Please welcome Casey to the RAGOM family!  She joined us on 8/17/11 and now lives with FM and one cat in St. Paul.  Casey is a very sweet and polite 11year old, spayed senior girl - she loves to be close to people!  She comes to RAGOM due to a divorse, and long work hours.  After living with her original family for all of her 11 years, it is tough to make a big change like this, but Casey is adjusting very well, and still has a lot of love to give to a special person/family.

Casey gets along fine with both men and women and has lived with children - there have been no concerns with her behavior; I have not yet had an opportunity to observe her with children since her arrival in foster care, but she meets new people easily and politely.  That being said, as a senior girl, who has some health issues, a quiet home with no small children seems likely to be the best fit for Casey.  Casey has spent most of her life living with a cat, and  if he could talk, my resident cat, Hunter, would say she is the nicest dog he has ever met - he was lying next to her within 1 1/2 hours of her arrival.  Hunter gives Casey 4 paws up for good manners and courtesy.  She respects baby gates and is kennel trained, however is reluctant to go in.  I have not had her in the kennel since the first evening, as there seems to be no reason for it with this sweet girl.  Casey has also set about winning the hearts of my neighbors with her typical Golden Retriever gentle spirit, love of people and her polite manners.   I will seek out a chance to introduce her to other dogs, and provide an update soon.

Casey visited Inver Grove Heights Animal Hosptal last week, and is described as a 'work in progress'.   She is up to date on vaccinations, and heart worm negative. She has just begun treatment for infections in both ears.  Casey has been treated successfully with Phenbarbitol for seisures and Prednisone for an allergy to grass for most of her life.  Her seisures have been mild and infrequent.  She has irritated skin due to allergies, and the vet is hoping to identify alternative treatment options.  Casey also will require some dental work before she can find her forever family,  however,  she is quite overweight and will need to shed a few pounds before dental work may be done.  She is presently carrying 92 pounds on a petite frame, and will be aiming for 60 -65 pounds.  Between medications that add pounds and a  family who believed  food equals love, Casey's waistline has suffered!  She is anemic and her thyroid may be an issue with her wieght, but her medications make diagnosis problematic.  While her medications cause her to drink plenty of water; she has had no accidents in my house, and I have left her for approximately 6 hours at a stretch. She sometimes has a bit of difficulty with stairs, and I am using a ramp with her for now in an effort to minimize stress on her leg/hips until she is able to shed some of those extra pounds.  She is happy to sniff and explore the neighborhood on short walks.

Casey loves to ride in the car - and according to her surrendering owner, has an especially fond place in her heart for black SUV's!   Casey will need a bit of time to address health issues but would love to meet her forever family soon - could it be you?  Please also consider sponsoring this special girl, to assist with medical expenses and help her dreams of a forever home come true!

Updates

Did you ever have a time in your life where things just didn't seem to go your way no matter how hard you tried?  Well sweet Casey is experiencing one of those times in her life just now.  With high hopes she began her allergy injections, however after only her 3rd injection she had a very negative response to the treatment.  Her face puffed up, she became groggy and later that day she lost her footing while using the ramp to get into my SUV - no additional injuries, just general weakness.  It appears her immune system is too weak to tolerate the allergy injections at this time.  And if that was not enough, she has also been diagnosed with MRSA - an antibiotic resistant staph infection.  With the help of great veterinarians and the added assistance of other wonderful RAGOM volunteers we are doing our best to help this dear senior girl again find good health and the happy Golden life.  Please send Casey your loving thoughts as she rebuilds her strength after these setbacks!

Hi, Casey here!  I really appreciate all of you who were thinking good thoughts for me last week when I had the allergy testing done.  Dr. Globus said I was a very brave girl - I stayed very still and did not even need sedation during the procedure.  I am soooooo glad that is over!   Here is a picture FM took of the testing site on my belly......do you think there is some way to comb my fur over and cover up this bald spot?  Turns out I am allergic to lots of different things....this week I will start allergy shots to try to get rid of my itchies.   I promise to keep you posted on how that goes....

Thank you again to my Sponsor, Morgan Sumners, my Anonymous Goldzilla Friend, Cheery, and to my new Anonymous Holiday Donor!  Your contributions are very important to me and all of the RAGOM pups who need medical care in order to live a happy, healthy GOLDEN life!

XO, Casey

Hello - it's Casey here - Happy Holidays to all humans and fur-butts in RAGOM-land!  I am enjoying the holidays -  my tail just keeps wagging and I enjoy going from person to person for love and pets... sometimes I even bark a little bit to make sure I get my share of the attention.

I want to say a special 'thank you' to my sponsor Morgan Sumners, and to my anonymous Goldzilla Friend, and also to Cheery, who has recently made a Holiday donation to RAGOM!  You are all very important, and it means alot to know you are thinking of me.  Your contributions are what make it possible for me and the other fur-butts to receive the medical care we need so that we can be healthy and ready to find our Forever Homes!

