Please extend a warm welcome back into RAGOM to Mr. Buddy! Buddy was lovingly surrendered back to RAGOM after his family went through some changes, and, for the most part, he's adjusted into his foster home quite well! Buddy is a big boy who weighs in at a "vet-approved" 87 lbs; he is also neutered and up-to-date on his shots.

Original Bio...

We are honored to open our home to Buddy, a very handsome 2 year old purebred Golden Retriever. Buddy was a much loved member of a military family of five who had to move overseas and couldn't take Buddy with them. We thank Buddy's family for allowing us the privilege of helping Buddy find a new home. We also want to thank a very special RAGOM foster for allowing Buddy to stay at her place for a couple of days until he could move on to our home near Mankato, MN. Thank you Auntie Kris!

The first thing you'll notice when you meet Buddy is he's GORGEOUS! He's tall (he can see right over the kitchen table!), blonde, has beautiful feathering, a thick silky coat, and expressive deep brown eyes that are guaranteed to melt your heart. He weighed in at the vet at 77#, a good weight for his tall frame. Other than an ear infection and some itchy feet, he was given a clean bill of health. He's on meds for his ears and we'll have those rechecked in two weeks. We've switched Buddy to a grain free diet and we're hoping high quality food along with a hard freeze will take care of the itchy feet. In the meantime the vet recommended Benadryl to keep him comfortable.

In addition to being gorgeous Buddy has been such a pleasant foster! He's very low maintenance and has fit into our routine with hardly a ripple. Buddy loves to go for walks and walks nicely with a Gentle Leader. He definitely likes to be with his people, he follows us from room to room. When we are working around the house he's content to lay near by and watch us, unlike young resident Josie who always manages to find her way into trouble. If we're watching TV he likes to lay under our feet or join us on the couch for some snuggles. He understands how to use the Golden nudge under an elbow for some pets. He sleeps quietly through the night on a dog bed in our bedroom and is gated in our kitchen/laundry with Bailey for our 9 hour work day. He is housebroken and hasn't had a single accident. His recall is awesome. He takes treats very gently. He likes playing in the lake. Buddy loves to be brushed and doesn't mind when I brush his beautiful tail.

Buddy plays nicely with young resident dog Josie and is respectful to elder resident dog Bailey. Buddy is interested in playing with the cat but is not aggressive towards her. For some reason the resident cat has taken to taunting Buddy. The cat will stroll right by Buddy's nose and Buddy takes this as an invitation to play. Buddy play bows to her, which the cat ignores. Buddy then does a puppy bounce behind her, which the cat ignores. The cat then plops herself in the middle of of Buddy's dog bed. Buddy will lay next to the dog bed and whine, and the cat plays the "I can't hear or see you" game. Buddy then gives up and moves to another place on the floor. Bad cat and good Buddy!!

As wonderful as Buddy is, he does have some rough edges we're working on. When he gets excited he'll jump and get mouthy. This seems to happen when we get out his leash. The good news is he's quickly catching on that jumping and mouthing get him nothing but a turned back and ignored. He's learning that he has to sit nicely before he'll get to put on his leash or get any attention from us. He's also been caught with his feet on the counter, but a simple "Buddy off" gets him back to four feet on the floor. We don't keep any food on our counters but my guess is he'd help himself if given the opportunity!

Buddy also has some fear when meeting some new people, but not all new people. He exhibits his fear by barking and/or growling. We were aware of this when he arrived at our house so have been very careful when introducing him to new people. Buddy met FM and FD without a problem. We are empty nesters and live in a rural area so we're easily able to manage introductions to new people. For the life of us we haven't been able to figure out a pattern to his fear. With some people he's fine, with others he's not. The good news is he's never shown aggression towards anyone and if given a little time and space he recovers quickly and has warmed up to everyone he's met.

Due to his rough edges, Buddy's forever home should have no small children. His new family must be committed to taking him to at least a couple of levels of obedience classes. He will need to go to a home who will manage situations where he will meet new people. This means that each and every introduction to someone new has to be done carefully and with supervision. We're very hopeful that with time, patience, training, and love Buddy will realize he has nothing to fear and this behavior will diminish or even be eliminated.

Please contact your placement advisor if you would like to learn more about Buddy.

Buddy met a wonderful family last night, and will be joining them next weekend. He will have a mom, dad, and fur brother Riley to play with and keep him busy.

He is going to stay with us for the next week and we will enjoy our time together until he goes home to his forever family!

