Ellie ‘was’ a stray who had been wandering around for a minimum of 2-3 weeks prior to coming into Ragom for rescue. The local shelter contacted me and stated that a family contacted the shelter and stated they had a ‘poor little senior golden (in their garage) that no one wanted or claimed who had been wandering around alone for at least 2+ weeks,  cold and very thin.’ Thank God this family was kind enough to take her into their heated garage prior to the blizzard on December 11th.   (We are guessing that she is perhaps around 7-10 years old). After contact by the shelter, Ellie was taken the next day to the vet’s office.  We were shocked what she weighed! Just 41# and was so thin and dirty.  She was understandably frightened and somewhat lame. She definitely in a poor state of health and it was decided to hold off that day for vaccinations pending on how she did during the night at the vet office for observation.  After receiving a dose of pain meds and doxycycline for the Lyme’s, and of course food, she was better the next morning.  She was then vaccinated that following day.  Ellie was then taken to be groomed and bathed that next day also.   She was quite nervous about the ‘bath’ part but enjoyed being in the kennel with the warm blower drying her.  Ellie is now UTD and chipped and (we are fairly positive she is spayed)  *note: her dew claws had also been removed. 

 

The medications since rescue are:

 

Doxycycline (1.5 tabs) – (we had all the pills cut in half for easier dispensing)  which Ellie receives 2X a day in her food.  She did receive 1 Deremaxx a day for pain the first week (which really helped her feel better).  In addition, receives one Synov chew for her joints each day.  Ellie is missing 2 bottom teeth and her teeth are not the best and perhaps should be cleaned.  Her ears are fine and fecal was negative for any worms, etc.  Ellie should be re-tested with a blood panel in 3 weeks.  (around January 7th or so).  Ellie is on prescription Science Diet I/D (3-4 cups a day and we feed he 3X a day).

 

About Ellie:  She is a gentle soul.  She is still learning her name; she will pace wondering what to do and then settle down and sleep at times (nothing serious at all). She is not sensitive to noises and remains quite calm to new things/sounds.  She is fine with other dogs and great with our cats ( a submissive girl).  After leashing to go outside, Ellie has now come far enough where she does “ask’ to to potty outside and is doing just fine with that.  Ellie understandably wants someone right by her to be pet and yes, maybe some food?!  (Her waist is only 16” around…..very tiny, she is much thinner than she looks in photos)

 

A very typical golden girl.   To help Ellie put weight on will take some time and yes, she loves her kibble and snacks.  (Ellie gets approximately 1 – 1/14 cup kibble 3X a day (the prescription food).  She is very respectful of our resident dog’s food and has no issues other than being hungry!  Ellie really has a beautiful gate when trotted around the back yard.  In the week we have had her, she has made great strides. Her potty training is fine.  She is no longer crated but totally fine loose in the home.  Ellie will cozy up to you curled up in a small ‘ball’ perfectly content.  A true golden in need, just in time for the holiday.

In Loving Memory of My Sweet Little Ellie

It is with a heavy heart that I have to write this farewell to my dear sweet Ellie girl. Ellie crossed over the rainbow bridge on a warm spring April afternoon. After spending nearly 3 short months with us, our little Ellie was overcome with a tumor in her trachea, cutting off her oxygen supply, and so we made the decision to save her any more discomfort and let her dream her way to a better place surrounded by those who loved and cared for her.

I will miss those hazel brown eyes looking so compassionately at me, waiting to be fed a meal or given a milk bone treat. She had such a neat prance as I walked her around the neighborhood and would run to me like a young puppy with floppy legs whenever I called her. In return, all little Ellie wanted was to be loved, for she would never stop nudging you with her little nose for more attention or wagging her tail whenever you looked at her. Ellie was such a joy to me and my family.

It is amazing how this little girl could work her way into my heart in such a short period of time, yet those memories oF her will last me a lifetime.

Ellie went off to her forever home on Saturday morning. They were SO excited to pick her up they couldn't get here soon enough. They arrived with a cute new collar with pink hearts on it and her new ID tag shaped like a heart with sparklies on it complete with her new name 'Ellie Johnson'. They will be taking such good care of our girl and do whatever it takes. Lucky girl.

With no exception, my pack and I have a little send off for my fosters heading to their new forever home. Here is Ellie getting all the love from her foster-aunties and her fur-pals.

I want to again thank Rona for getting this precious girl into RAGOM and taking care of her in South Dakota, The transport team of Kathy G., Amy L. and Jen E. for getting her safely to MN in horrible driving conditions.

And a special thanks to her generous sponsors in on honor of Tamra, a fantastic RAGOM volunteer who we lost recently.

Hi there Ellie fans! Ellie is doing great. Her health seems to be stabilizing and the only meds she is on is phenobarbital for her seizures. I have not witnessed any seizures since I have had her, so the only known seizures were back on 12/27.

Her appetite continues to be very healthy. She is now on high quality limited ingredient food, some raw and rice to fatten her up. I will weigh her in the next couple of days and hope to see some gain. Although a petite girl, she is looking to me like she is filling out. Her energy seems to be good and her tail is always wagging!

