Brooklyn is 1.5 year old female golden/husky mix, she weighs in at 44 lbs minus a tail and is fostered in Owatonna, MN. She is tall and lean in stature, she is up to date on vaccines, she is great with kids of all ages, she does not resource guard toys, bones or food and she loves toys. She is good with the other dogs in my home, which happen to be seniors...she is a quick learner and respects their space.

Brooklyn has been a velcro dog since she came here, but the poor thing has been injured by a car 10/12/2011 and was seized from her owner in Kansas City Missouri. She has a fractured pelvis upper hind end and under pelvis and fractures in 2 places in her tail. She must have been in sooo much pain.
Report reads on 10/18/11 a week after the incident:
Severe crepitis (cracking noise) of both hips, she is very painful to manipulation (movement). Was hit by a car wed or thurs of last week, unable to walk for the first 2 days, unsure if she is able to urinate or defecate without difficulty-shelter will verify. Ideally, recommend referral to orthopedic surgeon for repair, amputate for the tail - she was ordered Tramadol (pain med).

On 11/10/11, she becomes a Ragom dog but unable to transport all the way to MN just yet. She will wait until 11/12/11 to be transported to my home in Owatonna, MN. When my husband picked her up her tail was gone, transport assumed it was already amputated, well it was, by Brooklyn herself. The initial area was bleeding and oozing so we called the local vet on call and she ordered pain medication and a antibiotic until I could get her to the vet in St Paul MN.

On 11/14/11 she was seen at the vet and is now cleared for surgery. I felt so bad leaving her, she was crying when I left. I was thinking how lonely and displaced she must feel. The next morning she was ready to be picked up. Her hind end is shaved and she has about 2 inches of tail, there are 6 sutures at the end of the tail and she was spayed. Poor girl....she is sore but so happy to see me and of course she has a large E collar. She is somewhat embarrassed of her back end - even when I just look at it she turns around....like don't pay attention to my butt, look at my beautiful face!

I got her home and I tried so hard to get her to rest in one place....I placed her in a 3 ft enclosure in the corner. I left the room and she leaped and cleared it! With the surgery she had that is a no,no. So the only solution was for me to take a nap.

Now we are 4 days post op and Brooklyn's pain is in good control, she is potty trained and cries and nudges you even if you are sleeping to be let out. She has had full run of the upstairs of my home so the cat can have some peace, she is good with him but she likes to chase him. She respects the gate on the stairway. She is a good eater and will not let you forget when feeding time is. She is very affectionate and loves to hug, she's not much of a kisser. She is very verbal, she talks, not as much barks, it's not even annoying. It's a soft hummm.....like a wild dog would do. It's more so when she thinks she is alone.

I think an ideal furever family would be active. She loves walks....I just hold the leash and she is ready to go. Probably frequent visits to a dog park or open area, she has a long stride when she walks. From what I have witnessed so far she can easily jump and leap over fences. She does well on a 12 ft tie out to do her business at my house. Kids or another furry friend would be awesome as she loves to play and she is very social. She would not be happy home alone or kenneled for long periods of time. She is not quite ready to go to a furever home right now but I am expecting her vet appointment on Wednesday 11/23 to go well and she will be ready to go. I hope she goes quickly because we are all falling for her bad!

Updates

Monday, January 16, 2012

It's hard to believe 12 days ago Brooklyn came to our house. A bit of unknown and bit of wild child. I think she was so happy to be out of boarding she just wanted to show how much by pleasing us. This girl has come so far in such a short time. Sure there were some serious tussles with resident Jax, but they became fewer and fewer. She learned what was expected of her and started to understand what Barney 11-408 and Jax were telling her. She didn't need a tail to wag to let us know she was happy, you could just tell. For being so young she has gone through so much and come through smiling. She loves her runs in the field and knows when we are going. She learned to sit and wait for her food, to take treats nicely, to not jump up on Barney, when told "be nice" to walk away from Jax and the toy he had. She was able to destuff toys, chew on bones, run up and down the stairs and romp in the back yard. Sleeping in her bed was fine until morning, then it was up on the bed and snuggles and talking til I dragged myself out of bed. Always happy and always trying to please.

Since we are heading out of town and our grandson would be coming when we returned it was decided she needed to go to a new foster. I can't tell you how heart wrenching this can be. But I was grateful it meant she wouldn't have to go to boarding. Meanwhile I kept looking at aps. Couple people were out to other fosters and some weren't interested. I had about given up when I came across David and Joe. Previous dog owners, experienced, loved the husky mix, both worked out of their home, someone was usually around......could it be they would be available, would they be interested? Well, we lucked out. David has a 22 year old cat named Emma, so what ever dog joined their family would have to be good with her. Whew, Brookie was good with the cats. We talked on the phone and on Sunday they came to meet Brooklyn. When you have fostered awhile you get to know pretty soon if things look like they are gonna be a good match or not. I was a little taken aback when Brookie was so submissive when the guys came in, but she waited and then went to them. I don't know what her past experience with men has been, but I do know it will only be the best from here on in. I think we all knew it was gonna be a love match. Sometimes what looks good on paper doesn't cut it. This time it was good on paper and in person. This morning I had a voice mail and email that said they would like to bring Brooklyn into their family. HOORAY!!! So tonight David and Joe came and got their little girl. David is experienced and believes in letting the dog know what is expected and has great follow through. Joe is a softy:) So with the usual mixed emotions I said good bye to Brooklyn and hello to two great guys that I know I'll keep in touch with. I could not have asked for a better fit for Brookie and I know she will be loved, cared for, continued to be trained and best of all I know I can visit any time:)

