Hi! My name is Chloe. I am a very sweet, very loving golden. I am going to the vet this week for a check-up and to be spayed. I just turned one year old – my birthday is in November.I have LOTS of energy and my favorite thing to do is play and play… and, did I mention play. I also absolutely love to take long walks around the neighborhood and smell the smells. I do a pretty good job walking on a leash but do tug and get a little crazy excited when I see another dog, person or squirrel but I’m a good walking buddy.
Before coming to my foster home, I spent most of my days in an outdoor kennel and my evenings in a crate in a garage so the world is a new and exciting place. I still sleep in my crate at night and spend about four – six hours each day in my crate while my foster parents are at work. I am not very cooperative about going into my crate buthaving a treat waiting inside for me has helped a lot. I used to spend too much time in a crate and need to learn to trust that it is not a bad place. Once I am in my crate, I will cry for a little bit but will settle down. Another one of my favorite things to do is Snuggle – with a capital “S”. I am a huge snuggler and will plop right down on your lap and soak up the love and attention. If I get too excited, a short belly rub will usually help to calm me down.

I admit I am a messy eater and sloppy drinker! I tend to dribble water out of my mouth after I get a drink and I like to grab a mouthful of food out of my dish, drop it on the floor and eat it from there. I do eat most of it though! Because I used to live in an outdoor kennel, it’s been a challenge for me to figure out where I want to go to the bathroom. My foster family has to take me on short walks around the neighborhood to get me to go to potty. But the good news is that I am going potty closer to home now than I was when I first arrived at my foster home, so I am figuring it out. I have only had one accident in the house but that was after I drank LOTS of water…it was a beautiful Thanksgiving Day and I ran and ran chasing a ball and drank lots of water and well, you get the picture. Normally, if I have to go potty, I start getting “nervous” and I may cry. But mostly I seem “nervous”. I have not figured out to go to the door yet. I also jump up on people that I want to greet. Not a run and jump sort of jump. It’s a hello, give me some love sort of jump. But, I am jumping much less frequently now than when I first arrived at my foster house. This is probably left over from being kept in an outdoor kennel and jumping up to get someone to come over and notice me and pet me.I may knock over younger kids because I just want love, love and more love. I also let my foster family clean my feet after walks now – something I really fought the first few days here.
There are no other dogs in my foster home but I seem to have done alright with the other dogs I have met over the last couple days. I have my first official doggie play date tonight so I’ll let you know how it goes!
I do bark occasionally but if I am told “no bark” once or twice, I will stop. I do not like the vacuum cleaner one bit, the washing machine is a little unnerving as is the fan my foster mom just turned on to dry an area of the carpet in the living room. Yes, I decided I needed to open bottle of cleaner on the carpet…well it was her faultfor leaving the brand new, unopened bottle by the steps to be put away (good thing it was an organic cleaner!).

Yes, I am a toddler and am always on the look-out for things you don’t want me to have! Stuffed animals, socks, a random pencil or small toys…all fair game in my eyes.
I know “come”, but do not consistently choose to listen. I sometimes respond to “sit” but still need practice. I am also working on learning “go potty”. I am really smart though and have already learned so much in the short time I’ve been with my foster family. I definitely do not like car rides. I have been on less than five car rides in my life and get very nervous being in the car. But, I’m still young and may come to enjoy a nice ride in the car. I like tobe brushed and love baths. I even had a chance to take a short dip in the lake up to my knees and oh how I wished it would have been a warm summer day. The water looked like so much fun! I like a good rawhideto chew on and have happily dismembered a few of my toys…ah, I love the sound of ripping seams.
I am a very sweet, loving little girl. I’ll update again soon!

Great news! Last Saturday Chloe meet a wonderful couple. They came and spent the morning playing with her, took her on a walk and then played some fetch with her in the backyard. It was so neat to see Chloe take an instant liking to them and we knew they were perfect for each other! 24 hours later, they adopted her. She is living in Shorewood, surrounded by nature, close to trails and only a block from the lake, which she is going to love in the summer! She has gone to work with her new dad, loves her new squeaky toy, is having a great time exploring the woods behind her new house and playing lots of fetch. She has even learned to play Frisbee!

Sweet Chloe is young and full of energy so her new, active family is just what she needed. In less than a month, she has gone from living in an outdoor kennel and sleeping in a crate in a garage at night to the sweet life of having a warm, loving place to call home and a new family to love her. Chloe’s new dad wrote after their second night together, “Now we are just ending our night with a fire, some Christmas music and a little tug-o-war. We really feel like it was meant to be and we thank you for being such a wonderful foster family!!”

Congratulations Chloe on your forever home!!

We miss you and can’t wait for a visit!

It’s been just over a week since our first update. We have gotten to know Chloe so much better. She is a very loving, very sweet little girl. She celebrated her first birthday last week and had her vet check-up. She weighs 52 pounds and is a “smaller” Golden. She was spayed on Thursday and had a bit of a rough experience but is feeling better each day. She is supposed to take it easy but the words “puppy” and “take it easy” don’t really mix so she's still sore by evening. Chloe has had a couple doggie play dates with other dogs and had a great time! We were unsure of how she felt about other dogs when she first arrived because she did not enjoy meeting a neighbor dog but we think it is just because everything was so new. We now see that she would love to play with any dog willing to play with her!

Things Chloe loves: to be brushed, snuggled, pet, loved, tons of attention, going on walks, exploring (she is very curious), chewing on rawhide bones, destroying toys, following us around so she doesn’t miss anything, playing and playing, exploring new things. She is extremely curious.

Things Chloe is learning/needs help with: deciding where to go to the bathroom (she still needs to be walked to do her duty), jumping up on people (although she will hold back when she sees our knee lifted. May be overwhelming for small/young children), commands (she came to us knowing no commands). She sometime responds to “come” but still needs lots of work with this one. The words “leave it” fall on deaf ears. She has had two accidents in the house because she has not learned how to tell us she needs to go out in a way we can easily recognize. We have to watch for signs: she gets a little nervous, paces. As mentioned in the last post, she lived in an outdoor kennel and was crated in the garage at night so she never had to learn to ask to go out. So, we think she is doing really well. But, Chloe is a smart little girl and is responding to several new phrases/words in the last two weeks she’s been with us! Our daughter worked with her, teaching her to “sit” and within ten minutes, she was listening!

She also responds to “treat” “go potty” (she will usually pee when we tell her this), and “go for a walk” She is a bundle of energy and needs enough exercise to keep her from looking for trouble. We walk her morning and evening and usually in-between because our schedules allow us to be home during the day. She loves our kids and loves/needs lots of attention. She is so happy to be living in a house and is even falling asleep in the middle of the floor now; something she was too nervous to do until recently. She is crated while we are gone but we tried a new wire crate and now she doesn’t fight to go into her kennel. The wire crate sits in front of our patio door which she also seems to enjoy. The plastic crate was too hot and too confining and she really hated it and most likely had many bad memories tied to it. She is a very sweet little girl and will give her heart to her new family.