We have some updates on Mr. Buddy for his followers and admirers! On Sunday, Buddy was really rubbing his ears and shaking his head very frequently, so we headed to the vet on Monday and determined he has ear infections in both ears--likely caused by his allergies. As any allergy sufferers are aware, the allergens have been awful this season, so even though we've been treating Buddy's allergies with medicine, he does have an ear infection. We are treating it now and he seems so much more comfortable. We have also begun wiping his paws every time he comes in from outside to try to alleviate his allergy inflammation in his paws.

One other thing about Buddy that I'd like to reiterate...although he isn't a flight risk and doesn't require a fence, he probably can't be left out on a tie out due to his strength and desire to meet dogs and squirrels. He would probably pull it out of the ground. He is probably the kind of dog who will need to be taken out on a leash until he can have obedience training to help him understand boundaries and to help him control his desire to meet the dogs and other critters who go by. He just wants to play with them, but since he's so strong, he would probably pull the tie out out of the ground.

Do you remember how I told you that Buddy was nervous around Foster Dad in the beginning? Well, they have become absolutely BEST pals now. Buddy is so excited to see FD, and though we don't allow jumping up, I had to snap a picture of this because I wanted to show you all just how far Buddy has come. He is a dog that will require some training and consistency, but he is a diamond in the rough and he really is an incredible dog with so much potential.

Hello! Time for an update on Mr. Buddy. We met some kids and dogs this weekend, and thought we would send in an update. From what we saw, Buddy needs his space when he first meets people, but he's not aggressive or anything...he does bark a little bit, at both adults and kids, but that subsides pretty quickly (3-4 minutes), and he's so happy and content after about 2-3 days.

I'd say the big thing to take into consideration is that Buddy needs time to approach and meet people, without them all up in his face right away.  The child he met this weekend was 4, and she's pretty dog-savvy, so when I told her that she needed to give him space before petting him, she listened, then she sat on the ground and let him approach her and he was totally fine...wasn't quite up to letting her pet him yet, but I know that he would have been completely okay with that after a day or two. We would still recommend children ages 5 and up, but will gladly talk to families with younger children if you feel as though it might be a good fit.

In terms of dog-dog interaction, we've discovered that Buddy is pretty happy-go-lucky with most dogs. Just gets a little snarky with ones who make the first "move" (if you know what I mean). We've never witnessed him be the "instigator" and he plays well with other dogs for the most part. We're still working on his STRONG desire to meet other dogs when on walks, and this is probably his biggest "issue", as he pulls very strongly toward them--obedience training would do him wonders. He just wants to meet them, and we are working on teaching him how to ask appropriately.

Buddy is a truly wonderful dog. We put our hammock up this weekend, and he and I lounged in it for about an hour, just relaxing. If you think he's the dog you're looking for, please contact your placement adviser.

Hello to Buddy's followers! I have some Buddy updates for you all. First, Buddy is extremely happy to report that he's fully adjusted and acclimated to his foster home. His tail is always wagging, he's always ready for pets and cuddles, and if you say the work "walk" in his presence, he literally jumps with joy.  He's a wonderful boy to have here, and we are so grateful we are his fosters! Now, speaking of walks, Buddy is still working on his strong desire to meet new dogs when on leash. He, once again, isn't aggressive, but since he's a big boy, his barking can be intimidating to others who are walking their dogs.  The Gentle Leader is helping him greatly, but this is something his forever family will need to ensure they work on with him. He has already made a great deal of progress, but it is a marathon, not a sprint :-). Obedience training would do wonders for him.

We are going to do some more kid-testing this week, since Buddy has a couple inquiries from families with children.  I would like to see how he interacts with children under the age of five as well, so stay tuned for some updates there within the next week or two. We also plan to have Buddy meet more dogs (primarily male) this week and this weekend, so we can determine how he interacts with them now that he's more comfortable in our home. Buddy and Sadie, our young resident, get along very well; therefore, we know he can live peaceably and happily with another dog, it just may take them a little while to feel things out. Buddy does not need a fence, as he is not a flight risk. However, due to his strong desire to meet every dog he sees, and his large size, a tie out may not suffice. He may need to be taken out on a leash for quite some time so someone is out there with him at all times to help control his dog-dog interaction.

The last thing that any potential forever family will need to be aware of with Buddy is that, though he is now completely comfortable in our home, he does take a little while to warm up to strangers. He does bark when people come to the door, but he is not aggressive, and he is not growly. He just needs a little bit of time, but after a little warm-up time, he's a wonderfully typical "Velcro" Golden.

Buddy is an amazing foster. He's a big, beautiful boy with so much potential. We love having him here, and we would be glad to answer any questions you might have if you are interested in meeting him. If that is the case, please contact your placement adviser!

