Prince 12-249

Meet Prince (AKA Chance).  This big headed love muffin is an 11 year old Golden Retriever/Lab mix.  We call him "Chance" because he is getting a second chance at having a golden life!  Chance was seized from a home and brought to a shelter in Hibbing by animal control, so not a lot is known about the environment this sweet guy was living in.

We have been getting to know Chance for the last several days.  He is pure joy!  Here is what we have learned about Chance so far:

  1. He LOVES attention and affection.  Even eye contact with this sweetie will get his tail thumping.
  2. He was pretty frightened of stairs.  I don't think he was familiar with using them.  However, after a few days he seems to be conquering his fear with no problems.
  3. He totally ignores cats
  4. He did a great job meeting my 9-year old niece.  I think he would love kids that pay attention to him.
  5. Gets along well with our resident dog.
  6. Chance has a limp.  After a visit to the vet, we learned that he has severe right elbow dysplasia.  He has been on a medication for a couple of days, and it has made a huge difference.  He is much more playful!  Chance will need to be on daily medication for this.  We have also started him on Glucomsamine and fish oil supplements.  The vet says Chance will always have right front limp, however, a daily med and a couple of supplements will help keep his joints comfortable!
  7. Chance is also lyme positive, which will be easily treatable with the 30 day presciprion of antibiotics he has started.
  8. Chance is a velcro dog.  He likes to be where you are.  He seems starved for human attention, and so appreciative for every snuggle and kiss he gets (and he is getting lots!)
  9. Because of Chance's elbow dysplasia, he does seem to have short bursts of activity, then he likes to lay down and chill for a bit.  He is so easy to please!
  10. Chance could stand to lose 5-8 pounds, which of course will help his joints, so we have started to work on that.  This guy LOVES food.  :)
  11. Chance did not react to fireworks that were going off in the neighborhood over the weekend, which is a good sign!
  12. Chance does not know any commands, so we are working on "come", "sit", "lay down", etc.
  13. He pulls on a leash and would benefit from a gentle leader.
  14. He was really dirty and filled with tics, but after a trip to the groomer with his foster brother, he looks gorgeous!  Chance did a great job letting his foster dad and mom pull tics off of him.  He lets you do anything to him and still wags his tail.
  15. You will LOVE his enormous head.  It is so incredibly cute and squeezable!
  16. He appears to be potty trained.  No accidents in the house and we are on day 4.
  17. We did leave him home alone for a couple of hours with his foster brother with no incident.  I do think Chance would do just fine being left at home.  He seems to have no problem being mellow.
  18. He sleeps soundly through the night without a peep.

Chance (and his foster parents) would like to thank Rick, Jo, and Bruce for helping to transport him from Hibbing to the metro!

If you think Chance would make the perfect addition to your family, let your placement advisor know.  This guy is a true gem and he has a lot of love to give.

Updates

Monday, August 13, 2012

Chance (AKA Prince) continues to be as cute as ever!  He truly is a gem of a dog with a very affectionate personality.  Here are a few more updates for you on this sweet fella:

  1. An unfamiliar dog recently ran into the yard and Chance ran up to him and greeted him excitedly.   I think he really likes other dogs.  Occasionally he loves the toys other dogs have too, so there have been a couple of scuffles with our resident Golden but nothing concerning—just normal dog behavior.  Chance is easily redirected and truly enjoys the company of his foster brother.  He is great with this foster sister, the cat, too.
  2. He LOVES being near people.  He is an expert snuggler.  He will nudge with his nose, paw, etc. to get as much physical contact as possible.
  3. Chance sleeps on a dog bed next to our bed.  He sleeps soundly through the night.  When the alarms go off, he likes to hop onto the bed to start his day with snuggles and kisses from foster mom and dad.
  4. Chance is going to visit the vet this coming Monday to take some additional xrays of his front right leg.  If there is more news to report on that, I will update everyone next week.  Stay tuned!
  5. Chance did not understand playing with toys when we first got him.  Now he will chase after balls that are thrown short distances, LOVES licking peanut butter out of kongs, and chewing on rawhides and other toys.
  6. Continues to ride like an angel in the car—as a matter of fact, we have a longer car ride to the family cabin this weekend.  I cannot wait to see how he enjoys swimming!
  7. As mentioned before, Chance has storm anxiety.  He wants to be in a closed in space like under a table or in a closet—he is rather easy on the storm anxiety spectrum.

Chance is a really easy dog to fall in love with.  Besides being totally handsome, he has a fun loving spirit, likes cats, dogs, kids, and is an absolute joy to be around!  Could he be the perfect companion for your family?  Let your placement advisor know!

Watching foster dad out the window.

Monday, July 30, 2012

We have had Chance (AKA Prince 12-249) for a few weeks now, and let me tell you, this guy is truly charmer!  Here are a few more things we’ve discovered since our last update:

  1. He rides well in the car.  He likes to lie down or look out the window.
  2. He is SO HAPPY to interact with anyone—he wiggles around in absolute delight!
  3. Don’t let his age scare you.  This guy knows how to have a good time!  He seems to have a lot of life left to live and he definitely has a lot of love to give.
  4. Chance does have the right leg limp, but this guy can still play!  He will occasionally break out into a jog or a few playful jumps, but his play time is in moderation.  He knows his limitations well, and takes a break when he needs to rest.
  5. His tail wags non-stop.  It will melt your heart.
  6. He has some thunderstorm anxiety, but simply wants to go into a closet or under a table.  He is MUCH easier than my resident Golden during a storm.  J
  7. He has a high prey drive.  He likes to chase bunnies and chipmunks.  Thankfully for them, he has a limp and can only go so fast.  J
  8. He has lost a few pounds already.  He has about 7 more to go!
  9. He is not a big barker.  He will follow suit if his foster brother starts to bark, but a simple redirection quiets him.
  10. We are still working on basic commands, which he is getting better at.
  11. He does fine with free roam while we are at work.

Some things that would be great for Chance’s fur-ever family:

  1. Kids!  He seems to love kids and the attention he gets from them.  Kids are certainly not a requirement; he is a people pleaser of all ages!  He will make someone or some family a perfect side kick.
  2. Because Chance likes to be near people, I think a physical fence, invisible fence, etc. would be just fine for him.   He likes to go outside, do his business, and go back inside if you are not staying out there with him.   He is enjoying his new indoor life so much, that I think he worries he might be left outside again.
  3. An easy going family.  Because of his elbow dysplasia, he won’t be a running partner, or even be able to do long walks.  He would love to hang out with you in the yard, snuggle, make you laugh with his silly antics, and be a great addition to your family.
  4. He will need to be on an arthritis medication daily, which is about 100.00/month.

Let your placement advisor know if you are interested in this handsome, loving guy.  He could add so much joy to a household!  We LOVE him!

How cute is his smashed up lip covering his eye?
