Dougie 10-329

Profile

I would like to introduce you to Dougie a 10 month old GR. He was living in Anoka with lots of fur brothers and his Mom. The family will be making some life changes so Dougie came to us so that we could find him a good home. I did not put him on the site when I first got him for the reason he was very timid and scared. He was very fearful of me and it was tough to even get close. Pretty hard to adopt a pup out when you can’t get close to him! He has been with me for a month and has made HUGE strides. He now follows me everywhere. Loves to come up for scratches and pets. Cuddles on the couch and will even try to be a lap dog. The transformation has been wonderful.

At 10 months you can imagine how playful and goofy he can be. He loves balls ( what GR doesn’t – I know ) and sticks. When he is really happy, he carries something around in his mouth, his tail is waggin’ so hard it could beat a drum.  And he makes this grunting/growling noise.  He sounds kind of serious, but he is far from being serious.  He is just so HAPPY he could burst.  He loves to play with the other dogs mostly running in the yard.  He does not wrestle with resident Max – yet. He loves to chase little Duster a Maltese/poodle mix.  Not sure about how he would be with cats, although there was a cat in his previous home.

He is still got some growing to do – but I think he will be on the smaller side.  He is UTD on all his shots and has been neutered.  He did really well at the vet with his visit, but resident Max came along to lead the way.

We have not been on too many outings.  To the vet and to another Fosters for Thanksgiving (Thank you Joyce!)  He is good on car rides.  When I first brought him home it took over a half hour to get him out of the car.  Now he is good about getting in and getting out.  He does well going into a kennel.  When home without human supervision he is in a kennel.  Otherwise he sleeps in the bedroom at night.  Usually starts out in the bed and then ends up against the door.  He has his spot in the dining room in the corner that he goes to when I am in the dining room.  He sits with his back to the corner looking out into the room.  This tells me he is still somewhat guarded and wants to keep a watch out.  He barks at strange noises. That has become less frequent the longer he has had to settle in. He will need time to settle into a new home.

I think he would be somewhat scared around babies and toddlers. Older kids should be great. He should have a fenced yard or be taken out on a leash.  Another fur buddy would be really helpful as he still needs some canine companionship.  He will be scared at first with new people, but I really believe in time, that will change. He is a handsome boy with beautiful white feathering on his back legs.  The rest of the feathering is still to come.  If you are interested in meeting this sweet boy, please contact your placement adviser.

Dougie had a great time over the Christmas weekend. He went to another Fosters – Thank you Kris. He had a blast in the snow and meeting some new pals. He was a little timid when he first got there but within a couple of hours he was all settled in and part of the family.   Dougie went for walks, helped open Christmas presents (receiving some of his own) and just made himself at home.

Dougie will be going to see an ophthalmologist to have his eyes checked.  He has juvenile cataracts and it was determined that before he is adopted we want a specialist to see him. Hopefully we will find out that it is the type that does not progress.

Dougie would not have to go to a home with another dog, but I think he would benefit from having another dog to play with.; Even if it was a neighbor dog or regular trips to the doggie park.

At the other fosters home, it was determined that he does not like to go potty on a leash. That can possibly be changed but the adoptive family would have to know up front that the situation may require some very creative thinking. Luckily the other foster’s house had a deck off the upper level of the house. The steps to the yard were blocked off and he was allowed to go potty on the deck.

He has been a cuddle bug lately. Snuggling up on the couch during TV time. He won’t let me out of his sight, following me from room to room. He is the first one in the bed at night but will move to make room when told. He continues to be really good about “kenneling up”. He is quite the little thief when playing with the other dogs. He will wait patiently and sneak in to take bones or balls when the others have been distracted.

When he is sleeping he likes to sleep on his back with either one or both front legs up in the air straight out in front of him. I like to tickle his toes when he does that. Sometimes he sleeps right through it. But if I get up to leave the room, magically he is the first one off the couch to follow. You know you are loved when Dougie is around.

More pictures to come and updates to follow once he has been to see the eye doctor.
