It is my pleasure to introduce Shadow 12-280 to the RAGOM family. Shadow and his "little" brother, Lucky 12-281, came into RAGOM's care on Wednesday August 1. Thanks to Barry K. for handling the full transport from South Dakota to Minnesota and then for keeping these two boys for almost 2 days! Then on Friday Aug. 3 another RAGOM volunteer (Bob O.) picked the boys up and drove them closer to where FD worked and I transported these guys back to Prior Lake.

If you have not noticed from the pictures Shadow is one big boy. We went to the vet on Saturday August 4th and got all his vaccinations updated and microchipped. Shadow had a minor double ear infection so we have been giving him medicated drops twice daily. When we put him on the scale at the vet, he weighed 133 pounds. He weighed 46 pounds more than his "little" brother, Lucky. My vet recommended a diet of one cup of dog food twice daily, some vegetables such as green beans and carrots, and an exercise regime.

Fast forward a week and Shadow has gotten the hang of things so well. I think he actually enjoys the "Biggest Loser Doggie Bootcamp" that he is living. This consists of a reduced diet mentioned above coupled with at least one walk a day if not two. We do make enough stops along the way so that he can sniff and mark his favorite trees, street signs, and lamp poles. He has met a number of neighbor dogs, humans and children and he has lots of new "friends". Plus we find enough time each day to give him hugs and kisses. Shadow likes to kiss back too.

Thursday night he went with FD to Chuck and Don's to get some more good diet dog food. He got lots of hugs and tummy rubs from some kids while waiting to check out. He nearly sampled some doggie treats too but FD reined him in just in time. While we were there we had him step on their scale and he weighed in at 124 pounds. At least we know that with the controlled diet and exercise plan we are shedding the excess weight.

Shadow has had free reign from the start and he has not touched anything inappropriate nor had any accidents in the house. It's like he has been here forever with FD's pack. My Indy has tried to get him to play with her playbow antics but so far Shadow just ignores her. If I sneak back in the house he quickly runs to the patio door looking for me. He cried for me a few times when I had closed the door, so I would say Shadow really bonds with his people and wants to be close by.

Shadow and Lucky were born in May 2007 so they are just over 5 years old. They are purebred Golden Retrievers. Shadow has a very dark red coat with the coolest highlights on his back and shoulders. He also has a dark spot on his tongue. He told me to tell you that these are the traits that make him a distinguished handsome boy. You'll just have to meet him in person and find out for yourself.

Shadow's forever home will need:

  • Someone committed to giving him regular daily exercise and feeding him a good dog food. I don't think it would be wise to place him with a family that will not provide walks or runs.
  • He lived with 12 year old twins so I would say he is okay with kids 10 and older. Due to his size I would not recommend someone with toddler or pre-school aged children.
  • A fenced in yard would be ideal. He has noticed rabbits and squirrels on our walks and given the chance I think he would take off in hot pursuit.
  • Another dog would also be ideal. He has always lived with another dog. I am not sure how he would react to being without a canine pal.

Shadow has big news to share with his many fans. Shadow was adopted on Oct. 9 by the S. family. He now has a Mom and Dad and their two sons and two dogs and a cat in his forever family.

Before Shadow left to join his new family Foster Dad (FD) brought him to two different pet stores. The first one Shadow stepped on the scale and it read just under 111 pounds. FD thought maybe the scale was a bit off. So we ventured to a second pet store. The scale there read pretty much the same thing just under 111 pounds. That's right, Mr. Shadow lost over 22 pounds in 9 weeks. All those walks, the reduced fat dog food, and the swimming trips to the cabin really paid off. And watching Shadow it was easy to see how much better he felt in the new slimmer version.

The S. family has a second year round home up on the north shore. They are excited to show Shadow their beach there. This past weekend their oldest son came home from college to meet Shadow. The last message Shadow's new family sent me had the following message:

"He is such a wonderful addition to our family and gives us so much joy. Nicki is her self again after losing Boss she has really had a hard time, she has been so sad and just would lay with her head down all the time. Now she and Shadow run and play together and she is her happy self again. They really get a long well. He has given us so much already (I think it was supposed to be the other way around). He is a loved and happy boy here and he says thank you too".

Congratulations to the S. family for choosing to adopt from RAGOM! We look forward to pictures and future Happy Endings posts!

XOXO

Shadow wants his many fans to know he has been so busy enjoying fall the past two weekends! He sure did enjoy all of the attention he got from the many people that attended Goldzilla on Sept. 22. I think he was so exhausted from Goldzilla that he barely had time the next day to watch any football.

This past weekend Shadow and his pals, Indy and Lauren, and Foster Dad went up to the cabin for the end of the season. Who would have thought it would be almost 80 degrees the end of September? Shadow enjoyed a number of swims in the lake including the one that he took just after the new pictures were taken. His pals joined in too so it was a trio of wet dogs on the car ride home. They all slept while Foster Dad drove home.

Two of our neighbors at the cabin decided to do a little squirrel hunting while we were there. I can say that Shadow is not a big fan of gunfire. Both Shadow and Lauren came to me for safety. So we quickly let them go inside the cabin. Good thing it was just a couple of quick shots.

We are still trying to get our morning and evening walks in each day. We just get the evening walk in before the sun sets. My brother and sister-in-law thought Shadow looked slimmer since the last time they had seen him two weeks earlier. We have not gone to the pet store and weighed in the last month.

Shadow has a family coming to meet him this Thursday night. If things are a match he could soon be in his forever home. Keep your paws crossed for Shadow! We'll report back soon.

Mr. Shadow has been on a road tour of MN the past 2 weekends. He is quite a good traveler in the car with FD and the resident dogs. Both of the weekend trips ended up at the cabin in northern MN. Last weekend we were in southern MN for a day and then departed for the cabin in northern MN. This was a 6 hour car ride and Shadow and his pals did just fine. I kept telling them we were headed to the cabin. Once we had the car unpacked Shadow was the first dog to go for a swim in the lake. I am hoping that Shadow will teach Indy and Lauren that swimming is more fun than just wading or laying in the shallow water.

Shadow also got to go on a shopping spree to Chuck And Don's Pet Store this week. While we were there we had him step on their scale and he now weighs 121 pounds. That's right he has shed 12 pounds in the 4 weeks that he has been in foster care. As a reward for the continued weight loss Shadow picked out a couple of new toys. The weight loss has made a huge difference in his activity level. He has started to engage in the wrestle mania fests with Indy and Lauren. And of course he is always excited to go on our daily walks.

Quite a number of people that have met Shadow the past 2 weekends have commented about how goodlooking this boy is. Shadow seems to enjoy those comments and then leans in for some ear rubs and tummy scratches. When the person stops he will put his big paw up for more or even give one of his nose nudges.

Shadow says check out the pictures of him swimming in the lake or hanging out with his pals, Indy and Lauren. Please contact your placement advisor if you would like to meet Shadow!
