Marco 11-253

Profile

RAGOM fans welcome big boy Marco!  Marco came into RAGOM's care on July 28th and was transported along with Jersey girl (11-254) to her new home in Bloomington.  Foster Dad met Marco there and helped give these two new members a bath at Cindy's house.  Thanks Cindy for doing this!

Here are the details on Marco:

He is all up to date on his vaccinations and is already neutered and micro-chipped.
Marco will turn three years old on January 9th.  Marco is a purebred Golden Retriever.
He is a big boy and weighed 95.6 pounds at his vet appointment on Monday evening.  The vet said she would like to see him trimmed down just a bit closer to the 90 pound range.  He is also a tall boy.  He stands 24" at the front shoulders.
Marco was surrendered by his owners because of too much travel and not enough time for him.
He lived with three children (5,8, and 10).

At the vet visit we discussed a bit of his dry itchy skin on his back and stomach.  The vet sent FD home with 2 weeks worth of antibiotics to help alleviate the dry itchy skin which she thought looked a bit infected.  We also have Marco on a grain free diet of Salmon and Sweet Potato dog food.  We are also giving Mr. Marco a daily dose of Omega Fish oil caplets too.  And the final recommendation from our vet was to give Marco twice weekly baths.  One using a shampoo for his itchy, dry skin (good ole Head and Shoulders) and the other an Oatmeal based shampoo.  I successfully gave Marco his first bath alone with no help tonight and he did wonderful.

I can't say enough good things about Marco.  He is a gentle giant with perfect manners so far.  He has not tried to counter surf and believe me it would be minimal effort on his part as he is so tall.  He loves to run around the house with a toy in his mouth.  He watches Indy and Lauren in their daily games of wrestle mania but so far prefers to be by FD or chasing a tennis ball.  We have taken Marco on several walks and he does pull but is starting to get the hang of the Gentle Leader.  He sleeps through the night on a pet bed or the floor with nary a peep and no accidents.  The only accident so far was one submissive pee when he was really excited/nervous.

If you want to meet Marco in person please get in touch with your placement advisor.  FD will try and get some better pictures in natural lighting for the next post.

XOXO
Marco

Updates

Thursday, November 5, 2020

It is with great sadness that we inform the RAGOM community of Marco's passing on 10/10/2020 after a short bout with cancer. He would have been 12 in January, too young to leave us yet, but we are very grateful for the 9+ years he touched our lives.

He was a very kind, patient boy who loved his walks and romps in the woods, loved to play and roll in the snow, loved to swim, and loved to eat, anything and everything. More than anything he loved people and loved to be petted. He spent 6 1/2 years as a therapy dog bringing great joy to many at Three Links Retirement Home, the Long-Term Care Center at Northfield Hospital, and Laura Baker Services which serves mentally disabled adults, all in Northfield MN.

We visited these venues weekly, visiting residents in their rooms or communal areas or taking afternoon strolls with them. Marco got very excited when the vest and short leash came out and he knew he was going to work. People used to ask me how I trained him to be a therapy dog. My response was that I didn't really do anything. He was just a natural. He was calm and patient and knew exactly how to make people feel good.

The last year of Marco's life was spent living up north near Park Rapids where we built our retirement home. At this point, he was a retired therapy dog who spent his days roaming in the woods, swimming in our lake, and basking in the sun.

We want to thank Kelly B, his RAGOM foster dad, for selecting us to care for this gentle giant. Marco was in Kelly's care only 2 weeks and saw him only once a year at Goldzilla, but he never forgot Kelly and the love and care given him during those 2 weeks. He wagged his tail and squealed with delight those few times he saw Kelly.

Rest comfortably, fuzzy bear. We miss you already. You will be in our hearts forever.

Marco went home with his new family on Wednesday night.  He has been busy getting acquainted to his new home and taking lots of walks to explore his new neighborhood.  His new Mom has plans to take him to obedience classes and her goal is to have Marco trained as a therapy dog.  This is something I believe he would do well in.  Marco just loves everyone and he has a very gentle disposition for such a tall dog.

That is Marco and his pal, Indy, sitting and smiling nice in my backyard.  Even though Indy is just slightly behind Marco in the photo you can see that he is a tall boy.  His foster sisters miss him but they know he has found a great forever home.  Thank you to his new family for choosing RAGOM to find your new family member!
