Please help me welcome Biscuit to the RAGOM family. Biscuit or as I like to call him "Mr. Legs" is a 13 month old pure bred male Golden Retriever. He is a beautiful red haired boy and is long and lanky. He is current on all vaccinations and is neutered. Biscuit is a very sweet, handsome boy and is a very high energy guy who gets along great with all the dogs at my house. He and Raven, my 2 year old adopted RAGOM boy play for hours and will wrestle until I put a stop to their play time. He is respectful of the older dogs at my house and does listen to them when they say enough is enough. Biscuit does not display any resource guarding with toys or food and is crate trained. He is housebroken and has not had any accidents at my house. He walks fine on a leash with a Gentle Leader....I've not tried him with just a flat collar. He is a smart boy and does want to please his humans. This is the good stuff about Biscuit. Please read on......

Before you rush to call your placement adviser for this handsome boy, you need to know that Biscuit needs a lot of work and a very experienced owner. His new forever family can not have children under the age of 15....preferably an adult only home unless the teenagers are very dog savvy. Biscuit will need an owner who loves and wants to train a dog.....not someone who will take him to an 8 week course and expect to be done training him. He will need on going training to help him over come his lack of socialization and to form a bond with his humans. He will need an owner who is able to provide tons of consistent exercise, a runner would be great or a family with another energetic dog and a fenced yard so he can run off some of his energy. Mr Biscuit spent the first 8 months or so of his life tied to a tree with minimal human contact. He was then surrendered to an all breed rescue group where he spent a month or so in foster care before being adopted out to a family. Unfortunately this family could not deal with Biscuit's behaviors and his original rescue group did not have an open foster home with enough experience to help Biscuit so he became a RAGOM dog. He was in a foster home when he first arrived at RAGOM but was too much for the other dogs in the household and so he spent 16 days in boarding. He has been at my house for 5 days. He is a handful and a challenge.

Biscuit is very much like a 8 or 10 week old puppy in his behaviors but in an adult dog body. He has zero manners. He has not learned that all four of his feet need to remain on the ground and that mouthing and humping people is not acceptable. He does mouth hard enough to cause bruises but has not broken skin. He counter surfs and chews everything he can get his mouth on. So far we've lost one harness to him....forgot to take it off when I put him in his crate and when I went to remove it a couple minutes later it was in 6 pieces!! He has also broken a lamp when he tried to jump onto the entertainment center to grab my hat. He loves to grab anything and everything and will run around with said items wanting you to chase him. Needless to say, Biscuit is kept on leash and tethered to me or crated when he is in the house. He is like a tornado when left loose in the house if he is off leash. I use a Gentle Leader and or an Easy Walk harness with Biscuit and that seems to help calm him down, or at least I have control over him. Biscuit does appear to have some irritation or damage to his trachea area which I suspect is a result of his being tied or restrained with a collar. I only notice it when pressure is put on his neck or upper chest and then he will produce a raspy cough. It does not appear to bother him at all. This does seem to have improved since he has been with me and I am using his flat collar only for his identification tags.

Biscuit needs his next home to be his forever home. By my count this 13 month old boy has been in 7 different homes already so he needs stability and someone who is 100% committed to his care who will work with him and help him so he can become the wonderful Golden we know he can be. I do see potential in Biscuit and I do know that some of his behaviors are just that of a young dog who needs time to grow up and mature. His behaviors are worse when he is excited or stressed. It is almost like he looses the ability to control himself and focus when he gets excited or over stimulated. His new owner will need a ton of patience and will need to employ positive training methods. Biscuit does not need someone to dominate him or teach him who is boss. He needs someone who can train him and teach him what is expected and required of a family dog. He will be a work in progress and I do expect it to take months of work to train him.

If you think you have the patience and skills needed to help Biscuit grow and flourish please contact your placement adviser. He is a diamond in the rough and will be worth the work you will need to put into him.

Hi RAGOM!

