Amadea aka “Dea” came to stay with me on St. Patrick’s Day all the way from North Dakota. I guess that was my luck of the Irish.

Dea is an 8 month old Golden mix, who as you can see, looks 100% Golden. She has a 100% Golden personality and is very sweet. She’s currently sleeping on the floor of my office behind by chair.

She came to RAGOM through one of our adopters. The adopter saw a sign advertising her and responded to her original owners. The adopter took her with the understanding that she was going to be surrendered to RAGOM. Dea was found on a construction site when she was a couple of months old and was taken home. Her original owners kept her until she became too large for their small apartment. Dea is very friendly and loves to give kisses. Even though she’s not as high energy as some of the other dogs I’ve fostered, she does have typical puppy energy and needs lots of exercise. Dea loves to go on walks but pulls some with just a regular collar. She hated the gentle leader at first and fought it for about 3 ½ blocks. After that, she accepted it and hasn’t had a problem with it since. Now when she sees it and the leash she knows it’s walk time.

My 12 year old grand-daughter was with me when Dea was picked up. Dea LOVED her and spent about ¾ of the ride back with her head and other parts of her body on my grand-daughter’s lap. However, Dea does jump when greeting you so she might be a little too exuberant for small children.

Dea loves to ride in the car and after you establish that she really can’t ride shotgun, she either lies down or sits and looks out the window.

Dea is totally house broken and we have not had one accident since she’s been here. She had free roam of the house and does pretty good but being a puppy, she will chew on inappropriate items, like shoes, if they are left out. Dea also barks. Mostly when she is outside and it is a greeting/play bark. We are working on this but it’s a work in progress. She loves the outside and really enjoys our fenced yard. She thinks that the birds are there for her to chase.

We had our first thunderstorm today and other than looking around to see where that noise came from, the thunder didn’t bother her at all so I don’t think she has any storm anxiety. Dea has no recall and at times doesn’t appear to know her name. I tried all variations of her name with no success so I settled on Dea. While Dea will let you take anything from her, when she’s outside, she thinks it’s a game and will run away and try and get you to play. Inside, we don’t have this issue.

I currently do not have a resident dog and Dea is constantly trying to get the dog next door to play through the fence. The adopter who surrendered Dea to us had 3 Golden’s of her own and I think Dea is missing her playmates.

What I believe Dea needs from her furever family is someone who understands puppy behavior, is dog experienced and is committed to taking her to obedience training to help correct any issues she may have. She will need someone to continue to work with her on her barking issues through positive reinforcement so it is no longer an issue. Someone with a dog already in their home or regular play dates with neighbors or friends would really be good for Dea. It would help with her energy level and help her learn the ropes so she can have a truly Golden life.

She would do best with a physical fence because of chasing the birds (and I’m sure any rabbits or squirrels if they ventured into the yard.) She may do alright with an invisible fence but she may blow right through it if she saw something that she really wanted. Because of this, I’m not sure how she’d do with cats. I believe if they ran, she would chase them. I also believe that she would do best with a family that would have someone around most of the day. It appears that most of her less than stellar behaviors occur when she is bored. She’s never been in a crate and I haven’t tried her in one so I’m not sure how she’d do being crated.

Dea has her vet appointment on Wednesday and a date will be set for her spay at that time. Once she’s released by the vet, she’ll be ready to go to her furever home. Is it with you?

I can’t believe that we’ve had Dea almost a month now (Wow, does time fly). In that month, she has made wonderful progress. She still barks but it is significantly less than it was originally. I believe most of the excessive barking was just her way of dealing with being in a whole new place. She does stop when you tell her quiet. Most of her barking is at other dogs and if she can greet that dog, even if it’s through a fence, she immediately stops barking and wants to play. I’m also finding, that in our walks around the neighborhood, she barks no more than any of the other dogs and a whole lot less than others. So, maybe, my reaction to the barking was my issue not hers. She has also made progress with her recall but she’s still not reliable to come when you call her unless she’s ready to. Therefore, I still think that obedience classes are needed to help her take that next step. Because I did something to my knee about the time we got Dea, I’ve taken her to doggie daycare a couple of times because it’s been a little difficult for me to get her out on the walks she needs. She loves daycare and I can hardly hold her when we get there. She runs right up to the door and can’t wait to go in. (I should say that the feeling is mutual with the daycare staff, they love her too.) She gets along great with the other dogs even though the first time there, she was positive that the 5 lb dauschund going to eat her on the spot.

Dea’s new favorite toy is a Jolly Ball. I had one that I have for when my horses have to be in a stall, so it’s horse size not dog size. I brought it home to see what she’d do. She circled it, barked at it, nosed it (and jumped back when it moved), licked it and then pounced on it. She then proceeded to pick it up and carry it around, throwing it periodically. She pretty much ignores the other toys when she’s outside where the ball is.

Inside, the rubber chicken is still number one. One of the places that we walk is where the soccer and ballfield’s are. Therefore, there is a lot of activity when there are games going on. We’re stopped at least 2-3 times each walk for someone to tell us how beautiful they think Miss Dea is. As a result, Dea has met all sizes and ages of people. She still likes to jump a little, mostly with adults, but is getting better. Just yesterday, we met and appropriately greeted 2 ½ yr old twins in a stroller and I’d guess about a 4 yr old boy who came running up as fast as he could to pet her. In both cases, she careful licked the hands that were outstretched to her even though her whole body was wagging with her tail.

