Nala 12-196

Profile

Please welcome Nala 12-196 to RAGOM. Nala was surrendered with her roommate Hemmy 12-197...

Nala appears to be a yellow lab-Chesapeake mix. She weighs in at 83lbs. She is around 15 lbs over her ideal weight. Other than weight, Nala is in very good health. She was brought up to date on vaccines and was negative for worms, heartworm and Lyme disease. Nala was spayed on 5/24/2012 so she is still recovering from that somewhat. Nala is totally housebroke. No accidents in the house. She does seem to be a picky eater. I think she may have been fed people food previously. I'm working on getting her to like good dog food.

Nala will pull when walked with a flat collar but walks great with a Gentle Leader. I'm working on building her strength and stamina. She tires easily now. As with most young dogs, Nala wants to be the center of attention and gets excited. Nala know basic commands of: sit, come, and lay down. She seems eager to learn new things. I'm working on shaking hands.

Nala was separated from Hemmy and other dogs for a day and did not do well. At this point, I think she needs another dog to show her the ropes. It would be nice to see Nala and Hemmy be adopted together but I think another dog near her age or older could do fine with her.

Nala does need work on manners of jumping up on people. She has put her paws on the kitchen counter but hasn't taken anything. Nala hasn't really learned to play with toys yet. I just learned she seems to know fetch with a large tennis ball. She has no inappropriate chewing. No interest in waste baskets either. Nala seems to be a pretty well behaved young dog that only needs minor work and exercise.

Here's a summary of Needs and Knowns for Nala 12-196:

  • Nala needs to be exercised and diet controlled
  • Nala knows basic commands
  • Nala hates crates and does great with free roam
  • Nala rides very well in cars
  • Nala gets along great with cats and other dogs

I've had Nala less than a week so there is much more to learn about this sweet dog.

Updates

Wednesday, August 8, 2012

Howdy folks, Nala here again,

Lots to report since my last update.

My ear infection is all healed up so I'm not shaking my head any more. It feels much better now.

I have another foster brother. His name is Yukon. He was stinky and matted when he got here so FD had to give him 3 baths and lots of brushing and trimming. That all took some of FD's personal time for me away but I was ok with that since Yukon needed some help. He's a very nice boy and we get along great.

A few days later FD brought home 2 really good looking big Golden Retriever boys. FD said they were new RAGOM dogs. There names were Shadow and Lucky. I tried to flirt with them but they didn't seem interested. They were only here a couple days until they had fosters and a ride lined up.

We continue to walk twice every day and FD plays fetch with me most days. FD says I am getting much better at fetch but still need some work.

A couple days ago my buddy Hemmy had some visitors. They came back and adopted him. Lucky Hemmy. FD says someone will come to visit me sometime and then come back and adopt me. Could that be you?

To meet me, please contact your placement adviser.

Thanks for checking in on me

FD has been busy so I'm doing my own update again.

Since the last update I have been losing some weight. I have lost over 12 lbs now and am feeling much more like a 3 year old. The reason I know how much I lost is that FD took me and Hemmy to the vet for another dose of Frontline flea and tick preventive and Heartguard heartworm preventive. We always get weighed at Dr. Sarah's office every time we go there. We both had been scratching our ears and shaking our heads so, Dr. Sarah checked our ears and found out be both had ear infections.Dr Sarah was also impressed with the great job that Mnsnap did on my spay surgery. Sadly, Dr.Sarah said I could stand to loose yet another 10 lbs. I guess I was a bit Chunky when I came to RAGOM.

FD continues to walk me twice a day but has had to cut the distance because of the heat. I sure am glad to live in a air conditioned house. We go out and play fetch sometimes also. FD says I am getting very good at dropping the ball for him when he asks.

FD says I am getting better at meeting people and other dogs. FD is very impressed how gentle I am with my housemate Tiger the 8 week old kitten. Tiger climbs on me and attacks my tail. I haven't even growled once. I do get up and move if Tiger is getting too crazy. Tiger does cuddle up and sleep with me a lot.

FD took all us dogs to a lake last week but there wasn't a beach for us to go in gradually so we stayed on the dock. Maybe next time we will go to a better dog lake. I think I could like the water.

Here's a summary of what I would like in my furever home:

  • Another dog near my age [3] would be great but not mandatory [the older dogs here aren't real playful]
  • Cats are fine with me
  • Kids would be great because I could get attention from all of them
  • Daily walks and play sessions
  • I like to sleep in beds and on couches

A couple other points FD thought I should throw in are:

  • I've had no potty accidents at all in the house and been left over 8 hours.
  • I shed very little for a Lab
  • I don't resource guard at all [kitty can eat out of my bowl while I eat]

6/9/2012

Nala here,

FD thought I should do this update to tell all the recent happenings and my side of my story.

