Bonnie is a 1 year-old female Golden Retriever mix that just arrived this week. She came into the RAGOM family with her two babies 12-013 Loki and 12-014 Callie, and was transported by our wonderful volunteers all the way from a reservation on the border of South Dakota and Nebraska. Bonnie has never been in a house and everything she does is a new experience. She is an incredibly sweet and smart little girl, and a wonderful mama. Bonnie mastered the stairs and wood floors on her first day, and even though she has free roam of our house, she has not had a single potty accident. We played fetch today with her tail wagging like crazy and she play bowed and pounced around…..such a happy girl for having a difficult start in life.
She is still nursing her puppies and they will stay with her for a few more weeks until they are 8 weeks old. We have fallen in love with her, and her expressions and play pawing tell us she so appreciates every nice thing people do for her. Now that she is in RAGOM, she will be treated like the wonderful dog she is!

Bonnie is being treated for sarcoptic mange. Sarcoptic mange is a contagious skin disease found in dogs, caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite. These mites burrow through the skin causing intense itching and irritation. The dogs scratch to the point of making their hair fall out. It's presumptive diagnosis based on her level of itching and the condition of her skin and fur (or lack of fur) because no mites were present in the skin scraping. Sarcoptic mange is treated through a serious of ivermac injections that occur over six weeks. She will be significantly less contagious after her second treatment next week. Bonnie started taking prednisone yesterday to try to calm some of the intense itching. I can’t believe what an improvement it has made! She spent 90% of her timescratching, biting her skin and rolling across the carpet to try to get some relief for days. Poor girl!! One day of prednisone cut her scratching in half.

Bonnie will receive her final treatment of ivermac the first of February. It couldtake up to a year for her skin to completely heal and resume normal hair growth.
Bonnie is 61 pounds and needs to gain 15 lbs. I'm guessing she has not had access to food on a regular basis and she acts like she is very hungry. She had her vaccinations and will need one more one more round of vaccines in a week.
I’m going to try to get her groomed over the next week. Once she completes the treatment for mange, and is eating very high quality dog food, her fur will grow and she is going to be a stunning dog. Please keep checking on our sweet girl as we learn more about her, and she continues to heal.
