An Open Letter to Santa Claus

Dear Santa,

My name is Happy and I am a new member of the RAGOM family as of November 21st.  I hope this letter finds you at the North Pole in time for this Christmas because it is my first Christmas and I don't want to miss out on any of the toys you are planning to bring me. Also, I have had a change of address but the mail carrier would not let me fill out one of those cards.  (Maybe you should give him a lump of coal in his stocking, just a thought.)

Let me tell you about myself so you can get an idea of who I am and what I would like this year.

I was born on the 4th of July so apparently the whole country celebrated my birth by having lots of parades and fireworks.  I was told they were spectacular in many parts of the country but I was just too young to notice.  I was busy learning how to work the milk machine so my tummy would be happy.  Before coming into RAGOM's care, I spent my life outdoors, but am now getting used to living inside a house.  I am a very smart boy as it only took me until my second night here to learn how to do a full flight of stairs. Okay, under full disclosure, I did have help the first night with FM lifting me up and putting my feet on stairs one by one, and had to watch my foster sisters for a while on day two before I got up the courage to do it.   After that first successful solo flight on day 2, I have been doing it by myself, sometimes just for fun.

In my foster house, I have two foster sisters who are just like me, a golden doodle and also RAGOM girls.  They are young, too, almost 3 years old and 16 months. So we have lots of energy to play.   I am 48 pounds and will be 5 months old on December 4th.  I have some good sized paws on me and really solid legs, so I expect to get bigger before I am 1 year old.  I am a very light blonde color and my face is so darn cute, if I do say so myself.

FM says that you have a Naughty and Nice List, so I would like to list my qualities so you can see for yourself that I belong on the Nice List.

  • I am Cute, Cute, Cute!  Take me anywhere and you are guaranteed to hear people say, "Awe, he is SOOOOO Cute!"  (FM has already proven this multiple times and places.)
  • I am playful, yet can be reserved.  I settle down nicely in the house.
  •  I am not destructive on toys.  Well, ok, I've been trying to rip the cover off a tennis ball, but have not yet succeeded. I haven't been tested with many soft stuffed toys yet as they are all put away on account of Lilly, the fabric ingester.
  •  I don't resource guard anything from people or other dogs.  I do however like to play chase, so I might steal a toy to get the game going.  I will play both roles, chaser and chasee. Doesn't matter to me!
  • I am a slow eater.   I kinda pick at my food as I feel hungry, but am learning here that walking away from my dish has a consequence.  That consequence is named Lilly, aka the Circling Shark.  She is so intent on getting my food, but will "leave it" if FM is in eyesight.  All bets are off if FM leaves the room.
  • I am a quick learner.  I have only lived in a house for a week now and have learned to do stairs, walk thru doorways, ride nicely in the car, and take treats gently.
  • I am very good about getting baths (have had 2 so far) and was really good on the grooming table getting a clean up trim yesterday.  I loved to be touched all over.
  • I get along great with all of the dogs I have met so far.
  • I have met a 3 month old infant and 4 year old without any issues.  The 4 year old also had a high energy chocolate lab which I wanted to play with, but we were told we could not wrestle in the house.  I gave her a couple of puppy play bites anyways when FM wasn't looking.
  • I enjoy car rides and just lie down and relax.  Just need to work on my vehicle entry and exit.
I walk well on a flat leash, and don't pull when walking by myself.  If my foster sisters are with me, I do pull a little cuz they like to be out front a bit and I want to keep up.  When we all walk, then it is gentle leader time and I am fine with that too.
  • I pretty much walk around the whole time wagging my tail.  Not super fast like an excited lab would do, just a calm swaying which displays my good nature.
  • I am food motivated for treats (not dog food), especially for the Natural Balance Food Roll, which FM says is like Puppy Crack cuz we will do almost anything for that stuff!
  • I have a very mellow personality.  I am still a bit shy when meeting new people or in larger crowds, but hey, it's only been one week!
  • I am correct/redirect very easily if I am doing something I am not supposed to do.
  • I don't jump up on people.  Big selling point here Santa!

I really enjoy the cold weather and would happily assist in pulling your sleigh.  Here is a picture to show you my initiative.

Oh wait, Kraelyn just told me that I am supposed to be in FRONT of the sleigh.  NOW they tell me! Sheesh. You'd think it was April Fools Day or something around here!  Well, as you can see, there is plenty of room in the sleigh for the presents.