It's me, Harmon (fka Biscuit 11-373), checking in from my forever home. It's been just over a month since I was adopted and I have some great news to share! Let me tell you a little about my forever home before I share the big news. It's kind of nice being the only dog around here because I get all the attention and love from the B family and they take me on walks, runs, and hikes. Guess what? I'm already trained for my first 5K9 that's coming up in May! This summer I'll be heading to the St. Croix river for canoeing and swimming. Don't worry, I'll be riding duff -- it's the good life for me! Now that I've had some time to bond with my humans, I've calmed down a lot and am minding my manners because two humans always have their eyes on me. That's right, I'm a changed dog! I still love to check out the counter once in a while and steal hats and mittens if I can, but that's it. A boy has to have some fun, right? Since there aren't any other dogs here, I need my dog time, so I go to free play doggie daycare once a week while my humans are at work and/or school. I really loved living with my foster siblings, Rocco, Raven, and Jimmie, but I do best on my own with a little play time each week. Boy, is that tiring! It's so much fun, but all I want to do when I get home is sleep. Now for the big news -- I'm in training to be a therapy dog! I started obedience classes and just graduated from Level 1. Guess what happened in my first week of Level 2? The instructor said I should test out because I'm such a smart boy and already have the skills for Level 3. By the time you read this update, I'll probably already be in Level 3! That's it for now, I'll send another update soon! A big thanks to my foster mom, Denise, for all the patience she had with me and for putting so much effort into getting me ready for my forever home. Hi to Rocco, Raven, and Jimmie too! Finally, a big thanks to all my fans and supporters, especially those who believed in me. Woof! Your pal,Harmon
P.S. Attached are a few photos. The first is me with my diploma from Level 1 training and the second is me just after a 3 mile run!

My jacket, hat and gloves are on the kitchen chair, my shoes are in the entry way, a loaf of bread is on the kitchen counter and the toilet paper is back on the toilet paper holder.  My dogs are sleeping, there is enough room for me to sleep in my own bed and my house is very quiet.  Yes, Biscuit has been adopted and is now living with his new family!! Biscuit met a wonderful young couple who had read about him and thought their active lifestyle and dog experience would be a good match for Biscuit.  I knew it was a good match when they both came armed with high value treats and a wooden IQ toy to test Biscuit's intelligence.  Biscuit true to form, jumped on, barked at and mouthed the arms of his visitors.  All behaviors I wanted them to see first hand so they knew what they were going to have to deal with.  They also got to see the sweet, smart, happy Biscuit who snuggled and played with his new friends.  After spending more time with Biscuit the next day, we all agreed it would be a good fit.

First reports are good, so far Biscuit is doing fine.  His new owners have already attended the orientation for obedience classes, which Biscuit will start next week. They've already taught him to "leave it" and are planing to train him to run in 5k's or maybe even half marathons.  He picked out a favorite toy at the pet store (a long legged moose) and he's reported to have a great nose, having found a bag of jerky that was forgotten in the back of a closet.  His forever family will find ways to put his talents to use, maybe search and rescue or agility, the possibilities for Biscuit are endless thanks to a wonderful forever family.  I could not have asked for more in a family for him.

Biscuit came to me a troubled young dog who had experienced many homes in his young life.  He had no manners and we questioned if he was even adoptable.  After 3 months of consistent care, patience, love and understanding, Biscuit is now with a forever family who will help him grow to be the great dog he was intended to be.  I am honored to have been Biscuit's "bridge" to his forever life. He was a challenge to foster but so very rewarding as well.  A special thanks to Biscuit's friends Jen, Jim, Jayden and Maggie.  My dogs and I will miss the sweet, wild boy, have a great life Biscie.

Enjoy the photos of Biscuit when I tried to take a picture with his new family.....they pretty much tell the story of Biscie.

Hi everyone, it's me Biscuit inviting you all to stop out and meet me this Saturday at the Brooklyn Park PetCo. I'll be the very handsome, long legged Golden who is looking for his forever home. I'm still doing great at my foster house but foster mom says it is time for me to find my own family so I can settle in and bond with my new family. Foster mom says we need to work on my counter surfing but other than that, I'm behaving pretty well. I do get excited when someone new comes to the house and I like to jump up to say hi, so we'll work on that too.

I'm attaching a couple of photos of me.....I know you probably don't believe me when I say I'm sending in my own updates, so foster mom took a photo of me when I was working on the computer. She also took a photo of me when I was sleeping on the couch.....computer work is so tiring. (sorry for the poor quality, she used her cell phone for the photos).

See you all on Saturday. Your pal, Biscuit.