You know when you find a family for your foster so many people tell you what a good job you've done. But deep down I know it's really just that you lucked out and found the family that didn't know the dog was looking for them. The only thing that makes saying good bye to your foster bearable is knowing they are going where they belong and when you can, you will have room for another foster to come your way.

So Barney 11-408, Jax and the cats and I say adieu to Miss Brooklyn and we'll see you around. Thanks to David and Joe for giving her such a wonderful home and love.

A big THANK YOU to Judith C. for offering to buy me a new toy, but FM said I just would tear it up and if she'd like to do something she could donate to RAGOM.  So Judith did. RATS I say, I could've been tearing into something new!!  Then I met a nice couple named Gene (like in FD) and Judy (different Judy) and they bought me this awesome chew stick and sweet potato treat.  Get this, I had to wait til the ride home for the chew bone, and I worked on it, but I was so tired from socializing at Chuck & Don's......but I got to have it in my crate today, so that rocked. THANKS for the goodies. I sure met a lot of nice people and kids.  I guess they are like short humans huh?  Ha ha.  My friend Julie was there and she almost forgot that I am to have all 4 on the floor, as in paws don't belong on humans!!!  FM had to remind her:)  I got so much attention and FM kept handing out blueberry treats to people to give me if I sat nice and boy did I sit a lot.  So thanks to everyone who came out to see me, oh the others too, and all the attention.  I think I like these Events.

What a great smile!

Being a good girl at the event

Whadda face!

Tawney and Brooklyn at the Event

See all the great pics of me attached?  Boy FM had a hard time picking out which ones to send with my update.  Our own personal RAGOM photographer took these of me and all the other fur butts that came,( not the one of me and Tawny, FM did that with her cell phone, nice try FM).   I think she really captured me, don't ya think?  Sweet, good, a little 'tude, I mean it's all me.  So anyway, I had a good run before we drove all the way to the Cities (that's what they call going to Minneapolis/St Paul from St Cloud the boonies ya know) so I
was good on the way down.  Well, that and the fact I had a kong with frozen PB in it.  Barney 11-408 was along for the ride and he doesn't care about kongs so I was really good.  On the way home I was exhausted from all the greeting, sitting, being good, meeting Biscuit (he's kinda ADHD like me but he's learning like me too) and he is so HANDSOME.  Wouldn't mind a little play time with him, we got along just fine.  And then there was the older lady, Tawny, she barks like ahrooooo roooo.  We both sat alot for treats and were last to leave.

So Jax and me been getting along really good.  Yeah we had our tussles in the beginning and I'm still learning dog speak, but I'm really trying.  Last night we each got a piece of roast beef and we took it nicely.  FM was standing right there and Jax went to lick the floor and for some reason I musta thought it was food and I sorta went at him:(  Bad girl I know.  But FM yelled NO and intervened and boy she talked in a mean quiet voice and told me I was a naughty girl...yadda  yadda....well OK I listened and gave her I'm sorry face, but I sure didn't
get any love or treats outta that.  So anyway, I'm learning when Jax has something I'm not suppose to try and take it away.  Sometimes I forget and head his way and FM tells me NO! and I stop.  But ya know sometimes Jax can be a little grumpy and gets into trouble too:)  I mean :(     I'm also learning jumping up on people and the slider window is not a good thing, well I'm starting to get that idea anyway.  Like they say A Work In Progress, yep that's me.  I would like to play tug with Jax but he just gets snarky so I wouldn't mind if I met a dog that
would do that kinda play thing with me.  FM doesn't play tug with me cuz she says it gets to be a dominant thing with me and for now I need to learn that she is in charge.

Meanwhile I love the stuffed toys, nyla bones, old marrow bones............and I've been good about not chewing on anything but what I get from the toy basket.  I leave the cats alone, which is something I can't say for a certain resident dog.  I try to get Barney to play, and he looks interested for bout a nano second and then let's me know he doesn't want me jumping on him.  I sleep in my bed at night and in the morning I get up on the bed and cuddle with FM.  I have also learned to sleep in a bit later too.  I love my runs in the field.  Today I got out of my collar on the way to the field and had a little run around the yard, but finally came back.  FM praised me for coming, I got my collar on and off we went.  There are so many new smells every day and I love to run after Jax.  He doesn't have to have a long leash on him and someday I going to be just like him, no long leash.  FM says that when I go a certain ways ahead of her I automatically stop, look back at her and then go again.  She thinks at some  point I must have had free reign and learned to only go so far.