Ellie is the sweetest dog ever and loves ALL people-- man, woman or child. I took her to the Land O’ Lakes Dog show in downtown St. Paul a couple of weeks ago and she loved it. She barely paid any attention to the hundreds of dogs that were there, but she walked right up to all the people who came her way and soaked up their attention. Ellie would do fine in a house with or without a dog, but you wouldn’t probably adopt her as a playmate for your dog. She just wants to be with her human(s). She is very easy going with dogs, doesn’t guard her food, treats or toys. She will chase a ball and for sure she will come back to you, but it may be with or without the ball. I don't have a cat, but there was one incident with a cat at another home where she was a little snarly when she got startled by it but it did not escalate. It would be worth a test if you have a home with a cat, I really can't imagine her hurting a fly.

Ellie is really starting to do well on leash when we go for walks. I use a harness just so the little peanut doesn't slip out, but she shows no interest in running away and does not pull. She so far has not done any of her business when on leash; she tends to reserve that for the yard. I think Ellie is adjusting at my house to being at home and inside for a full work day. She is doing well hanging out with my resident dog Murphy, but I’m sure she would prefer to have her human(s) home more during the day. When I am at home, she is always by my side.

Ellie is getting spayed next week and if her health continues to be stable, she will be available for adoption.

Ellie will be at the RAGOM event this Saturday, 1/22 at PetSmart in Richfield. Come and say hello to this little gentle love bug, you will fall in love and she may be your next BFF

Here is little Ellie girl.  While in foster care in South Dakota, Ellie has not put weight on which continues to be a big concern.  Her photos are deceiving as once you see her in person, she is all bone.  Ellie is on a regimen of prescriptions for her Lyme's, seizures (none since pheno has been started!), pain management due to Lyme's and probably plain achy, and bowel (teeth are sort of a wreck too).  Ragom has now transported this lovely little girl to Minnesota to go to the U of M for testing.  We need to find out why Ellie is so thin and cannot put weight on.  This required a wonderful volunteers/transport(s) in no-so-good weather/roads (!) and putting together a 'team' of people in a short period of time to get Ellie to the Cities. (I must say a HUGE thank you to Kathy G and Amy L to work miracles to get her up there!)  It is quite remarkable how this transpired so quickly.  We do not have the resources her for Ellie here and Ragom stepped up right away and took her into some of the best vet care you can get.  Now it will be a matter of testing and processes to see what is Ellie's diagnosis. 

Ellie, despite this, is a doll.  She shows no signs at all of any issues other than being 'hungry' all the time.  Just a total love and delight. Despite these issues,  her 'coat' is actually quite nice, and yes, personality is beautiful (as you can tell from the photos), your wonderful golden girl.  Miss Ellie, I really miss you and this was hard to let you 'go' so far, but you will have the best care Ragom can provide.  I miss you Ellie.  She is just the best little golden you could wish for.  What a great 'team' effort to get this rescue golden girl the wonderful care she needs.

Here are more winter photos of Ellie.  In reviewing these, you would not realize or guess the issues we are presently facing and dealing with for Ellie.  Here is what has been diagnosed in our temp home, her status is to date:

Ellie has had seizures and is presently on Phenobarbital Since being on medication, we have thankfully not had any more Ellie is on deramaxx and doxycycline for her lyme's which she takes well in her food (always willing to eat).  Ellie is on metronidazole to help with soft stools When Ellie was brought into vet appointment last week following seizures, she has actually lost a couple  pounds is now down to 41 pounds.

The concern and mystery to find out is what is causing her weight loss and to prevent the same.  Blood panels have seemed to come back ok so we are going to remain on our current regime of the above medications, plus her prescription diet kibble of 3-4 cups a day.  We will have a re-check/update with the vet next week and get another weight.  In Ellie's love of food, giving her meds is very easy!  She is very respectful when she eats with the other resident dog; Ellie will go outside in our fenced yard and with some pacing (she loves to pace) will go potty.  She of course is being rewarded for that. Due to her being so thin, we do not keep Ellie outside long when very cold out.  Ellie has great manners and is always the 'last one' inside the door.  At stated earlier, Ellie will pace until all is quiet and she will eventually lay down and relax. 

She is quiet all night and we keep her baby gated.  We are still 'learning' our name and of course, is very food oriented for new commands/behaviors.  She will drool slightly when somewhat stressed or excited.  Her coat is very nice which is hard to believe considering her past (that we know of) and being a stray for sometime, no or poor diet and no shelter.  We believe Ellie was actually on her own longer than we originally thought...many weeks.  Ellie loves and enjoys people, kids and lots of pets.  Ellie totally ignores the 3 resident cats.   We are praying for a speedy recovery for Miss Ellie which will taketime, patience and perhaps more of finding out perhaps what she does 'not' have.  We are so very thankful she is in Ragom's care now, not to be dumped/stray again and get the medical attention and love she needs.

Here are yes, more photos, of Miss Ellie with FM (temp), self and FD  (and gosh, do we love to see if there is food around!)  Please remember this is not long after she was in our care as foster.  Again, it does not whatsoever, show how incredibly thin she truly is.  Her waist is only 16” tops.  But oh gosh, that personality and just being a Ragom golden!  Wow…