Hey everyone, it's me Biscuit checking in with all my fans.  Let me tell you about my busy week.  I had a sleep over at my friend Jen and Jim's house with their girls Maggie and Jayden.  Boy did I have fun playing with my girl friends!!  Maggie and I did a lot of snuggling too. They also have a cat at their house, Poco, and I am fine with him.  I just look at him and can't quite figure out what he is but I don't try to chase him or hurt him so foster mom says I can live with cats.  Thanks Jen and Jim for letting me hang out at your house so foster mom could help search for Kekoa without having to leave me in a crate for the entire day.

This weekend I got to go to a RAGOM meet and greet event and got to meet and greet lots of nice people. I did fine with everyone I met, even an infant.  Everyone is always so surprised to see how well I behave when I go to these events.  They always ask my foster mom "is this Biscuit"?  Seems everyone expects me to be out of control and jumping on everyone.  Well, that might have been the old Biscuit but the new improved Biscuit does not jump on people or mouth them!!  Ok, once in a while if I am really, really happy to see you (like when foster mom picked me up on Saturday morning) I still try to jump up but I stop when you either ignore me or tell me to stop. I do not mouth people any more....I've learned that is not appropriate behavior.  I'm sending a couple of photos of me from a RAGOM meet and greet that was a couple of weeks ago.  Foster mom forgot about these cute photos, how could she do that??

Well, all for now, got to go play in the fresh new snow with Rocco, Raven and Snowy.....Jimmie is sleeping so she's not playing in the snow with us.

Your pal, Biscuit.

Biscuit continues to make great progress in foster care.  His jumping and mouthing are a thing of the past.  He is much calmer in the house and does not need to be crated unless I am away from home.  Biscuit is 100% housebroken and reliably rings a bell on the back door when he needs to go outside.  He has even woken me up early (3:30 am) by ringing the bell to go outside when he had an upset stomach.  He is a very smart boy and does listen well.  He does come when called and is starting to understand "leave it" and "drop it".....great commands for when he picks up something that he should not have.

He is still very much a puppy and loves to play games.  Biscuit eats part of his meals from a busy bottle, which helps to slow down his eating and makes him work for some of his food.  He also loves toys that challenge him, such as toys that have removable pieces or toys that dispense treats.  We continue to work on relaxation exercises for 20 - 30 minutes each day.  I did give Biscuit and myself a break for a few days so I could see how he did without his daily training and he was fine, really did not see any regression.  I do continue to work with him as I feel he needs the daily mental stimulation and exercise.  Plus the one on one time is important for him since there are 4 other dogs here.  Please contact your placement adviser if Biscuit sounds like a good fit for your life.

Hi everyone, it's me Biscuit checking in to see what everyone is up to on this nice winter day.   I sure am enjoying this warm winter weather and am keeping busy playing outside with my foster brothers and sisters.  I do like the snow too so I'm happy to play no matter what the temperature.  I'm still doing really well at my foster house and we keep working on my behaviors.  Foster mom and I went to Chuck and Don's for a foster showcase and I did really well.  Lots of people had heard about me and they were all very surprised to see how well I behaved and what I good boy I am.  I met other dogs both young and old without any issue and met people of all sizes and ages too without issue.  One of our super nice volunteers (thank you Devon) stopped by and took some really good photos of me.  Everyone says I am very handsome, what do you think?  Here's what my foster mom says I need in my forever home.....is that with you??

*  No children under the age of 15, preferably an adult only home so I can have consistent training and care.

*  My new family must want to attend multiple levels of obedience classes so we can bond and I can learn.  I am very smart and very food motivated.  Positive motivation training for me!!

*  A family that likes to play games, laugh and is active.  I LOVE games and need regular exercise.  And I do lots of things that will make you laugh or could make you angry.....I need to live with the people who laugh.

*  I can live with or without another dog.  If I live with another dog, they must like to play and wrestle a lot, and I play hard so they can't get upset by that.

*  I would like a yard with a fence but if you are active enough and promise to take me to places where I can run and play off leash everyday, I might be ok without a fence.

*  A FOREVER family that will love me and commit to me no matter what.  I've had too many homes already so my next family has to be my last family.  I may never be a perfect dog so my new family must be willing to adjust to ME and I promise to do my best to adjust too.

