendered to Ragom because he is now totally blind, and his surrendering home didn't quite know how to keep him safe. We have a fenced yard, and the ability to keep the dog on one level (provided doors to other levels are closed). It has been quite interesting watching him figure things out. He also is crated at night and when nobody is home so he doesn't get himself into any situations that could scare him.

Apparently at some point Emit met a critter that didn't like him much. That animal attacked his head and one eye was lost in that attack. He has some scaring on his face and head that is covered by fur, but you can still see the marks....and his eye socket is empty. The other eye seems to have a large cataract. It is obvious he has no sight in that eye either.

I think whatever happened to his eye is the reason he and my cat aren't getting along. She is 15+ years old and has been the official feline greeter since she can remember. Since she weighs 10 pounds and all the dogs I foster outweigh her by 60 or 70 pounds, she has learned to teach them from the get-go that she's the boss. She growls and hisses at them, and smacks at them and in 99% of the cases, they will never go near her again. With Emit, apparently her growling and hissing reminds him of whatever horrible thing attacked his face and he barks and growls right back at her....Right now we are at a stand-off. She's in the basement (which is her domain anyways) when he's out and about, and when he's crated, she can come upstairs. Hopefully they work things out soon because it's not really fair to either of them.

We have a vet appointment later today, so I'll report more after we know more.

One last shot of Emit and my guys....lounging.

Emit is quite at home in his foster home. He sleeps at night in the living room on a leather couch (his choice), but he likes to spend his evenings near at least one of my dogs. In this picture, he's on a bed with Finnegan. He is crated during the work day simply because he hasn't quite accepted the cat...and it is, after all, her house. She has been slinking around her house since early November. If you're looking for a very normal (although blind) Yellow Lab, email your placement advisor. Princess, the cat, will love you forever!

We were watching a show on Animal Planet on Saturday night. Emit heard the dogs barking on the show and he put himself in front of the TV and his head cocked from side to side...it was very funny. It was like he was watching it...but he was actually responding to the dogs on the TV. He finally put his head down and rested, but he stayed in the same spot until the channel got changed at the end of the show. Other than that, not much is new in Emit's world. Another foster will be bringing him to the Ragom Petco event on February 2. I think she's planning on being there at the beginning and staying until Emit reaches his limit. If you'd like to meet him, either contact your placement advisor or go to the event.

Emit had his sutures out on Saturday morning. His face looks great! Thanks to Dr. J. at ACH for doing the surgery. He's now totally up to date with his shots and his ear infections are finally cleared up too. He is still wearing a cone for a few days so the scabbing around his eye gets a chance to clear up without being scratched off. It's certainly been a long road for poor Emit. He's now totally ready for adoption. Please email your placement advisor if you'd like to give this special guy a home.

I'm a bad foster mom....I totally forgot that Emit turned four-years-old on December 21. I hope his next year goes better for him than his last year did!

Emit had his enucleation surgery on Wednesday, December 12. He was dropped off by a wonderful Ragom volunteer, Kris N. and I picked him up Wednesday evening. Dr. J. said she removed his eye and several pellets from his eye socket. He was still stoned from the morphine and could barely walk upright. We lifted him into the back of my Subaru and when I got home I lifted him out. He staggered up the path from the garage and we got inside after he stopped to potty. My dogs stopped in their tracks when they saw him, they cautiously approached him, and pretty much stayed away from him for the rest of the evening. He collapsed onto the kitchen floor and seemed to be asleep again, so we went about our business for a while. He started trying to follow us so for his safety, I put him in a large crate in the dining room. He was quiet for the rest of the night.

This morning he went outside and pottied again. He came in, ate breakfast and had a drink. He has been blind since he arrived at my house so we're used to him crashing into things, but now we don't want him to crash into things...so he went back into his crate. I think he'll be in that crate a lot for the next few days, at least until it starts to heal. He is also wearing a large cone....which he hates but he can't scratch at his eye...so it's a necessity.

I went home at noon and he went outside, had another drink and went back into his crate. He uses the cone like the shovel on a bulldozer which my other dogs dislike. I don't care about any of that stuff, just that his sutures stay in....and so far everything looks intact.
I think at this point the best way to sum up the whole thing is "POOR Emit!"

Emit attended a Ragom event last weekend. I was doing something else so another Ragom volunteer took him. They stayed for about half of the event. He got a little overwhelmed. I can understand how that could happen, all those dogs and strangers and he can't see a thing...

At home he's doing quite well. He knows his space and manages quite well. My next door neighbor met him the other evening and he was surprised Emit was blind. He said he had seen him in my yard for the past couple of weeks and hadn't noticed any issues and even commented that he'd seen Emit and his lab run the fenceline together.

He has found the toybox and he loves to raid it on a daily basis. He spreads the toys out all around him. He doesn't guard anything, but he is a hard chewer....he's killed a couple of kongs. He hasn't chewed on anything other than dog toys or bones. He's crate trained, honors babygates, totally housebroken, listens well....pretty much the perfect dog.

I still suggest he go to a cat-free family. Things haven't really improved between Emit and my cat although I think my cat was originally the instigator.

He's as strong as a horse and our first couple of walks were a disaster. He's doing much better now that he's used to a gentle leader. He still doesn't like the gentle leader, but it makes him so much more manageable. I'm not sure he'd been walked on leash before, and combine that with the fact that he can't see, you can imagine what we looked like on our first couple of excursions. Add to that the fact that he came from the country and I live in a very urban area with noises that he didn't know about...it's working out better but I still won't attempt any walks when it's slippery out.

He's a super nice dog with a great temperament. At this stage, I'm looking for a home that is committed to owning a blind dog. I don't have any other requirements. He likes my dogs, but he does not rely on either of them. A fence would be nice, but an owner outside with him would be just as good. Someone willing to help him feel confident and stay safe and have a good life is all I am currently looking for.

We have an appointment with the eye specialist in early December, once that is over, I will start actively looking for his forever home. If you think that could be you, email your placement advisor.
