Juan 11-423

Merry Christmas from one South Dakotan to another.  Merry Christmas from one South Dakotan to another, from Jennifer.

I'd like to introduce Juan. He is a six to seven year old neutered male. The stories from the shelter in South Dakota have two versions....one is that he and a St. Bernard pal were found wandering along the interstate....the other is that he and the St. Bernard were found tied up outside the shelter's receiving area one morning when the staff came to work. I'm not sure which is true, but both are sad. His trials and tribulations have not affected his personality one bit. Juan is a lover. Juan was not his name, he came to the shelter with no tags, so a shelter worker named him Juan. At this point, he doesn't even look at me when I say it.

He arrived at my house in St. Paul about 3 p.m. on Sunday. He met my two goldens without even a sniff. Shortly after his arrival I decided he needed a bath, so I took him to the laundry room and gave him bath....he loved it. Later in the day, the cat came out and she has so far totally ignored him. That's a sign she doesn't think he is any type of threat to her reign as queen.

Because of his history, I called the vet as soon as they opened today and we got an appointment this morning. We now know he weighs 81 pounds....he needs to lose 25 or so pounds.  Other than being overweight, he seems to be in great health, good teeth, clear eyes, healthy sounding heart. He also did not have a fever. He has been sneezing, so I wondered, but the vet didn't think he was sick and that the sneezing should stop in a day or so. He now has had his rabies vaccine. He already had a microchip.  They took blood for his heartworm test and I brought a fecal sample to see if has any parasites...they'll call tomorrow with the results. He will need a booster of his distemper shot shortly after Christmas.

As far as exactly what breed he is, so far the consensus has been hound of some sort....maybe a bloodhound, lab mix? We won't know for sure. What we do know for sure is that he is as sweet as they come and he really really likes everyone he meets.

The dog count at my house is now back to three dogs, my two and Juan. Juan was a super guy with the poodle who spent the last week bugging him. Funny as he never has bothered any of the other dogs I've had at my house. But he was QUITE infatuated with Juan.

We've been on a few walks, and Juan walks very nicely if he's the only dog and he has a gentle leader on. He still gets tired before too long, so we generally only go a few blocks out, then turn around.

I'm attaching more pictures...he's hard to photograph, he never wants to look into the camera, but I think you can get a better idea of what he looks like now. He's continues to be very sweet! I'm sure I'm imagining it, but I think I can almost see his waste line now....he has continued on his diet and I bet he must be down a couple more pounds. Check in for more on Juan...or contact your placement advisor if you'd like to meet him.

Also.......We'd like to thank Jennifer from South Dakota for thinking of Juan during the holiday season!  Thank You!!!!

Juan is doing well in his foster home. He seems to just go with the flow. He has pretty much stopped sneezing so he's now joined us full time. He is still in a kennel when nobody is home. He goes in easily with just a treat. So far I have not heard him bark so I don't know if he sounds like a hound...he does look like one. He actually looks like a very large beagle.

He loves to chew on hard dog toys....like nylabones and so far has not shown any interest in any other type toy. He ignores the cat. I'm not sure I've mentioned that when he was sneezing so much, he was quarantined in the bedroom where our pet rabbit lives. He totally ignores her too! She lives in a huge dog crate and when she thinks we are ignoring her, she starts to fling her toys around....and so far, he even ignores that. When she's out, he doesn't seem to care either. So far, I haven't seen a rabbit outside (we have a huge hawk living in the neighborhood) but he doesn't seem to chase the squirrels.

He knows how to sit, he still doesn't even look at me when I call him Juan...I've started calling him Dude too, but he doesn't look at that either. He does respond to the word "come" so he's not hard to get in the house when he's outside.

I'm attaching a photo of him sitting with my two goldens....it was not hard to get him to do that. (Juan is on the left) I suspect he was somebody's pet at one point in his life. He does get on the furniture and he's very at ease on the various types of flooring we have in the house...carpet, tile and wood.

We'll be babysitting over the Christmas holiday...it will be interesting to see how he does with the newcomers.  Tune in after Christmas for more on Juan....and more photos too.