*  Love, love, love and more love.  I am a big snuggler and love my people.  Foster mom says she thinks I am making up for some of what I missed out on when I was a puppy.  I'm not saying but she might be right.

Please contact your placement adviser if you think you might be my forever home.

Your pal, Biscuit

Hey everyone, it's me Biscuit sending you holiday greetings from my foster home.  I'm doing great here and had a really nice Christmas.  I got new toys, things to chew on and a new fleece blanket.  I also got to have a special Christmas dinner (thanks to some friends) and had lots of treats thanks to RAGOM and other friends.  I really like the Elk antlers and anything I can eat or rip up.  I also love the hide and seek toys that foster mom has.....a bunch of small squeakie toys like eggs are inside a bigger toy and I find them and pull them out from inside the big toy.  It's like pulling out the stuffing only foster mom can put it back in and it does not make a mess!!

I'm sure everyone is wondering how my behavior is.  Well, I think I am doing pretty good.  I attended another meet and greet last week and I did just fine meeting lots of people and dogs.  I did not jump on anyone, did not bark and did not mouth anyone.  I walked around the store with other fosters while foster mom took Snowy 11-289 to get her toe nails trimmed and I did just fine....was a little worried about where foster mom was going but she came back so all was good.  I've gotten into a couple of scuffles with Rocco....over treats and food but now we've worked things out and play all the time again.  I've not jumped on or mouthed foster mom for more than 3 weeks now so I think I'm doing really good!!!  Oh, foster mom wants to say something.....Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!  Your pal Biscuit.

Foster mom here:  Just an update on Biscuit's behavior.  He is doing great with his mouthing and jumping on people...none in 3 weeks or so.  He does like to tease my older lab trying to get her to play and that can turn into him barking at her until she growls to tell him to stop.  He does understand that but does not listen to her 100% of the time and I occasionally have to tell him to stop or use a time out.  His behaviors have improved tremendously however he is still a 14 month old puppy. He reminded me of that a couple of days before Christmas.  I was busy in the kitchen making home made dog treats and realized Biscuit was "too quiet" in the living room.  He was happily chewing on a dog toy when I checked on him the first time, 2nd time he was happily chewing on a permanent green marker.  As soon as I said "oh, no, Biscuit, what do you have", he ran off with the marker in his mouth, tracking green foot prints through my house......up stairs, down stairs and through multiple rooms.  He finally dropped the marker and I managed to usher him outside.  At least he tried to be festive using a green marker!!  Biscuit is a typical puppy and his forever family will need to be diligent about puppy proofing their home.   We do have a Christmas tree in the house.....it is a smaller tree and is on top of a table.  At this point we work on his relaxation exercises for 20 - 30 minutes per day and utilize other opportunities to practice his obedience skills.  Biscuit is a very smart boy who responds well to direction and commands, he just likes to test to see if perhaps today the rules have changed.  He will need an owner who loves to play games and has a good sense of humor as well as lots of patience.  Everything is a game to Biscuit and if you can remember that, he really is an easy and enjoyable dog to share your life with.  He does love to snuggle and loves his humans. Please contact your placement adviser if Biscuit sounds like a match for you.

woof, Woof, WOOF!!! From Jayden and Maggie, woof, Woof, WOOF!!!

Monday, December 5, 2011

Hi Biscuit fans, I just wanted to let everyone know how great Biscuit did yesterday at the RAGOM meet and greet event at PetCo.  He behaved even better than I could have hoped for.  He did not bark, jump up or try to mouth anyone.  He met all humans and canines without a single issue and really seemed relaxed and calm. Needless to say we were able to stay for the entire event.  Good job Mr Biscuit!!

Biscuit has mastered the sit and down (as in lay down) command and showed everyone how well he could listen.  One of our very experienced fosters who is also on our behavioral evaluation team had met Biscuit when he first arrived at my house so she had seen first hand what a wild, out of control boy he was.  She was so surprised to see the enormous change in his behaviors and said he didn't seem like the same dog.  She said she would never have guessed he has behavioral issues.  I've only been working with Biscuit for less than three weeks and I have to say he has shown himself to be a very smart boy and well worth the extra work.  He is very sweet and really wants to learn and please his people.  It is very rewarding to see his changes and to know that I have helped him to grow so he can find his forever family.  Just today he mastered the "kennel up" command and will go into his crate without a bribe or help.  We are now working on give a paw and roll over.  I think he loves to learn!!

