Scar 10-286

Profile

Hey there all you pheasant hunters, my name is Scar and I am a 4 year old male pure bred Golden Retriever.  I have been professionally trained to hunt pheasants. I lived with my brother Sunny 10-285 in a very small town in South Dakota and spent most of my life in an outdoor kennel run.  I'm now living in a house with two labs and a nice lady who is teaching me what it takes to live inside.  My life has changed a lot in the past couple of weeks but I am adjusting ok, miss my brother Sunny a bit but everyone in my foster home is nice and is helping me with all the changes in my life.  I love, love, love to retrieve tennis balls.  I like all the dogs and humans I've met so far and am getting used to taking walks on a leash.  Boy, there sure is a lot going on in this city, cars, bikes, noisy trucks and so many new smells.  It's a lot to take in but with the help of my foster brother and sister I'm figuring it all out.  Hey, do you know that people let dogs sleep on couches and in the bed, wow, that sure is a lot nicer than sleeping outside on the hard ground.  I think I could get used to this new Golden life that I've found....could that new life be with you?  I'll let foster mom fill you in on all my details as this computer thing is new and I have really big feet so trying to use a keyboard is not too easy for me.

Foster mom here,  Scar, or as I've been calling him Starr, is one handsome, sweet dude.  He is a beautiful blond boy who has the most unique high lites in his coat....kind of looks like someone was trying out their beautician skills on him.  This guy is the complete package, fantastic looks and an equally fantastic personality.  He is calm and mellow in the house, a surprise since I don't think he had been in a house before he arrived at my home late last week.  He loves, loves, loves to retrieve a tennis ball and brings the ball back to you and gives it up for another toss.  He walks like a dream on a flat collar, stops when you stop and continues on when you continue.  I'm hoping he can teach my residents some better leash manners while he is with me.  Starr was professionally trained to hunt pheasants and would love to find a forever home that can continue to take him hunting.  He weighs 76 pounds but could gain another 5 to 8 pounds to be at his ideal weight.  He checked out fine at the vet, has a minor skin infection mostly between the pads on his front feet and is on antibiotics to clear that up.  Starr will be neutered on Friday and will then be ready to start looking for his forever family.  Starr also met several fosters this week and I'm happy to announce he is foster tested and approved.  Starr wants to thank the following folks for helping him so far:  Mari and Christi for meeting him and for their foster approval; Devon for taking such beautiful photos, and Rona, Kathy and John in South Dakota for all your care and help.

Starr's needs in his forever home are pretty simple.  He needs a patient, understanding home that will continue to help him learn what it takes to live inside and adjust to life in a town of more than 250 people.  He does not need another dog or a fenced yard and should not go to a home with toddlers as he is still learning not to jump on people....don't want him to knock over a small child.  He does not like cats, (per previous owner) but is fine with dogs ranging from 20 pounds to 90 pounds.  He is housebroken, only lifted his leg a couple of times the first night he was with me.  He has had no accidents in the past 4 days.  Right now he is making up for the lack of human interaction and attention during his first 4 years and is pretty Velcro.  He has not chewed on anything, does not counter surf and has no interest in the garbage or other inappropriate items.  Starr would really love to find a family that can continue to take him pheasant hunting, how fun will it be to have this guy in your home.  Not only will he be a great family dog, he will also be able to bring home the bacon...(pheasants).  Please contact your placement adviser if Starr sounds like the guy for you.

Starr will make his first public debut on Saturday the 16th at the Plymouth Petsmart.  We plan to be there from 11 am to 1 pm so please stop by to meet this very handsome boy.

Updates

Saturday, October 16, 2010

Hey everyone, it's me Starr (aka Scar).  Foster mom says it's time to send in an update on what I've been up to this past week.  I've been pretty busy meeting people, going places and doing lots of new stuff.  I've been a really good boy so far and am enjoying my time here with foster mom, Rocco and Jimmie. Everyday foster mom starts off our days with a really nice, long walk.  She says I walk so nice on a leash, and if I have to say so myself, I do walk better than the resident labs.  All of this city stuff is new to me but I'm getting used life in the big city with all its noise and stuff.  I've met many people and dogs of all sizes and ages and I get along fine with everyone.  This week I met a very special man who I really like.  Guess what, he is going to be my forever dad!!  Yup, that's right, I've been adopted.  Foster mom says I get to stay here for a few more days as my new dad will have time off from his work later this week and will take me home then.  He wants to have time for us to bond before he has to leave me home while he goes to work.  I get to be the only dog and he is my only human, so it's going to be us two single guys living together....how cool is that...I get all the attention and love. Can you say man cave?  While I will miss my brother Sunny 10-285, I am happy to be an only dog and even better my dad's sister has two Golden's (girls) that I get to hang out with...so I get the best of both worlds.  I'm going to go and take a nap as I spent my morning at PetSmart attending a RAGOM education event.  I'll let foster mom finish telling you about my week and my new dad.  Later gator.

Foster mom here:  Yes, it is true, Starr, nicknamed Mr Sweetness at my house, has been adopted by a wonderful man who used to foster for RAGOM and had adopted a mother and daughter from RAGOM...he was a foster failure (that's when foster parents keep the dogs they foster...they really don't fail anything).  He had to say goodbye to the older dog a few years ago and had to say goodbye to his last Golden in August.  Needless to say his house has been very empty without 4 paws to keep him company so Starr will fill that void and then some.  While his new dad no longer pheasant hunts, Starr will still have plenty of retriever time and will go to the various dog parks nearly everyday.  I have no doubt that Starr will be spoiled as his dad replied when asked about allowing dogs on the furniture that he "has a $1000 dog bed at home....the leather couch".  I think that sealed the deal for Starr as he loves the couch almost as much as playing with a tennis ball....only thing better would be if he could play fetch on the couch!!

Besides meeting his new dad, Starr visited several dog food stores in search of a dog food that he likes.....not a big eater this guy.  We finally found some really smelly canned food that he seems to like, so I'm hoping he will continue to eat and that his new dad can figure out what he likes.  His new dad said if he can not find a kibble that Starr likes, he will cook for him, can you say lucky?  Starr also visited the vet this week for his neuter surgery and had a broken tooth pulled.  Poor boy, he was pretty out of it when I brought him home, but thanks to a good friend who helped him by doing some healing touch and aromatherapy, he is recovering nicely.  He has ignored his incision, so no cone head for this boy and other than a restless first night one would never know he had surgery.  Now comes the difficult part, keeping him quiet.  I've had to pick up the tennis balls from outside otherwise he tries to get me to toss them for him...no such luck for a week or so.  He also has to stay dry for 2 weeks, so I had to put away the kiddie pool, sorry guys.

Starr has been an absolute delight to foster and I know he will bring much happiness and joy to his new dad.  I will send a final update once Mr Sweetness has left for his new home.  For now enjoy the photos of Starr with his brother Sunny 10-285 (black & white collar) and my resident Rocco on the day I picked up the boys from South Dakota and Starr with his favorite toy, a tennis ball.
