Rex 11-407

Profile

Rex is about 1.5 year old 70 lb. male Golden mix. We're not sure what he is a mix of but he is sure a cutie. We call him Rexie because it fits his personality. Rexie was an outside dog before he came to our foster home in the Twin Cities and was not house trained but learned to go outside from the first day he arrived and has had no accidents. We go outside every couple of hours when we are home. Rexie doesn't really tell us when he wants to go outside so we are training him to ring the jingle bells by the door. Rexie went to the vet and is now up-to-date on his shots. He will be going back to the vet in a couple of days to get neutered.
In the past 5 days we have learned a lot about this good looking guy. Rexie does not like cats or pictures of cats. He sometimes barks at other dogs when we are on a walk and sometimes he doesn't bark so we're not sure how he'd do living with another dog. He's got one powerful tail and would seriously knock over small children. Rexie is a very quick learner. The first day he displayed undesirable behavior like jumping up on people and putting his paws up on the kitchen table. Within one day...yes one day, he learned to stay off the table and keep his nose away from the table. When we sit down to eat, he lays down. Rexie has not jumped up on any people since the first couple of days.
Rexie knows sit, drop (lie down), come, and give. Rexie goes into his crate with a little treat incentive when we leave (4 hours) and at night. In the morning or when we come home Rexie is wagging his tail and butt so much the whole crate shakes! Rexie would love a home with a fenced yard so he can play ball and run happy laps. Rexie's favorite is tummy rubs; he totally relaxes and closes his eyes. He should go to obedience/dog school not only for training but for the benefits of socialization and bonding. Rexie is one sweet, loveable, happy dog.

Rexie's doing great!  He attended the RAGOM event at Petco and enjoyed all the activity, attention and yummy treats!  He loves going for car rides and wants to be where ever people are.

Rexie has recovered nicely from his surgery and is ready to play!

After getting to know Rex better it appears he is a bit of a high energy dog.  This could be partly due to the fact that he is 1.5 years old and that he was in a shelter for the previous 3 weeks.  We take Rexie outside 3-4 times per day to play ball and run and take him for 1-2 walks as well as take him with us on rides to do errands.  Rexie just love to be with people!

Now here's the 2 week challenge - Rexie went to the vet and was neutered - he had  cryptorchidism (one testicle had not descended) which means he had 2 incisions.

The Vet's orders say that it is very important to keep him quiet and on leash for short walks only - no off leash activity.  No running or jumping for 2 weeks.  And no licking!  FM designed a t-shirt with straps to prevent him from licking.  Rexie doesn't mind having someone put it on and then taking it off when he goes outside and then putting it on again.  Good boy!
