Best wishes for a Golden life, Addie"- From The Tooth Fairy

March 26, 2011

Addie is a spayed female retriever mix at 9 years old. The vet states 50 or so pounds would be a healthy weight for her so she is a nice compact size retriever. The other side of her is as an educated guess of Jack Russell or similar Terrier. I have Addie as a house guest for 6 days now and I have to say she has showed us so much, how to appreciate life. I will have to say, her first week has been keeping us busy trying to get her overall health stable. Her story though somewhat short due to we know very little about her past, but what we do know is she was severely neglected and her story is very sad, but inspiring.

Starting on 2/18/2011 at 9:42am Addie was found at a home in Minneapolis, MN and brought to Animal Control. Addie was 1 of 3 dogs brought in. This is word for word her Physical exam at intake at the impound. It states, "Wt. 18.3 lbs. Body weight score of 1/5, with no palpable muscle beneath skin.  Nails are overgrown with some front nails measuring 1 1/2" in length.  Teeth are severe grade for tartar, gingivitis, gum recession and tooth mobility. Dog's mouth is painful. Dog is well socialized and will walk on a leash."

On 3/16/2011 her life changed dramatically when she came into the caring hands of Ragom Volunteer Konnie who picked her up from the impound and took her directly to VCA vet clinic in Richfield, where they weighed her in at now 32 lbs. She had tapeworms which were treated immediately. She was already spayed when brought in and microchipped. She was started on pain medication and antibiotics for her life threatening mouth infection. Directions are to stabilize her overall health so she can have a very intensive dental surgery.

I picked her up at noon on 3/18/2011 from the Vet Clinic along with my 18 year old daughter. When the Tech brought out this skinny, frail and sickly looking dog, My daughter was breathless and started having tears come out of her eyes. We could barely touch her without feeling like were going to break her. Every bone in her spine, ribs, and hips were not just felt but easily seen, even from a distance. Even though a bath was given at the vet, the odor was nauseating, mostly her mouth odor. Her hair is thin and still falling out, skin is dry and flaky. It was hard to imagine how she survived such an ordeal and she still was not out of the woods yet. Also another RAGOM volunteer Devon came by to take photos in hopes that criminal charges can be pursued. Photos were requested by city of Minneapolis.

Then we proceeded to our vet to prearrange how and when this mouth surgery was going to work. When the vet tech saw her when we walked in her first reaction was to feed her as much as possible, but her mouth is so sore she will try to just swallow and than choke. The vet stated the same thing I did, she does not even want to touch her. Addie is very protective of her mouth right now and will try to avoid any contact with it. She showed no sign of aggression even when in pain. We made a plan to do the surgery on Wed. 3/23. I think her Vet Dr. Katie really has a special place in her heart for Addie. She made sure I had everything possible to accomplish this task.

When I got her home the first thing in my mind was "she is so happy." Her tail is waggin' in circles and she was checking everything out, she gets along great with my resident dog Buddy and Foster sister Honey 01-240. And was having fun playing with my cat Harrison. Her body is weak but her will to live is very strong. She loves belly rubs as the video shows you on her first night here with us. She loves, I mean loves kids, she does not jump up, she loves to give kisses, she loves like a puppy. Our mission is to fatten her up. She is on Natural Balance moist food, 4 times a day, with cottage cheese and EVO canned food in between. By day 3 she was much stronger and able to jump on the couch with ease and took over my heating pad. Oh well, she needs it more than I do right now. I attempted to give her a short walk with my other dogs and her back end is weak and was limping along after 1/2 block, so no more of that at least for now. Her front side is pretty strong, she seems to be gaining mass from front to back. She still has no padding on her behind, so when she tries to sit, she literally falls over to her side. It's so sad. She has had only one accident in the house and I am sure it is because when it was her first day here she was a bit anxious and she was drinking a lot of water that day. No accidents since. We do not have a fence and she uses the tie out but I go with her outside for now. She has some separation anxiety. My husband states when I leave she whines at the door. She only really barks when she is really happy which is often as of now, but who could blame her?

On 3/23/2011, I dropped her off at the vet for her oral surgery at 8am. They called me at 2 pm stating she did great and she's ready to go home. I could hear her in the background yelping. She does not care for being kenneled up. When I got there she was ready to get outta there and she directed me to my car. The vet said they are going to keep her teeth for awhile as an example of why you should take care of your dog's teeth. OK, I bet you're asking how many teeth does she have now?? She has no teeth behind her canines and two canines are gone. Some teeth were already gone, most were loose and decayed and her gumlines now have sutures because they had to drain the abscesses. She is to continue her antibiotics for another two weeks and canned food for a week and can continue to moist food after that. The vet says her health has such a better chance of improvement now and it was for the best. The first night was tough, she was crying till she finally feel asleep.

The day after was sooo much better. She is eating her food and there is far less crying. She still wants to lick on herself and then realizes this causes pain on her gums. Update ya soon, on a very special girl.

Wow!! a sponsor already, which is wonderful, she needs all the support she can get.

Addie found a family, Kelly and Mike.

Good luck to our angel, Addie.