Dea likes to “help” mow the yard. She helps by running laps around the yard to make sure that FD didn’t miss any spots. While I am blessed to be able to work from home so that I’m with Dea most of the day, I believe that once she got used to the routine, she would do fine with being left for a normal working day. It is my understanding that she was left all day in her first home. I am working on getting Dea cat tested and hopefully will get that done sometime in the next few days. The only cat we’ve encountered was one that was laying in its yard. She perked up her ears and was interested but didn’t growl or lunge.

Dea is a wonderful girl and while she may be a mix, she has a 100% Golden soul and personality. She will make a wonderful addition to your home.

Hi, Dea here. My FM left the computer open and I see she hasn’t written anything in a while. (What’s with that Mom?) so let me tell you about myself:

Last week I had what FM called spay done. Boy did it make me feel really funny for a while. I kept having to sit down and my legs didn’t seem to want to work very well. It also made my tummy itchy but I did really good and didn’t lick very much so I didn’t have to wear anything funny on my head. I’ m all healed up now and back to normal. The hair on my tummy is even starting to grow back.

I LOVE people, I LOVE to take walks, I LOVE to run in the backyard, I LOVE my Kong and I LOVE my stuffed toys. I would LOVE to have another dog to play with every day but FM & FD don’t have anyone but me right now. Oh, I really like this roly, bouncy thing. FM puts treats/kibble in it and then I roll it around or pick it up and drop it and the stuff falls out and I get to eat it.

I’m walking really good on something FM calls a gentle leader. I don’t really like it but I know if I want to walk I have to have it on, so I don’t fight it or try and get it off. FM and me just got back from a walk. While we were walking we ran into two little boys, ages 5 & 7, they came over and gave me lots of pets and I gave them lots of kisses, then they had to leave. That made me sad, I wanted to go with them. FM promised me that we’d try and find me my own kids. That would be really cool and I would love them forever.

Oops, FM has caught me and says I have to tell everything. I really can’t think of what she’s talking about…. Oh yeah, there’s this barking thing. I don’t know what the big deal is, the other dogs in the neighborhood do it all the time and their parents don’t do anything but FM & FD are always telling me quiet, so I’ve learned to stop barking when they say that but sometimes I just can’t help myself and the bark comes out. FM says that I’m much improved but that it’s still a work in progress. FM says AND…well, it’ s just that, well, I really like being outside and sometimes I really don’t want to come in so I don’t come when I’m called. But I mean, like, sometimes I do so that makes it alright doesn’t it??? FM is giving me the look so I guess it’s not. We’re working on it. I really like cheese so sometimes I’ll come to get the cheese but sometimes, there are just too many other things, like really interesting smells, and sticks and well, other stuff.

FM says I have that to work on too. FM says to tell you that I’m really a sweet girl (and of course, very pretty) but I’m still very much a puppy. I’m learning but she says I need someone who understands a puppy’s energy and is willing to continue to help me become the very best Golden I can be. She also says that another dog would be really great to help me with my socialization plus I’d have someone to play with. FM says to tell you I’ve been left alone for about 4 hrs and I did just great. I bet I could go even longer because I sleep all night without having to go out. Can I come live with you and we can be a forever family? Please.

I’ve had Dea for a week now and am happy to report she’s making GReat progress. Her barking has improved 60-70%, maybe even 80%. She still barks but not at everything and mostly in response to the other dogs in the neighborhood barking. She’s learned that when I say quiet, if she stops, she gets a treat. I’m think her initial excessive barking came from her unfamiliarity with this new place she came to. After all, it was the 4th place she’d been at in about 2 weeks. I guess I’d have been a little nervous too.

Her recall is still not good but we’re working on it. She comes now about 20% of time when she’s called which is a GReat improvement over 0%. She recognizes her names now because when you call her, she always looks.

She is a typical Golden. She wants to be with her people and loves to give kisses. She’s a real cuddlebug. She will follow you from room to room and is still not convinced you can’t get out of that little room without coming out the same door you went in.

She has a puppy’s energy and we’re walking 3-5 miles per day which she loves! She does a happy dance when she sees the leash and gentle leader come out. She likes to chase the ball but hasn’t quite learned to bring it back. She takes treats nicely and you can take anything away from her with no problems.

We went to PetSmart on Tuesday and she loved it! She appropriately greeted a 3-month-old Lab puppy and two small dogs. She loved all the attention and pets she got from everyone. The only problem we had was leaving, she didn’t want to.

I still believe that Dea would do best in a home with another dog or someone who has friends or neighbors that can bring their dog for regular play dates. She loves to run when she’s outside so a physical fence would probably be best. However, she’s one smart cookie so would probably learn very quickly to respect an invisible fence. Cats are still an unknown but since she chases the birds and a squirrel that was brave enough to venture into the yard, I think she would also chase a cat.

Older children would be best. When Dea is demanding attention, she can be a little mouthy. It’s very soft, she never closes her mouth and she stops when you tell her no but small children may not understand that she’s not biting. Obedience classes are highly recommended for Dea to help her be the best-behaved dog she can be.

This lovable girl is ready to find her furever family and become their best friend ever!

Foster mom.
