We are coming up on a year since we adopted Ely and wanted to share what a terrific experience it's been. We picked him up from his foster family on July 8th, 2012, and he's been one of the family ever since. Initially he was a little nervous, and rightly so since he'd been with 3 different families (including ours) in a span of about 10 days. During that time, his nervous habits of taking towels and counter surfing were rather strong. I'm happy to report both of those habits have significantly decreased but he still enjoys bringing us an occasional towel. It's actually become rather cute and he doesn't destroy them any more.
Ely has really picked up our routine. He loves playing with our girls outside and also has taken to all the kids in the neighborhood. We try to take him everywhere we go, including vacations. He rides great in the car and doesn't get carsick anymore either. We brought him with us on a weekend trip to Hayward, WI and he was wonderful at the hotel and at all the festival events. He sure got a lot of attention. When we adopted him, he was used to sleeping in his kennel but I'm happy to say he no longer does that. He has full run of the house and is comfortable sleeping with us, the kids, or on occasion by himself wherever he chooses to lay his head. He's still heavily food motivated too and will definitely come find you when it's time to eat.
Ely goes to camp a few times a week when we know we're going to be gone all day. He loves it and has made a lot of friends there. We're thinking of inviting some of his friends to play at the dog park on his birthday this year.
We were fortunate that the veterinary cardiologist who did his original echo also does visits to our vet that we use. We also found out they're a RAGOM vet. Yay. Anyway, he re-examined Ely in the fall and it seems the murmur in his heart has dissipated so we're relieved about that. We'll continue to have him re-checked annually to make sure it doesn't get worse. For now, Ely can play with no restrictions but we do still monitor him and will have him rest if it looks like he needs it.
Our house was strangely quiet when our previous dog died. Ely has really filled that void and we couldn't be happier with him. He's a great dog and we feel blessed that the foster family selected us to be his forever family. Although we had a few ups and downs during our adjustments to each other, he's a terrific dog and we love him very much. We're considering finding a buddy for him in the fall. Thank you RAGOM for what you do and for your help brining Ely into our lives. We look forward to seeing everyone at Goldzilla in the fall.