Sure has been HOT! Addie and the rest of the gang are finding wet activities to keep cool and stay in shape.  She has turned out to be a great swimmer, she just floats nicely and she even jumped off the dock after my daughter and resident dog Buddy.  They are great swimming teachers.

Here are some shots of Addie that were taken at Petapalooza Saturday.  Addie says, "Take a look at me now!"

Monday, June 20, 2011

We finally got permission to publicize the photos of Addie that Animal Control took the day they rescued her. She had already gained 12-14 pounds by the time she came into RAGOM, so you can see just how horrendous her condition was when the authorities seized her. Addie's former owner has been charged with animal cruelty.  CAUTION:  These images are disturbing.

What's up?? Addie is still here on Available Dogs page. This can't be.  She is the sweetest, most loving, innocent soul.  She appreciates life and shows it each day by saying I LOVE YOU each and every morning when I get out of bed.  It just makes my day.  You will never be lonely with Addie. (see video clip.)

This was me just a couple of months ago...

Stayin' Healthy and lovin' her new life. She howls in happiness. Eating well now, heading to small kernel dry food. Her coat is thicker and softer.  She is so much stronger now and has longer endurance. She is now really ready for a new home, Her vet care is complete and her mouth is healed. I give her omega 3 fish oil tabs as an anti-inflammatory and to help maintain skin health. She no longer uses Prescription Rimadyl. Her skin yeast condition is gone.

She is a kisser and her breath is great now, She hops around with her back legs and jumps up about 3 inches off the ground with her front. She is unable to actually jump up on people. She is so cute...

Addie went to the vet a week ago and she is now 40 lbs. and filling out nicely. She has a bit of fat stores in the belly now. So hopefully she can build some muscle strength. Her exercise tolerance is improving greatly, she's even getting a little pep in her step with a gallop. She is even pulling on the leash, so I may start to use the gentle leader before this turns into a habit.

Her appetite has changed. She is satisfied with eating 2 main meals a day and a small snack in between. Had to have antibiotics for 1 more week due to that area in the lower jawline was a bit reddened and swollen,  So moist food for a bit longer than expected. She is now eating small bites hard food moistened in water and eating with the rest of the doggy clan. Medicated weekly shampoo treatment is very effective with the yeast she had on her skin and ears, her hair continues to get thicker and softer. She is so nice to pet and rub now that she has some flesh on her bones and soft fur. Vet continues to want to see her on antinflammatory medicine Rimadyl in small doses for now she has a bit more conditioning to do and a bit later we will re-evaluate. She continues to howl when she sooo happy and gives lots of kisses. If you massage her she purrs. She liked running in the water at the lake, but would not submerge herself, the water was a bit cold yet, maybe next time. She gets along great with my grand kids ages 2 and 5 and 3 mos. and plays with my cat. Never seen an aggressive behavior, even when she is in pain.

As of now she does well on a tie out and no accidents in the house, she has free roam at all times in the house, No problems. She is older and naps often, but can get excited like a puppy when played with. She now knows how to sit on command. She is coming around nicely.

Addie's furever home will need very little expectations, the most important is lots of love and kisses, a soft warm place to sleep. I think she would be considered small enough to be acceptable in rental homes. She loves to play with the cat, so a cat would be great but not mandatory. She would make a great companion and is compact enough to take anywhere.

Hi everyone, Addie has been very busy trying to gain some muscle mass but it has to be done slow and steady. On the 4/5 we brought her in to be weighed, she was 36lbs and walking tolerance is about 2 blocks but at times still a bit much. I noticed her tolerance level was much less after she was finished taking the Rimadyl for her mouth surgery. She still topples over when she sits. As of now she is kinda top heavy. Addie's been losing her dry coarse coat in large amounts and it is being replaced by softer darker in color, she still is bald along her back legs, ears and top of her nose. She has been eating the Natural Balance moist, mixed with wet food, We are gradually moving toward moist only.

On 4/6 she had her 2 week follow up after her mouth surgery, Dr. Candace emailed me the photos of her gums and teeth while in the mouth and another after. They are saving the pictures to use on their website.

She is now 37.6lbs YEAH!! Everyone at the vet was jumping for joy. As far as the mouth, she still has 2 areas on her lower jaw that the bone is still a bit exposed and sutures not dissolved yet. Vet says one more week on antibiotic and moist food only. Addie is still squirmy about people looking in her mouth, but she did not appear in pain and did not attempt to bite.

Now we can concentrate on the non emergency issues. Her skin is raw and flaky along her flanks, the outside of the ear and top of her nose. We have concluded Yeast was present but not out of control. Starting her on Ketochlor medicated shampoo, which is awesome due to only have to bathe her once a week. It contains an antifungal, Ketoconazole and antiseptic Chlorhexidine, and an ingredient that forms a barrier that yeast prefers not to grow on.

Vet looked thoroughly at her back end. She states her hips are OK, but her lower back appears arthritic and painful, which explains the love of my heating pad on that area, She is also needing reconditioning to gain strength in this area, Vet states that we should keep up with small walks, add stretching and range of motion before activity and try to add swimming approximately 5 minutes to start as soon as the lake warms up a bit, she states within a week or so. For now, back on Rimadyl and will see how it goes later.

Watch this new video of Addie and see how much her life has already changed!