So here are a couple of things on the Naughty List.  (I vehemently disagree with FM on this title, and prefer to call it my "Opportunities for Improvement" List.)

  1. I like to pull newspapers off of the coffee table and dish towels from counters or if they are hanging on the stove.
  2. I am a messy drinker - FM likes to call me Messy Marvin.  There is always a towel or mop near by to clear away the OSHA Water Safety Hazard I leave behind.
  3. I kennel up pretty easily, but will protest for a while (5 minutes or so) after FM walks away.  I just don't understand why I can't be with her every minute.  Seriously, will someone please explain this to me?  Does FM not understand the 17 points above?  Kraelyn has free run of the house when FM is gone and Lilly the fabric ingester is in the crate next to me and appears to be fine just hanging out.  I try to get her to protest with me, solidarity, you know, but she won't.

My current self-improvement program includes the following:

1. Potty Training:  I am making good progress here.  I keep my crate clean (except for dumping the water dish a few times).  I haven't felt the need to mark in the house, but I have had a couple of accidents.  Since I lived outside, I didn't have any restrictions or learn to have to hold it.  During the work day, my uncle comes over to play with us at lunch to give us a break.  At night, I sleep for 7 hours no problem.   I'll be able to hold it longer as I get a little older.

Note: I was surrendered from the breeder due to submissive peeing. However, FM has only noticed that once so far when I was approached really fast.  But I am told that sometimes that is a puppy thing and once I build some more confidence, it probably won't be an issue for me.

2. Puppy mouthing - I have done this a couple of times with FM when playing.  She corrects me and I stop immediately.

3. Learning Basic Commands - like Stay, Leave It.  I am pretty good at Sit.

4. Building more confidence when out on my own.  I am better with my foster sisters around or even other friendly dogs, but a bit shy when solo.

So Santa, you see here that mathematically, the stuff on my Nice list totally outweighs the Naughty by a factor of almost 6.  And the stuff on my Self-Improvement List clearly demonstrates my self-awareness of my strengths and weaknesses.  I am respectfully requesting a very nice Christmas with lots of toys and treats.  But most of all, I would like to find my forever family.   And if you could bring my foster sisters some new toys too, they would appreciate it.  You see, Lilly, the Silver Golden Doodle is really my half sister because we have the same dad.  How cool is that to be in the same house as her and have her teach me good stuff!

Thanks for reading my long letter and I hope to hear from you soon about participating in your delivery route on December 24th.  I will work on getting in front of the sleigh just as soon as we get some snow around here, which could be today!

Here's a picture of me and my half-sister Lilly snoozing.  Ok, I'm snoozing and she's thinking, oh little brother!

Happy

Happy Boy.

===========================================

FM here -- just to update you on some other Happy stuff.

He is up-to-date on all vaccinations.  He is not neutered yet.  He just lost the rest of his puppy teeth this week, except his upper right canine tooth.  The adult tooth did not come in at the right spot to push out the baby tooth.  Dr. G at VCA Bloomington would like to delay his neuter surgery for a couple of weeks to see if that baby tooth will eventually release at 6 months of age.  If it does not, they will have to pull it at the same time as his surgery so we don't have to put him under twice. She does not want to do the tooth extraction too early as it would disrupt the roots of the adult teeth that are coming in now.  So his neuter surgery would happen right after New Years Day.

He did have roundworms when he came in and is currently being treated for them with 2 doses of medicine, 14 days apart.  He will get the second dose on December 7th and will need to be retested two weeks later.

He is an exceptionally sweet puppy that needs to grow and develop some more confidence.  His half sisters Lilly and Luci came from the same breeder at 6 1/2 months old and were much more timid than Happy. They now are very well adjusted and playful dogs after having another confident dog in each of their households. He is very good natured and playful with other dogs, and has not shown any aggression.  He does not try to dominate other dogs by posturing or growling.  He will climb on his foster sister's backs when playing, and was pawing the chocolate lab he met as he wanted to play.

We will see how his personality develops in the next fews weeks prior to surgery,  He would probably enjoy another dog in his new home to play with if the dog was not overly dominant or had a lot of resource guarding issues.

Stayed tuned for more updates and photos from this wonderful little guy.

Updates

Monday, January 17, 2011

Hey Happy Fans, it is official. I have been adopted and today I moved to my new home. I have a new Mom Joanne, Dad Bill and a fur sister Bojangles to wrestle with. I also have a new name, so I will be learning to come to "Wilson".