To start from the beginning of my Ragom days, I was surrendered by my previous owner in central Iowa. Then I was transported to a temp foster in the Twin Cities. That night I started going into heat because I wasn't spayed. Everyone really fussed over me a bunch and stayed up all night with me. Come to find out, they thought I was going to have puppies. I was very nervous and whined and cried a bunch and had swelled up very much. I am a bit overweight and had puppies before so things really did look like I was pregnant. The next morning it was off to the vet to get x-rays to see if I really was pregnant. My buddy Hemmy, that I lived with, wasn't neutered yet so it really was a possibility. No puppies in me. I did enjoy all the attention I got but really was miserable being in heat.

Later the second day I went to boarding and lucky Hemmy got taken by Foster Dad. A foster was found for me but I needed to get spayed before I went there. I had spay surgery by the great people at Mnsnap and then FD picked me up to temp foster me while I recovered. I got to be back with my buddy Hemmy, another foster dog, Murphy, FD's resident Ziggy and Itsey the house cat. I was pretty miserable the day after surgery. The aches and still being in heat was really taking its toll on me.

The next day FD loaded all us dogs up in the Suburban and took me to my new foster. I was ok on the ride but became agitated and kind of crazy once we got there. FD thought I would settle down after he left. I didn't settle down at all and clearly wasn't happy at all with all that had happened. My new FM and FD were up all night trying to get me to calm down but nothing worked. I just wasn't happy at all. FD and the pack of dogs came and got me later that day. I was much happier with less people and more dogs at the time.

I'm very sorry for giving the new FM and FD such a bad time. They didn't deserve that at all. I really wasn't my true self for a few days. Just way too much to adjust to in a short time.

After a few days back with FD, the other foster dog Murphy was adopted. I acted a little crazy and demanding when Murphy's new family came to visit and when they came to take him home with them. FD wasn't impressed with my behavior, but I still was in heat.

A few days later I finally started going out of heat and my true self started coming back. My buddy Hemmy went to Mnsnap to get neutered and I was alone in the house for a while and was just fine. I really don't need other dogs around any more. FD was very glad to see that.

FD has been feeding me good food and walking me twice a day. I am getting back in shape and can go 3 1/2 miles or more at a time. I am walking 5 miles or more per day most days. Hemmy is a bit slower at gaining strength and stamina so we don't go as far as I could at this point. Ziggy can do circles around both of us. She barely pants after 3 1/2 miles. I can't wait for the day I can show her up. Itsey the house cat walked over 2 miles with us dogs the other day and put me to shame. Who ever heard of a cat walking with dogs anyhow??

6/9/2012

Something must be going on today. FD was up very early. He fed us and walked Hemmy and I. Ziggy was too sleepy yet to go with. FD left for a hour or so then started loading some of our stuff in the Suburban. I was very excited and did my best to get in the way. Ziggy ran out the door and waited by the truck. FD had to call her a few times before she came back in the house. Then FD took me and Hemmy out and got us loaded up.

We ended up at Chuck and Don's pet food store in Blaine for a RAGOM Meet and Greet event!! FD was worried that I would become a real handful but I proved him wrong. I was very good after being just a little excited at first. Tons of people came and petted me and told me what a pretty girl I am. Lots of other RAGOM dogs there also. FD said that there was at least 1 family that came there just to meet me and Hemmy. Hopefully I charmed them more than Mr. calm Hemmy did. Maybe they would adopt both of us?

FD was very impressed with my behavior and rewarded us when we got home with a special supper. A short nap and I was ready to go walking. Another 2 miles and then pooped out for the night.

FD says he is thinking about taking Hemmy, me and Ziggy next weekend to be in a parade in St. Louis Park. I'm up for it. I'll have to do my best to convince FD to take us.

On another note, I have started playing with a select few of the toys here. FD has played fetch a few times outside but I lose interest after 4 or 5 tosses.

Nala

Tuesday, June 5, 2012

Nala is starting to show her real personality now since she is out of heat. I think she will do fine as a only dog or with other dogs big or small. She has healed from the spay surgery.  Spay surgery does not stop the heat cycle if it is done during heat.

Nala is very affectionate and playful as most 3 year old dogs are. Nala has been jumping up less now and is getting much better at sit. Nala seems to be praise motivated. She doesn't require treats to train. Shake hands is doing very well but still needs work.

Nala is building strength and stamina. We now walk 3 1/2 miles. Nala is now working the ditches on the walks. She seems to have fairly good tracking and hunting instincts. She is slimming down also. I'd guess she has lost 5 lbs or maybe more since she came here.

Nala still gets very excited when other people are around. I'm working on her social skills with people. I will be water testing Nala sometime soon since she is healed up. I'm thinking she will be thrilled with water.
