Gimli (Mr. Dumiss 11-184)

Profile

Mr. Dumiss is an 8-week-old UTD, PB, reddish GR puppy who was born with a significant heart murmur. His vet says there is a possibility he will improve or grow out of it as he develops. He will see the vet again the third week of June to see if there has been any change. He will also be seeing specialists in the next few weeks who will give further insight into his condition. Mr. Dumiss is currently unavailable for adoption.

What the current fosters have noticed regarding the heart murmur is how hard his heart pounds after exertion. There are days he seems to run out of steam quickly throughout the day. At those times, he just lies down and watches his sister (the resident puppy) continue to play. After a little rest, he's back up playing as hard as ever. But then there are days when he never seems to run out of steam - he is a bit of a mystery!

He will be on the small side since both parents are smaller goldens weighing around 50 lbs. Also, both parents are used for hunting. He is being potty trained at present. He is quite opposed to the restrictions of baby gates, yard gates, crates, doors, etc. When restricted by them he barks and whines incessantly. He humps towels or blankets and us if we let him, but we are training him not to. He's such a cute boy that every kid (and most adults!) who see him want him! We started puppy socialization classes on Sunday, but he mostly slept through the playtime. We intend to take him every week while we have him. Also, lots of people - kids and adults - have come to see and play with him and his sister, so he should be very accustomed to interacting with people and other dogs by the time he's available to adopt.

Final update:

Mr. Dumiss, now known as Gimli, was adopted on Wed., 6/29! He now lives with a very fun, loving family. One of the family members is a wonderful former RAGOM dog. Mr. Dumiss/Gimli walked in like he felt right at home. We just know he will be lovingly cared for the rest of his life! We're happy for you, sweet boy!

Here are pictures of him with most of his new family.

Mr. Dumiss is now available for adoption!!

He is such a cute little guy. His legs are getting longer, and it won't be long before he loses his sharp, little baby teeth. His vet was hopeful that Mr. Dumiss would grow out of his heart murmur and would be able to lead a normal life. He loves attention, and would love to have some one-on-one time with a forever family. Right now he and his sister still live together. They have a great time playing together, but they compete for loving adult attention, and often get in each other's way. He is looking for a loving family to care for him and to help him grow into a perfect pet.

We took Mr. Dumiss to have an ultrasound, and he has a small heart defect that could possibly correct itself as he matures. He is 9 1/2 weeks old now and weighs 12 lbs., which is slightly more than his sister (Eva, our resident pup). When he is 6 months old, he will need to be rechecked. His size and weight are normal for a puppy his age, but his activity level is slightly less than his sister's. He seems to need a bit more sleep than her. He will go to the vet next week for his booster shots and to be microchipped. We are checking into whether it is safe for him to go under anesthesia to be neutered.

He is very close to being completely potty-trained, and he is now completely crate-trained. He sleeps around six hours at night before needing to go out to potty. The longest we have left him crated during the day is four hours (and with no accidents).  He has entered his crate on his own for naps, though sometimes he is not happy being crated when we leave the house without him.  He is a happy, lovable little guy who needs lots of chew toys!  He thinks his sister is one of those chew toys.  Right now they are chasing each other around the house.  We have walked him on leash for small distances, and he balks and chews the leash.  He is going to puppy socialization class on Sundays and having a good time.

The reason we are looking for a new foster to take Mr. Dumiss is that he and his sister are becoming very attached to each other, and it will only get harder to separate them as they get older. Otherwise, he is a very adorable puppy!