A very special Thank You to Kraelyn and Lilly for sharing their space, toys, food, beds and love. You really helped me make the transition from an outside dog to inside dog in a short eight weeks. I much prefer the inside, especially sleeping on the bed and couches. No matter if the couch was big or small, you made room for me and allowed me to lay all over you in a big dog puppy pile so I felt safe.

Thank you RAGOM for taking me in and giving me a great start on a new life. I learned a lot about how to be a good boy and enjoy being a dog. FM says that I totally captured her heart. It was very hard to see me drive away and there were tears, but she knows I will have a great life in my new home.

Thanks for reading about me the past two months. If you are still looking for a great companion to share your life and home, please consider one of the many other dogs on these pages. They all have lots of love to give, because that is what we do very well.

Happy Boy, err, I mean, Wilson

Hi Everyone!  I sure hope that everyone had a GReat Christmas!  FM's family was out of town last weekend so we are celebrating this weekend.  I can't wait to see what other toys we get from Santa!  Here the big green stuffed bone we got on Christmas Day.  I really like carrying this around and stealing it from Lilly.

Happy

We got to go to FM's mom's for dinner Christmas Day so we got to play with Pippi and Ella, too.  In and out all evening, running and playing.  And we all behaved really well when the people were eating too.  This weekend I will get to practice behaving well as we open presents.

I have been off of leash restriction for a while now and love running like crazy in the backyard with my foster sisters.  We do a TON of wrestling, body slamming and chewing on each other.  And digging and rolling around in the snow is fun too!  Since it was so nice out today, we got to hang outside for a couple of hours. We just love the fresh air.

I will go back to the vet later this week for one last check on my incision from my surgery.  Also for one more test to make sure my issue with the roundworms is all cleared up.  Other than that, I am still working on potty training.  I ring the bell on the door A LOT (like every 45 minutes), sometimes just to get outside in the snow to play!  I have had a couple of accidents this week downstairs in the house during the day.  Sometimes I walk and pee, even after coming in from outside a half hour earlier.  FM calls it the Mark of Zorro!  I know I can hold it as I do fine in the crate and overnight, so it must be an issue with being active.  FM has me wearing a stylish bellyband, hoping that will help correct this behavior and help me learn control.

On the brighter side, I now know that I have to be calm in the crate before FM lets me out.  Lilly was a good teacher on that.  FM told me that Lilly has also gotten much better at that too since I've been around.

I am a hungry boy these days with all this activity and growing and stuff.  FM caught me in the breezeway on the couch with my head firmly enveloped in the dog food bag chowing down.  Is it my fault that she was a little late giving me my lunch?  I am just trying to be more self-sufficient and take care of myself.

Here's me and Lilly playing ball exchange.  We take turns taking it out of each other's mouth.  We kinda do that with every toy around here.

Happy

Well, time to get back to watching the football game.  However, we need a bigger couch.  There have been times where I have been asleep and have slid off the couch.  I like to sleep with my head hanging over the edge whenever possible.

Happy

Have a Great New Year everyone!

Good News Happy Fans!  My puppy canine tooth fell out during some tug-o-war games with my foster sisters, so I was able to have my snip-snip surgery last Thursday.  I am back from the body shop, and it hasn't slowed me down one little bit.  So, I am ready, willing, and able to meet candidates for my furever home.  FM said she is in no hurry to see me go cuz she loves me so much, and I just love my foster sisters too!  A big thanks to Dr. S. and the staff at Bloomington VCA for taking such good care of me for my surgery.

I am working hard on potty training and now know how to ring the sleighbells hanging on the door when I want to go outside and look for Santa.   I want to romp around in the snow, but am on leash restrictions until the weekend so my small incision will heal up right.   We got a few new toys early before Christmas to keep us entertained in the house.

Here is a picture of me and a singing Christmas dog.  I was not sure at first what was going on, but after Lilly grabbed him and ran around with him, I decided he was ok.  Though I think Lilly wants to rip his head off as she throws him around like WWE wrestling.

Happy

I have earned the right to sleep on the bed fulltime at night now and prefer that to the crate so I can stretch out.  I sleep soundly, and am not in any rush to get up in the morning; my foster sisters are in no rush either so I just roll with it.  It is much more fun to snuggle in bed for a while before getting up.