By the way, my allergy testing is scheduled for this week - so please think of me.  Once these allergies are under control I am hoping my Forever Home is just around the corner.... sure hope there is someone out there looking for an older girl to snuggle up with this winter!

XO,  Casey

I struggle to write updates for Casey - there is not a lot that is new and dramatic going on in her life these days. We move forward each day and measure progress in small increments - trying to focus on the pleasures, not the difficulties. Each day in spite of her health problems Casey also finds enjoyment!

Allergies continue to plague this sweet girl - Casey is itchy most of the time, and still wears the E-collar about 22 hours a day in order to prevent self-injury. Bacteria, fungus and yeast; she has so many itchy spots... her belly, feet and face.... it is tough to see how uncomfortable she is at times. The steroids she had been taking for many years before coming to RAGOM have been discontinued, and in 3-4 weeks she will have been off the steroids for a long enough time for her wonderful allergist, Dr. Globus, to do allergy testing and then hopefully begin a different treatment plan. Casey continues on a special allergy diet; this means still no treats other than baked potatoes for Casey. :0( ...I guess Santa will need to come up with some other ideas.

Casey has continued to lose weight - on average about 1 pound per week - a safe weight loss according to the vet. She came in at 92.7 pounds and as of her weigh in yesterday she is 76.3 pounds! If you look back at the pictures here, you can get a little idea of the change in her figure - although I guess I have posted mostly shots of her face... didn't want her to feel self-conscious about those extra pounds, I guess. Casey's target weight is 60-65 pounds - once she reaches this goal it will be possible to consider some needed dental treatment. Inside this overweight dog, she really is a petite girl!

Walks in the neighborhood and nearby parks are a highlight for Casey. Gradually increasing the distance and taking care not to put too much stress on her arthritic hip, she is enjoying her walks more and more, as her weight goes down and her stamina improves. Casey enjoys meeting other dogs and people of all ages, with a wagging tail ... and sometimes little barks of pleasure. In the morning she especially loves greeting the neighborhood children as they are waiting for their school bus.

I want to sat "Thank you" once again to Casey's Sponsor, Morgan Sumners. Your generous support is helping to pay for the much needed medical care Casey is receiving, and is greatly appreciated! If other friends of RAGOM are considering charitable contributions yet this year, please consider a sponsorship or a contribution which will help with the care of these dear dogs who are a part of the RAGOM family. Happy Holidays to all, and thank you for caring.

I am sooooooo embarrassed  - FM  INSISTS on showing you this photo of me!  She says it is cute - but I say it is highly unflattering....  I think I look as if I am from another planet... what do you think?  I am wearing this          E collar almost all of the time..... sometimes I try to rub it off when FM is not looking.  Mostly  I  keep it on - except when I am out walking - so that I do not chew on my itchy feet and legs.
FM puts soothing lotions on my skin and that helps some too, but I just can't resist the itchies.   I am just waiting to see the allergist next week to learn what will happen next.....    However, I am a resilient gal, and do not let an E-collar slow me down one bit - I still love to go for rides and do my best not to be left behind anytime the SUV pulls out of the garage!
XO, Casey

Hi - it's me - Casey!  I am having a great fall.... and I hope you are too!  Now that I have lost some weight (please say you notice my slimmer waistline!) and had some more changes in my medications I am feeling so much more energetic and happy.  I have been riding in the car alot - my most favorite thing to do - next to napping that is.  FM has been taking me to visit different parks around the Twin cities so I have had lots of new and interesting things to see and smell!

I walk politely on leash, am very friendly and love to say hello to all of the humans and dogs we meet where ever we go.   I am still on the special allergy diet - and I guess I am adjusting to the new food.  What I do not understand is this:  if I am on a Rabbit and potato diet, why does FM get so upset when I snack on bunny nuggets in the back yard?  If you are looking for a sweet older girl to snuggle up with when the weather gets cold please talk to your placement advisor about ME!

Miss Casey gets big points for adaptability!  She has begun work with Veterinary Allergist, Dr. Globus and is now on a special limited ingredient diet of rabbit and potato in an effort to sort out her allergy situation.  Nothing else.  This means no treats, no more peanut butter on her medications or peanut butter filled Kongs for a bed time snack.  I do not know if this has been more difficult for her or for me.  I would like to be able to tell you Casey has adjusted gracefully but the truth is she is a rascal.  Some days she take her pills all gentleness and polite manners, while other days when I place the pills in her mouth I just don't know what will happen next.  Sometimes pills must be hidden in pieces of baked potato - the one extra she is allowed on this allergy diet - but that trick doesn't always work either.  Sweet Casey, gentle senior girl, continues to be full of surprises.  :0)

Casey is a registered Golden Retriever, and while looking through her registration paperwork I learned she is registered as "K.C. Golden Sunshine" - yes, that is her official name!  Just makes me smile, as she truly is Golden Sunshine!    She certainly loves her naps and belly rubs, and short walks do just fine - sunny and sweet she gives love to all the people and dogs we encounter as we walk through the neighborhood.

