Indy 12-001

Greeting from Grand Forks, ND!

Boy oh Boy do I have a cutie here! Welcome to RAGOM land Mr. Indy! Indy was picked up as a stray in Detroit Lakes, MN and after no one came to claim him, joined us at RAGOM. He stayed on at the shelter with a fellow RAGOM volunteer (thanx Jessica H.) and I was able to pick him up on Monday 01/16/12. I have only had him for 48hrs so not much is known about his antics yet, but I do know he is your typical 4-5 month old puppy!

He is a beautiful blonde fellow with white on the tips of his toes, tip of his tail, and a patch on his nose. He has kept his kennel completely clean and was quiet in it all night his first two nights here. He fussed for the first 10-15 minutes and then not another peep until morning! He goes in willingly with a treat and is very food motivated!

Indy went to the vet today and had his distemper combination vaccine, which will need to be boostered in 3-4 weeks. He had already had his Rabies and Bordetella at the shelter. He was also dewormed and had a negative fecal exam. He is scheduled to be neutered next week, so until then, we get to enjoy him and learn more about him! After he has healed from his surgery, he will be ready to go to his forever home!

Indy is a very sweet puppy who has an innate desire to please you. He has not given a second glance to our cat, respects my "older" residents personal space, and has no idea what it means to stop playing with our resident puppy who is 7 months old. I think they could play and play all day! He does not exhibit any resource guarding, has not counter surfed, and has free roam of the house when we are home to supervise (no accidents!). All three dogs share a water bowl and it is not an issue. One thing we must work on is his walking on a leash...using a flat collar is out of the question at the moment as he just lays flat on the ground like a piece of jell-o. However, I put a harness on him and it works like a champ. He will not jump into the car, he is too timid and requires lifting in and out. It was reported that he gets car sick on occasion, but he did just fine all the way back from Detroit Lakes to Grand Forks (2 1/2 hrs) and back and forth to the vet today with no issues. He is in a crate in my car so perhaps that has something to do with it. I'm sure his short life has not afforded him the luxury of many car rides and he will get accustomed to them with time!

Here is what I think Indy will need in a forever home:

  • someone committed to obedience classes so he will learn to be a confident & well behaved dog
  • understanding that he is a puppy and requires ALOT of work and patience. He chews things, he gets into things, he is curious. These cannot be annoying traits to you, they must be understood as age appropriate
  • someone who is committed financially to his vet expenses for a healthy life, long into his senior years.
  • someone who is active and willing to exercise him daily. He is an exuberant young'un and is happiest when exhausted!

In return, Indy will bond with you and be loyal to you. He will love you and trust you and grow up with you. What more can a person ask for??

Here is a new pic of Mr. Indy. I can't believe it has only been a month since Indy joined our family. It feels like he has always been with us. He is a wonderful pup. We truly have fallen in love with him and enjoy his puppy energy. One of his favorite games is playing with an empty milk jug. I'll knock it away from him and he chases down and brings it back to do it all over again. He is very tolerant of Tyler, thankfully, and he has only had a few accidents :). We love how he moans and groans when he is getting "loves" from us. Thank you again for introducing him to us.

Indy was neutered today and he is so sweet, the vet staff allowed him to "recover" on one of the residents beds instead of in a kennel!

He continues to grow and gain confidence in our home and loves, loves, loves to cuddle! He is timid and does not get on the furniture at all. If you want him up with you, you have to lift him up. He listens super well for a puppy and is just a joy to have around. Today he went to the vet in the SUV without being in a crate and he was nervous but did well, no car sickness just some whining. We will continue to see how he does traveling in the back as opposed to being in a crate.

Although Indy does not pick up toys, shoes, etc, he does seem to have a fetish with socks. He eats them. Not chews them, eats them. He has vomited up two socks. So now, much to the dismay of the kids & hubby, all socks, underwear, gloves, etc MUST be picked up off the floor and bedroom doors closed. I have been trying to get them to cooperate in this endeavor for years, guess I just needed to bring a sock eater home with me! Who knew!