Just another quick update on Mr. Buddy! He continues to blossom here at his foster home, and he has completely warmed up to Foster Dad. Buddy absolutely loves to be groomed. He will let you brush him for hours; it's therapeutic for both him and for us :-).  He also enjoys baths, and we think this might help with his allergies as well. We included a couple of pictures of him with Foster Dad so you can see just how much he's warmed up to him. We are so proud of Buddy, as it's only taken him a week to feel so comfortable in our home!  Also, we'd like to provide a quick update about his walks--we tried the Gentle Leader, he walks so much better with that. I can easily walk he and Sadie without issue. He still barks at other dogs on walks, but not aggressively. He just wants to go meet them and say hello, so we are working on training him the appropriate way to approach a dog when on a leash. He's doing well, and the Gentle Leader helps tremendously. Obedience classes would be great for him as well, and for his forever family, since he bonds with people so well. It's obvious Buddy was very well-loved in his previous home, and we continue to shower him with affection, since he deserves nothing less :-).

He's such an incredible dog, and we love him tremendously! If you're interested in meeting Buddy, please contact your placement adviser!

The only health concern that Buddy has is that he does have some allergies; he's currently given Benadryl on a daily basis due to the fact that his paws become itchy and swollen.

Buddy currently resides in our home in central Iowa with our 2-year-old female Golden Retriever, Sadie. He met and gets along with Sadie very well. He's met a few other dogs over the course of this week, and we've noticed that Buddy meets and interacts with female dogs quite well, but he's pretty cautious and nervous around other male dogs.  With training, time, and patience this could subside, but it is something to be aware of for now. He also hasn't shown much resource guarding with our resident, but there have been a couple of times in which Sadie wanted a toy that Buddy had, and he told her to "mind her own business".  He has never, though, shown any resource guarding with his food around Sadie or us, and he hasn't shown any resource guarding of any kind (food, treats, toys, etc) around Foster Mom or Dad at all. Buddy got along with the cat he met, and we feel as though, since he is a very big boy who doesn't know his own strength, children 5 and up would be best.

Buddy is pretty shy when meeting new people, but he warmed up to Foster Mom very quickly.  He's been a little more cautious of Foster Dad, but he will sit next to him and allow him to pet him.  He hasn't shown any growling behavior when meeting new people, he's just a little shy and cautious.  He pulls a bit when he's on the leash, and we are going to try a Gentle Leader or Easy-Walk Harness in the near future.  He loves walks SO much, but he does like to bark at other dogs when we are walking, so we are working on that. Sadie is a great role model, so we are hoping he will learn from her as well.

Lastly, the most lovable quality about Buddy is that he has the Golden "nudge" down to a science. He is such a good cuddler, and would do anything for your attention and your pets.  We feel as though, while he resides with Sadie nicely, he would love to be the only dog in the house, so he doesn't have to share any of his attention or pets :-).  Please talk to your placement advisor if you're interested in meeting Buddy!

Buddy arrived at his new foster home in Cedar Rapids, IA, on 10/23/11. He has been an excellent house guest! Buddy was "foster-forwarded" by his former foster due to concerns about his unpredictable growling behaviors when meeting some people, but not others. On the surface, it appears to be a need for more socialization and for more opportunities for the same. It may also be from fear, but he has none when it comes to playtime with his foster brother! Buddy has continued his growling-when-meeting while meeting neighbors and his new vet. His primary fear seems to be that of unknown persons. We will continue to work on re-conditioning this behavior and keep you advised through this RAGOM website. He also has a paw/nail allergy of sorts, spending time licking and biting at them. His med dosage has been increased while we seek to find the proper amount. There may also be a period of discovery once the snow covers the ground.

Enough of the negative news. Buddy has plenty of good news about him. First off, he is one very handsome lad with a tail that is almost the equivalent of a proud peacock fanning his feathers. Buddy has done very well with our dogs and others in the neighborhood, except for a couple little snarky ones who made the first move. He is curious about our cats, but the cats have also instructed him to leave them alone if they were not in the mood. He honors their wishes. (What dog wouldn't?) While he loves to play outside with our 3-year old golden, he also enjoys his peace and quiet time in the house, dozing off on the floor for a nap. He has free roam of the house and sleeps quietly wherever he may settle in for the evening. Buddy is totally trustworthy to do his "jobs" outside.

Buddy loves to be with you at all times, almost to a fault. If you leave his sight, it will not be long before you hear him whine, wondering where you are. He is an excellent car rider, sitting nicely and enjoying sticking his nose out of a mostly-closed window. Buddy can roam a fair distance in a short time, but his recall is good. No observed difficulties in dealing with loud noises near him, such as lawn mowers or leaf blowers.