I am much better in the crate now too during the day and don't do as much caterwalling, whatever that is.  We have been getting stuffed kongs and peanut butter in bones when we are in them.   I still have to work on being calm when FM comes home after we have been in the crates for 4-5 hours.  I am just so excited to see her that I do get a bit vocal and sometimes leak a little pee. But rest assurred, I am getting much better with control as I am getting older.  I'm only 5 1/2 months now, so I hope to have this issue resolved in the near future.  I was checked for a urinary tract infection and they checked my blood for any liver and kidney issues. I passed all tests with a clean bill of health.  The Rx now is a little more time.  (They also checked my hips while I was in the shop and said all is good there too.)

Other than that, I am just hanging out here being a puppy.  I enjoy the basketful of toys and running around the house with the boots that are by the door.  Lilly has taught me how to grab one on the way in an RUN!  FM tells us "Trade You" and we give them right back and get a treat.  We have FM wrapped around out paws on this trick. FM is just so easy to get a treat out of.  Go figure!  However, I have not figured out why Kraelyn gets a treat for not stealing the boots...

A big shout-out to Tessa 10-172 for giving me a Christmas Mitten!  You Rock, Girl. I hope I get to meet you sometime.  Krae and Lilly told me how sweet and fun you were when you got to stay over here.

I hope everyone out there has a very Merry Christmas!  If you are looking for a "Happy" New Year, email your placement advisor.  I'm a very easy guy to have around and will keep you smiling with my puppy antics and adorable face.

12/04/2010

Dear Santa,

Whoo Hoo Major Snowfall today and I am 5 months old today! I am out in front of the sleigh now all hooked up and ready to go. I even packed lunch. The two reindeers, Ditzen and Basher, you sent to help show me the ropes have been busy horsing around and I can't get them to give me flying lessons. I can get up a lot of speed in the yard and get all four feet off the ground, but can't stay airborne. I'll keep working on it, but could you please send replacement reindeer? Only 20 days left for me to train.

Other than practicing pulling a sleigh, I have had a busy week here being a puppy at Camp Muddy Paws. Now we can change the name to Camp Snowy Paws for a while. FM is really glad about that!

I am still working on Potty Training and FM has noticed a slight increase in my curiousity about what is up on the counters. But I know the treat jar is up there, so can you blame me? I have a ton of fun running and playing with my foster sisters and their cousins. I am your basic playful puppy! Below is a picture of us from the other night. Four of us are RAGOM kids. I just get along with every dog I meet too, especially the really playful ones. And I am really good at understanding doggie signals when Pippi the golden lab says back up. I just move on to the next dog.

I am also working on basic commands. Stay is proving to be an issue so far. When FM backs up, I want to go to her. Maybe I am confusing Stay with Come. However, my Come is pretty good. I still do some protesting when in the crate for the first few minutes. However, for some reason, when I get quiet, FM comes back and gives me treats. I may have to change my strategy here and be quiet to see if the treat express comes more often. Also, I no longer pick at my food. The Circling Shark taught me to stay and finish my meal lest I get shorted some food. That would not be good for this growing body.

I must say that I LOVE to snuggle in bed. After the three hour play session in all the new snow today, we all took a nap with FM. Oh did that feel good! Then we headed back out for more playtime. I also think I am going through a growth spurt as I have been getting FM up after 5-6 hours. I am outgrowing the crate in the bedroom as I can stretch out like I want to. FM doesn't trust me yet for a full night outside the crate, so we get up, go outside, get a drink of water, then back to bed for a couple of hours. I do get to have those last hours on the bed with everyone else and I snuggle in and go right back to sleep and give FM a deep sigh of contentment.

The things I will need in my forever home will be a fenced yard so I can run like the wind, a doggie playmate to help me burn off some of this puppy energy, and someone committed to taking me to obedience classes and other public places for lots of socialization. I am a really smart boy and FM says that I need some structure, whatever that means. All I know is that with training, I am going to be an excellent boy that you will be able to take with you anywhere. Did I mention I love riding in the car? I now jump in all by myself.

So Santa, if you know of someone looking for that special boy this holiday season that will snuggle with them on the couch for TV time (or to gaze into a fireplace if you have one), then I am THE guy. Did I mention that I am a no-shed/low-shed model? Big selling point here...My coat is incredibly soft you won't be able to keep your hands off of me, and that's fine by me!

Tell them to contact their placement advisor today so I can meet them as soon as possible. If they are one of those people that like to shop those holiday doorbuster deals, then tell them to send an email in the wee hours of the morning. The placement advisor won't mind one bit.

Happy Boy
