Piper was rescued from Minneapolis Animal Control this past Tuesday (May 1).  He was picked up as a stray on April 13th and then quarantined for kennel cough and scheduled to be euthanized on Wednesday (May 2) at 8am.  RAGOM got a tip that this innocent little 6 mos. pup had hours left to his life.

This little guy was uncontrollably excited when I picked him up from his gracious transport and rescue mom on Tuesday.  Let me just say, anyone would be exhilarated by freedom after being caged for almost three weeks with no real contact from other humans or animals.

The first night was rough as he didn't want to be in a kennel, needless to say.  I laid next to his kennel for hours talking to him softly until he finally fell asleep.  The next day I kept him very busy with training, walking, meet and greets at Caribou, and then finally to the vet.  Everyone loved him!  The vet couldn't believe he was ever considered to have kennel cough, let alone slated to be euthanized!  He said he is a very lucky, healthy, 51lb, approximately 6mos old handsome yellow lab.  He is the most lovable, adorable, and smart dog.  He has learned so much in this very short time.  I took him with me for a jog yesterday and he had learned to keep pace and not tug on his lead within a half mile. Incredibly smart with words and routines.

The other night he went to dinner at McCormicks in Wayzata (super dog friendly restaurant :-).  So many people had stopped to greet him and wanted to put in applications with Ragom after learning he was up for adoption.  He is very gentle, loves to play, wants to please, and  great with kids.  He is a little timid when meeting dogs but I think he would do well with another family dog as he doesn't like to be alone.  He is doing well with potty training and hasn't chewed anything in my home.  I keep him active with chew toys and bones.  He has already become protective with unfamiliar noises.  He has been sleeping well in his crate since the first night and we use it for car rides.  This little man is going to be adopted quick and I will miss him greatly.

FD rescued me from boarding on Wednesday. Boy was I happy to get out of there. They took good care of me but, there's nothing like the free world. We went and watched FD'S sons baseball game. Wow, did I have fun. Wanted to chase all the foul balls but they wouldn't let me. Everyone said I was so well behaved for my age.

I sure took to FD right away. He was surprised how I snuggled up to him at bed time and slept all night, except for when he let me out at 3 in the morning just to make sure I didn't have an accident the first night home. I got to meet the resident RAGOM Charlotte and the 2 cats. Not so sure on this cat thing. They like to hide on me and it makes me mad so I sit and bark at them. Sometimes when they are not looking I get to sneak up on them and pounce then chase them. I guess that's not a good thing, but I'm just a puppy and I'm learning. Well, FD says I have to go outside so he's taking over. 

 

This handsome boy will make some family very happy. He is just one big lover boy. He loves to snuggle at night and would much rather be next to someone than anything else. He is really well behaved for a 6 month old that was found as a stray. I don't know how he ended up a stray but, now he's a RAGOM dog and will get the chance to live the golden life and he deserves that.

He knows how to sit and lay down. He comes when called well, 98% of the time. There's been a little adjustments we've been making as he likes to counter surf when no one is watching. He has gotten better in the few days since he's been here. He's still adjusting to the resident dog but, I've found out it's not all his fault and things have gotten better. They are now playing all the time instead of just outside. Piper does have a little resource guarding with food and sometimes toys but, I think that's just because of being a stray and having to fend for himself. He has gotten a little better with the toys and I've been working with him on treats and food. Bones seem to be the biggest problem until he's done with it for the first time then you can just grab it without any problems.

When it comes to other dogs he seems to be just fine with them. He met a English Bulldog and a Chihuahua on Wednesday, then a miniature poodle today and just wanted to play with them. I think with my resident they both wanted to be the dominant one and neither one was going to give that up but, I think Piper is backing down now. With all that said, right now I think Piper would do best in a home with older kids.  He gets along great with my 14 year old, and somewhere he will get lots of activity. He has a lot that needs to get burned off everyday.

He doesn't like to be in his crate, it's a task we're working on. I think he'd do fine with other dogs. Not so sure about cats but, we're working on that too. I don't think he'd harm them just chase them. Piper will be a great addtion to just about any family. He is very smart and will need to be worked with. He's still a pup and don't think he's had much training but, like I said he is well behaved. If he sounds like he may be for you please contact your placement advisor.
