Wylie has moved to a new foster home. His first foster home couldn’t come home from work during the day and she didn’t like crating him for so long, and asked that he get a foster home that worked fewer hours. First foster mom did a fantastic job teaching Wylie that dog teeth and human skin are not a match. We have not seen any of the bitey behavior that he was exhibiting at his original owner’s home.
Wylie came to our house on Saturday. There are six other dogs here (three large and three small) and he met them all very nicely. He is very respectful of my senior girls who have let him know that he is a puppy and they are the seniors and they set the rules on behavior and he had better comply, and he does. He’s also been very good with the small dogs.
Wylie’s original owner had gotten some bad advice from some trainers to use aversives (sticking finger down throat, etc.) to change behaviors. That never works, it only increases anxiety and causes bad behaviors to worsen. What I have seen in the short time that he has been with us is that positive motivation works wonders with this dog – he is very treat motivated. Wylie is an untrained puppy that will benefit from positive motivational obedience training, exercise and structure. He loves paper products (paper towels, toilet paper, cardboard, newpapers, magazines) and will shred them up into tiny pieces if allowed to get them. He’s been doing an excellent job of getting me to pick up items around my house.
More to come as we get to know Mr. Wylie better. I do know that his ideal home will be dedicated to obedience training (which anyone with a six month old puppy would need to do).