Psssssst, it's me Casey - FM is forgetting to tell you the best news - I have lost 3 more pounds!  Woof!

New arthritis medication has put a fresh bounce in Casey's step and a lot more wag in her tail. Casey had a great time meeting lots of people and dogs at GOLDZILLA. Each day I see her becoming more out-going and eager to meet new people since beginning the medication. Her personality is blossoming! She seems happy and eager to greet the dogs we meet while out walking, and has even taken a few trotting steps in pursuit of a squirrel! We continue to take frequent short walks in a effort to build up Casey's strength, while being very careful not to overly stress her due to her weight. Although Casey continues to be on a reducing diet my aim is to also supply enough love and belly rubs to ensure Casey enjoys the golden life she deserves each day, while she waits for her own forever family.

Casey's skin and ears have been resistant to treatment and she has begun a second course of antibiotics. She has also begun to work with an allergist, Dr. Helen Globus. She still has a lot of itching from allergies. She looks so sad during the times I have needed to put the 'cone head' on her in order to prevent her from chewing on her itchy feet.

Again, thank you to Casey's Sponsor, Morgan Sumners, and thank you also to Casey's anonymous "Goldzilla Friend". Casey has a way to go in regaining her health, and your support is greatly appreciated!

Miss Casey asked me to write this update as she is still not up to snuff after a bit of a rough spell last week when she experienced serious side effects from the new anti-histamine prescribed for her allergy to grass.  She became dizzy and unsteady on her feet - it was tough to see her having so much difficulty getting up and walking; a couple of times her legs were unable to support her and she fell while we were out for a potty walk.  Since the medication has been discontinued she is returning to normal, and she is becoming steadier on her feet, however during her visit to the Inver Grove Heights Animal Hospital on Friday her hips were x-rayed and severe arthritis was found in her right hip.  Between the arthritis and excess weight she carries, Casey is having a tough time getting around.  She continues to be quite a puzzle for the veterinary staff, as unfortunately due to the Prednisone and Phenobarbitol  she is already taking for her allergies and seisure disorder the options for pain relief and other allergy treatments are severely limited; they are continuing to seek out alternative treatments for this dear senior girl.  She also been diagnosed with a bacterial skin infection and started anti-biotic treatment for this, so perhaps some of the itching will resolve as this infection clears up.  Casey will continue on a modest exercise program and try to shed some of her excess pounds (she has now lost 3 pounds, 2 ounces) as we aim to help her feel healthier with each passing day.  Already the vitamin suppliment, change of diet and fish oil have Casey's beautiful red curly coat looking much shinier!

Casey and I want to say a big THANK YOU to Morgan Sumners, who is now sponsoring Casey!   For a senior Golden Girl with complex health concerns, it appears achieving optimum health and  pain management will be a lengthy process for Casey.   As the medical expenses add up it is wonderful to have your support, Morgan!

Casey loves to eat.... meals... treats... and she will take any medication as long as there is peanut butter to help ease it down.  Here are Casey and Hunter hanging out in the kitchen as I get dinner ready.  I cannot help laughing, as I take the lid off the peanut butter jar Casey makes the most wonderful happy sound -  it is something between the sound of a loud cat purring and the sound of Darth Vadar breathing!

Sunday, September 4, 2011

Hi - it's Casey here!  Just wanted to give a little 'woof'' and tell you about my week.  FM and I have been spending lots of  time together - she calls me a velcro dog because I spend most of my time close to her.  I nap close to her chair and give little nudges now and then looking for love, and I have also perfected that doe eyed look with my chin on her knee and a little Mona Lisa smile for good measure.  (FM is a pushover for this move!)However, I am mature and have great manners, so I am never pushy!

FM has taken me back to the Inver Grove Heights Animal Hospital for a check up and was happy to see how polite I was with the other dog and baby in a stroller who shared the waiting room with us.  Dr. Quast says my ear infections are better, the anemia is better and she gave me a new antihistamine for my allergies... and the best news is that my diet is working... I have lost 1 pound and 4 ounces in a week.  I still try to eat around the green beans FM adds to my food, but I am getting used to them.  I will let you know how I am doing in 2 weeks, after my next weigh in.....

We also went shopping at Petco this week.... this was a tough one for me - did you know there are treats EVERYWHERE at Petco?  And lots of them right under my nose.... FM had to forgive me for trying to sneak a bite.... to heck with the diet, I say!  If there is a treat that close, it was meant to be mine, right?  ...I admit it - I love to eat!  We met a couple of dogs at Petco, too, and I was my usual polite unruffled self (think of Miss Manners here)  One dog got a little barky with me so I gave him a couple of quiet 'woofs' so he would know he couldn't push me around, but I never lost my cool.

Have a fun Labor Day weekend..... and I will hope to meet you at Goldzilla!

PS.  This is a picture of me with my nightly bedtime snack - a Kong with peanut butter - yummy.
