RAGOM Fans -- it's my privilege to introduce Ms. Lucy! A very sweet senior looking for a new home through no fault of her own. Since being adopted from the Humane Society almost 5 years ago, Lucy's been a loved family member. Sadly, her mom now has long term health problems that mean she can no longer adequately care for her companion. Thank you to her extended family for trusting RAGOM to find Lucy her next loving home.

Lucy is a Yellow Lab, best guess is about 9 years old. She passed her well dog vet exam, including senior blood panel, with flying colors. However, Lucy might have been loved a bit too much in the food department and needs to lose a few pounds. She was accustomed to snacking whenever hungry (free-feeding) plus the occasional handout of people food. Since those things don't happen around here (mean FM), bet she's already lost some weight just adjusting to an actual feeding schedule.

As an only dog with her own fenced yard, moving to her foster home means more adjustments for Lucy than just the dining plan. While she met my dogs nicely and with just the appropriate sniffing, I don't think she's very comfortable around them so is spending a lot of time in a crate... her safe place? She loves patting and attention and definitely has the Golden lean and head nudge mastered Smile Too bad the resident dogs don't believe in one-on-one time and barge in on our quiet time sending Lucy off to her crate. She's perfectly housetrained, not one accident in the house. However, she's not accustomed to leash walks or taking care of business on a tie-out. She's quickly learning the joys of walks and her leash manners have improved greatly already. As for figuring out the tie-out... not so much.

Lucy's initial wish list includes:

  • fenced yard unless you're committed to taking her outside on a leash until she's bonded with you & accustomed to her new surroundings
  • calm, quiet home without other dogs
  • someone with lots of time for pats & cuddles

More to come as Lucy adjusts to her new life as a foster fur-butt!

Updates

As Lucy mentioned in her last update, life's been pretty good now that she's getting out & about more! Lucy joined the resident fur-butts for another day at Woof Dah on Friday. Although it was only her second visit, she was pulling like a little tow truck to get inside, a sure sign she was happy to be there! And for a dog with a rep of not really liking other dogs, Lucy scored an invitation to a birthday party :)  Yep, sure looks like she's not having any fun, doesn't it ;)  Thanks to Kiki for letting Lucy help you celebrate!

Knowing that we'd be at today's meet & greet, Lucy got a bath and mani/pedi while at Woof Dah, she even had her nails 'pawlished' in a hot pink to match her collar!  Everyone at Petco noticed how spiffy she looked all gussied up for the occasion :)  Thanks to everyone who came out today & shared their patting skills with Lucy and the other RAGOM dogs!

I did notice that Lucy forgot to thank her sponsor for thinking of her. Without people like you, RAGOM wouldn't be able to help these shy, scared, displaced dogs turn into happy fur butts in search of new families.  Hope you can come to a meet & greet and let the dogs show their appreciation in person!

Hi RAGOM fans!  Lucy here, FM's making me sound like some sad sack of dog so thought I'd better do my own update and set the record straight.  I can't deny that when I first moved here it was pretty scary.  But I've adjusted, I even join the resident fur butts when it's time to swarm FM for our bedtime treats or a ride in the car!  It's been kinda boring around here so what did she expect?  Anyway... the canine social calendar has picked up lately so my real self has had a reason to emerge.  Besides my day at Woof Dah a couple of weeks ago (hope I go there again soon!) we've had a couple of play dates in Cindy G's fenced yard!  Boy, is that ever fun!  FM said I lit up like a little kid at Christmas Smile  While I do enjoy our walks through the neighborhood, there's nothing like the freedom to explore what I want, when I want, without being attached to some old human.  FM couldn't stop smiling seeing me sniffing and prancing and even running around!

Last weekend I got to go to two RAGOM meet & greet events.  A little scary at first but it didn't take more that a couple of new people patting on me to realize it's a great way to spend an afternoon.  Gave me the chance to prove I like everybody ~ men, women, kids, I even got to kiss an infant!   Scored lots of pats & scratches, a few treats, met some nice people and their dogs, I was one happy, tired girl!

After Sunday's event FM took me to meet my foster grandparents.  After making the rounds for more patting I surprised FM by clearing the coffee table in a single bound to land next to her on the couch for some cuddling time.

So now that I've dispelled the myth that I'm just some sad old dog, hope there's special somebody out there thinking about meeting me.  I'd even be a great starter dog, move in ready, fresh out of the box.  House trained, cat tested, love car rides & happy to nap in the back seat while you're off shopping, good staying home alone, too.  Contact your placement advisor & she'll hook you up with FM.  And if you've got a fenced yard call soonest!

Love,

Lucy

Although it's awfully early in Lucy's blog, FM already has to apologize to Lucy's fans for being a no-show at last Sunday's meet & greet. Car problems meant chauffeuring dogs around town wouldn't have been a good idea. Lucy was bummed to miss out on all the patting & FM was bummed since those events are always fun :(   With any luck Lucy will make her debut as a RAGOM dog in just a couple of weeks so watch for details on the next meet & greet.

Fortunately, Lucy's week wasn't a total bust as she had her first visit to Woof Dah for some doggy daycare! Considering how tired she's been since coming home I'd say she had a pretty good time :) I was a little worried she might try to find a corner to hide in since she can be stand-offish with other dogs, but she spent the day cruising around checking out all the new sights & smells.

Even better from Lucy's perspective was all the attention from Woof Dah's staff. She may not enjoy playing doggy games but she lives for pats & scratches, so... score! Jeffrey was impressed with how quickly she warms up to new people since he got Lucy kisses within 30 seconds of meeting her :)  My resident dogs and fosters are regulars at day care & I can't wait to see if more exposure to dogs having fun being dogs maybe allows her inner puppy to break through!

Anonymous sure was a busy elf this year :)  And Lucy and I want to thank him for welcoming her to RAGOM with the holiday donation!  With all the special dogs to choose from... it's so appreciated for the sweet seniors to be recognized.

The transition to foster dog has been a bit scarey for Lucy but she's definitely seeming more comfortable.  She's such a quiet, low maintenance girl it's challenging to update her blog.  Lucy doesn't play with dog toys (or anything else) so no fun pics of her carrying stuff around.  Bet you can't guess how excited FM was when she spotted Lucy nosing around in the toy basket :)  Lucy doesn't play with dogs and ignores or even avoids the resident fur-butts.  Bet you can't guess how happy FM was when Lucy broke through the line of dogs (in reality only 2) blocking the stairs when it was her turn for a walk :)    She does love going on our daily walks and has remembered her leash manners, doesn't even need a Gentle Leader any more.  She walks nicely without pulling.  If some smell really gets her attention just a little tug on the leash gets her going again.  She loves meeting new people & approaches them nicely to score some patting.  New dogs met on walks get a polite sniff but Lucy's more interested in the humans.

FM does have to apologize to Lucy's Golden forebears for calling her a Yellow Lab :(  Her coat color is very similar to my resident Golden.  So Golden Lab is probably a better breed mix for her.  My only excuse is that I'm so taken with Lucy's short Lab coat that I just wasn't thinking.  Granted, Goldens have that pretty feathering on their legs & under-carriage while Labs are sleeker with their short coats.  But after walking 3 dogs on the one day sloppy with sand and melting snow... Lucy's paws barely needed to be dried off while both resident dogs deserved full baths :o  I never realized the wicking power of long fur until experiencing the joy of a dog with a short coat!

Thanks again to Lucy's Anonymous elf!  And Happy New Year to all of RAGOM's fans!!