I am so pleased with Biscuit's progress and am very optimistic for his future.  Could that future be with you?  Please contact your placement adviser if Biscuit sounds like a good fit for your household.

Thursday, December 1, 2011

Hello everyone, it's me Biscuit.  Guess what, I'm doing my own update today.  Foster mom says I've made significant progress since coming to her house and she is trusting me to use her computer today!!   Wow, isn't that great news!!  Don't worry she's not far away as she is watching me to make sure I do not try to chew on the computer or mouse. I think I can figure out this computer thing as I am a very smart boy.

I'm including a couple of photos of me so you can see that I am being a good boy.  Please look closely at the photo of me sleeping on the couch. Did you notice that I am not attached to a leash, harness or gentle leader?  Yes, that is because I have calmed down and can now be trusted to be loose in the house. How great is that!! I've stopped being a tornado in the house and am now pretty calm....well as calm as a 13 month old puppy can be.  Yes, I'm still a big puppy so I'm not perfect....we are working on my counter surfing and my desire to take anything that I can find.  Hey, I'm really talented as last night I climbed up on a dinning room chair and pulled a hanging thing off the wall....that did not make foster mom too happy but lucky for me no damage was done and now that is moved so I can not get to it.  At least I don't climb on the bathroom counter to look out the window like some other dog here at my foster home....yes, Rocco, you are busted for that.

My other big news is that I no longer have to sleep in my crate at night.  That's right, now I am sleeping in bed with my 4 foster brothers and sisters and mom.  Foster mom says 5 big dogs in a queen size bed does not leave much room for her but I am so happy to be able to snuggle with her and the other dogs at night.  I think she is happy that I don't have to be crated at night and I know I sure am.  The only time I have to be in my crate is for meals and when she is gone from the house.  I eat in the crate because Jimmie has some resource guarding issues and also because foster mom wants to make sure I understand that the crate is a good place.  I do not have any resource guarding issues at all.  I'm fine with sharing toys, treats and food with everyone.  Foster mom says that is a very good thing.  She does not trust me with free roam of the house when she is gone because she thinks we will play and get into trouble....doesn't want to come home to broken things or an injured dog in case we get out of control.  It's ok, as I am good and just nap in the crate anyway.

I no longer have to use my crate for time outs.  Now if I need a time out foster mom just makes me sit for 15 - 30 seconds away from what ever was getting me riled up....usually it's for barking at Jimmie cause I want her to play with me but she does not play with foster dogs....I keep trying but she's not giving in.  I love to play with all the dogs.  Raven and I wrestle really hard and I love to run with Rocco and play chase with Raven, Rocco and Snowy.  Snowy 11-289 likes to wrestle with me too and I know I can not play as rough with her as I do with Raven 11-173 and Rocco.

Foster mom and I work at least 2 or 3 times a day on what she calls my "relaxation exercises".  I like my alone time with her and really like the special treats she gives me when we do our work.  I also do some relaxation exercises with a tennis ball and that is fun too.  Foster mom says we are trying to teach me to relax and be calm....she thinks it has helped and that I can focus for more than one nano second now.  She says she is very happy with my progress.

I think I surprised foster mom with how smart I am by showing her that I know how to ring the bell on the back door when I need to go outside to go potty.  I have not had a single accident in the house so she says I am completely house broken.  I am doing much better with not jumping on people and not mouthing people.  She says I am not perfect yet and maybe I will never be, but I am so much better.  I'd like to thank my friends Jen, Jim, Maggie and Jayden for helping me too. Foster mom says sometimes it takes a village to raise us pups so I have lots of helpers cause I needed a lot of work.  They have helped me learn to calm down and bought me food, treats and toys.  They like me a lot and are very good to me.

My last good news is that I will be at the RAGOM meet and greet on Saturday the 3rd of December in Coon Rapids.  Please come and meet me.  I'll be the handsome, red Golden Retriever with the long legs.  Foster mom says we will stay as long as I behave....if not we will go home.

All for now, time to run and wrestle with the boys.  Your new and improved friend Biscuit.
