Bree 11-315

Profile

I'd like to introduce little Miss Bree. She is a 4 year old female Cocker Spaniel/Golden mix. We're estimating her weight to be around 60 pounds. She is short in stature and just a bit too heavy.

Bree is a puppy mill survivor. A family purchased her on eBay from a breeder this past May, 2011. They quickly realized that something was certainly wrong with Bree because she was terrified of most things, including men. The family, with much sadness, surrendered her to RAGOM on September 25th in hopes that she will find just the right home to help her heal from her emotional wounds and learn what it is to be a dog.

We have had Bree for less than 24 hours and she is truly terrified. She hides in the back of her crate, trembling visibly, and will not come out for food or water. She must be carried outside to go potty and carried back in or she will hide in the farthest corner of our yard.

The good news:

  • She is gentle and has not shown any signs of agression.
  • She appears to like our resident dog and met her without any issues.
  • She will occasionally take treats from our hands.
  • She has kept her crate clean so far overnight and during our first workday with her.
  • Went on an early morning walk with my husband and our dog and did very well. She walks nicely on leash.
  • Bree will most likely need a home with another dog and a yard with a physical fence.

She still needs to have an initial vet exam and will need to be spayed before being adopted. It will be a few weeks before she will be available.

There is much more to learn and to share about this very sweet, very frightened girl. We will post frequent updates for everyone who wants to follow.

I apologize for the first picture being a bit hazy. We will try for a better shot soon.

Hello all,

Thank you to all the nice people that stopped by and visited with Bree at Petco today. Bree wasn't participating much. She really does have a little more pep than what we saw from her in the store. I think the environment was a bit too much for her. When we left, she hopped right in the car with her tail wagging. When we got home, she again, happily bounced into the house. We went for a walk shortly afterward and she did the little happy dance she does when she knows we're heading out for a walk. She is now sleeping quietly on the couch next to me as I type.

Bree has met several children lately, and she doesn't appear to have any fear of them except one time when 4 children at once quickly crowded around her. That made her tremble. She's not afraid of all men I have learned. Only certain ones and I'm not sure what the common denominator is. There were men that visited with her in the store today and she didn't tremble.

Bree was spayed a week ago and her incision looks very nice. She is now ready to be adopted. She needs a home that will give her a variety of experiences and the opportunity to meet different people. Someone to help her overcome her shyness and build her confidence. Bree is gentle and calm and would do best in a home that is not too loud and bustling.

Bree does wonderfully in the car. She stays in one spot and alternates between looking out the window and laying down. She hops in and out on her own.

I'm trying to determine if Bree really does need another dog in her new home. I'm going to intentionally watch her to see if looks to our dog for reassurrance or direction. On our walks, Bree does her own thing and doesn't follow our dog. I think it's only when Bree is afraid that she watches to see what our dog does. Again, we're going to evaluate this over the next several days.

All things said, I cannot believe people aren't lining up to adopt this girl. She's a nice size, healthy, young, gentle, housebroken, and trustworthy. If I didn't enjoy fostering so much, I'd keep her myself!

Hello everyone,

Thanks to all the nice folks that visited with Bree today at the Chuck and Don's event. She met many nice people albeit a bit shyly. All in all I was proud of her. It was her first adoption event and they can be overwhelming. As soon as our car was in the garage and the door closed, she happily jumped out and bounced inside, clearly joyful to be home. She seems to enjoy car rides.

Bree is doing very well. She has become fond of the couch and will carry the stuffed toys from the toy box to the couch and lay with them. Today she had about a dozen stuffed toys on the couch with her. I've seen her playing with the stuffed toys, throwing them in the air with her mouth. So cute! She especially likes the squeaky ones.

She likes to cuddle on the couch with me in the evenings. I have to admit, I really like it too. She continues to enjoy walks and alternates between walking next to us and walking ahead on the Flexi-Lead along side our dog.

At night, Bree sleeps quietly in a crate at the foot of our bed. I don't believe she needs the crate, but I like not having to worry about what the dogs are doing at night and I sleep better.

Bree has an appointment to get spayed this coming Saturday (10/29) and will then be ready for adoption a few days later, once she has had time to heal.