So anyway FM told me I should let everyone know what I would like in a furever home, so here goes:

Another dog to play with would be good, but not a real dominant one, of I could be an only child
Cats are ok
I need a crate while you are gone til I get a little older and can win my free roam
No small kids cuz I still like to jump and I'd probably try to eat anything they had in their hands. So 10 or older,  unless I'm closely supervised
I would love a fairly active family.  People who like to be outside, go for walks, hike, maybe even a runner.
I would like to go to obedience school to further my education and socialization skills
I need a family that will be consistent with me, the rules, the praise, and loving me and making me feel safe
And of course understands that a dog doesn't need a tail to wave around to show how happy she is to see you.

Look how nice my butt is looking

ooh ooh butt is almost to touch down

So, if  you meet the requirements and think I'm the one to complete your family, let your placement advisor know.

Sweet little kisses and butt wiggles

PS did I tell you I love the RAGOM life and living in a home with people?  OK just wanted to remind you

Brooklyn aka Brookie

You talk'n to me?

Sunday, January 8, 2012

My Foster Mom was telling me that I got a new token from "Anonymous", not sure who that is, but they are very generous and I can't thank them enough for helping RAGOM help out with my vetting and boarding.  Christmas has passed and yet I get such a generous gift.  If I could send you a tail wag I would, but instead you get a butt wiggle:)  And on a good day, maybe even a kiss.  Thank you so much for caring about me.  People like you and my sponsor is what helps RAGOM keep helping kidz like me.

Greetings to one  and all.  So I've been here a couple days and have decided living in a foster home rocks, not that boarding was that bad.  Jax the resident dog hasn't been real easy to win over.  He's kinda protective of his mom, Barney 11-408, the toys, food....jeesh like get over it.  Yep, we've had a few tussles and FM has had to intervene cuz neither of us want to back down.  Today was a good day, we got along all day and out in the field we just ran and smelled and had a good time.  Maybe we've reached a 'truce' of sorts.  Who knows.

I am crated in a wire crate while everyone is gone, and the first time I carried on.  Today I went right in to get my kong with the frozen PB and didn't carry on.  When FM got home tonight I was pretty good then too.  I get to sleep in the bedroom in my own doggie bed in a cool basket.  In the morning I prefer to get up about 6:00 a.m. and FM and Jax aren't morning people, so we go out and potty and then go back to bed for awhile.  Last night Barney joined us in the bedroom, a first for him.

I am eating about 2 cups of food each feeding, which is a.m. and p.m.  Today while in the field on a leash and about a 50' rope, FM would call me back and if I came with out her having to reel me in I got a blueberry treat.  I love my treats!!!  So I am figuring out that coming when called can be a really good thing.

I still get excited and jump up on my people but am finding out that's not a good thing.  Also, grabbing FM's shirt sleeve gets me a firm NO!!  Yeah I know with a basket full of toys leave the people clothes alone.  Give me time.

I do pull on the leash when we head out, but FM said something about a gentle leader would probably help with that issue.  She also decided the clicking of my nails on the floor was enough and she cut my nails.  I sat very nicely and let her do her job.  I got a great treat after that.  Gotta remember those blue berry, puparoni and doggie biscuits are pretty darn good.

So since some people think St Cloud is the boondocks, I told FM we gotta go to the big RAGOM event in Bloominton at Chuck & Don's Sunday.
So if you wanna meet me and maybe even think I could be a member of your family, come see me.  Barney 11-408 is coming too, but he's an old guy and I'm young and beautiful and well you get the picture.  I'll be there from about 1:30 to 3:00 (if FM doesn't get lost getting there:)

Meanwhile, if you can't make the meet n greet, but would like to know about me, contact your placement advisor and we'll give you a call.

OK nap time.

Hi everyone, just wanted to let you know I've moved from boarding to a foster home in St Cloud, where Barney 11-408 and resident Jax live.  I just arrived tonight so give me a couple days to settle in and I'll let ya know how I like it.

Hey, in case you would like to meet me I'll be at Chuck & Don's in Bloomington this Sunday 1/8/12 with Barney from 1:30 to 3:00.  Totally awesome huh?  OK gotta go finish checking out the rest of the house.

Stay tuned for my updates!!

I'd say tail wags, but don't have a tail, so will send butt wiggles instead.

Brooklyn's 1st Ragom event, Got to meet so many new people and furbutts, Thanks to all who came to Welcome Her to the family.

Thursday, December 1, 2011

Ms Brooklyn had her follow up vet appointment today, she is heartworm negative. Her spay incision looks good, her stitches removed from her tail, she is microchipped and she can now move on as a healthy Ragom dog with normal activity.

So with that, my fosters Honey and Brooklyn love to rough play in the back yard and she takes great care in showing my newest foster Ruby how to be a house dog. Brooklyn is a confident and happy pup.

We are working on putting on a couple pounds and she has no trouble with that, she is very treat enthused and has learned sit and lay down. Brooklyn and Honey 01-240 sharing sweet potatoes - what good girls!
