Shilo 12-219

Shilo arrived at my house on Wednesday evening, June 13. She had been at a temporary foster home for a few days. They had vetted her, given her several baths and combed out a million mats. She had already been spayed. She has no health issues other than her weight. We only need to go back to the vet in a couple of weeks for a booster on one of her shots. Thank you Rhonda!!!

Shilo is a seven-year old female. She is black with the coat of a longer coated dog....in the right light she looks like a Gordon Setter. She is currently very overweight. She weighs 92 pounds and she's the same height and build as one of my dogs and he weighs 55 pounds. Her owner was an elderly person that apparently fed Shilo human food. When I put a dish of dry dog food in front of her, she looks at me and I can see her thinking "Are you crazy? I'm not eating that stuff!" We are currently at a stand-off. I'll stop at the store and pick up some decent canned dog food later today and hopefully she'll start her shift from spaghetti and pork chops to dog food.

So far, it seems that Shilo is a bit shy when first meeting new people but warms up once she knows everything is okay. She is very sweet and a very nice girl. She met my two dogs and barely even looked at them, she has seen the cat and ignored her too. She is not a very active dog, probably because of her weight. She has no storm anxiety but she doesn't like to go outside when it's raining or too windy. She is totally housebroken and despite not wanting to go outside on the stormy Thursday, has not had a single accident. She can stay alone too. She seems to have no anxieties.

Shilo was surrendered to a small shelter in Minnesota with her dad Stubby 12-218....so if you were interested in adopting the two of them, we could figure out a way to make that happen.

Another week has passed and nobody has inquired about adopting Shylo. I don't get it. She's such a great dog. If there was an opening here, I'd be filling out that application right now. We've been dog-sitting and she gets along well with everyone that's been here. She'd love to have a family of her own. She has such a nice personality and I think she'd be a good therapy dog....or just a good pal to take on walks and hang around with.

Because it's been so hot, I haven't taken her on any more walks but she likes to hang around in the yard. She's smarter than my guys in that they both like to lay in the sun when it's about 99 degrees....she prefers to lay in the shade, preferably under a bush. She's still pretty chunky....not walking because of the heat isn't helping her diet, but she is now used to eating just kibble, so that's a huge improvement. I've attached more pictures...once she's lost more weight, she'll be just gorgeous!  Contact your placement advisor if you'd like to meet her.

Shylo has made herself at home...finally. She now has been on the beds, still no regular furniture, but she has figured out the beds are soft and a good place to hang out. So far she has not come onto a bed during the night when humans are in the bed, just when it's made up and humans are in the room doing something else.

Friday was bath day at our house. The resident hounds needed to be bathed because one of them was going to be a therapy dog on Saturday morning and the other needed to be bathed because I never knew who I'd take until I was walking out the door....so they both needed to be ready. We do baths most Fridays. Since I had the whole day off of work and it was over 100 degrees in my backyard, I decided we could do the baths outside, using the hose and the kid-pool. No need to mess up the laundry room when it was warmer outside than it was in the basement.

Since I was bathing dogs, I decided Shylo needed another bath. She'd had multiple baths at her temporary foster home so she wasn't too dirty. She enjoyed the bath...but she was twice as hard to bathe as my guys because of her girth and because she had long flowing fur in many places. Once they were all clean, I started trimming at my two guys, but mine were both pretty under control....so I focused on Shylo. I cut tons of hair off of Shylo. The transformation was amazing. She looks like she's lost 20 pounds! Her belly is actually several inches off of the ground and she has nice legs. I would say she's gorgeous now! Because she's so black, the photos don't do her justice. I'll try to get some better photos during the coming week.

She's ready to find her new home....if you think it might be you, email your placement advisor.

Shilo continues to adapt to life in foster care. She is doing well. It's been dark and raining for most of the week and she has no storm anxiety. She does not want to go outside when it's raining or storming or even too windy, but she's not anxious....she simply refuses to go outside. She has not had a single potty accident in the house either. She is now eating dog food. I still need to add some canned dog food to the kibble, but she does eat it....our next step is to get her to just eat the kibble.

Shilo is a super easy foster. She isn't very demanding. She isn't pushy and I hope she doesn't learn any bad habits from the two dudes she is currently living with. She has picked up the occasional dog-toy but isn't too interested in actually engaging with it. She does seem to like the soft toys we have, but she's not the kind of dog that always has to have something in her mouth. She is also not destructive in any way.

Stubby's foster and I would love to place them together....we know it's a stretch since we aren't located near each other....but we are going to give it a try. Contact your placement advisor if you would like to start the process of meeting the pair.

Imagine if these two were reunited...how sweet that would be for them.
