Hank 10-240

Hello World! I'm Hank! My birthday is August 7, 2010. Yep! I'm working on my second day of freedom after the great escape from my mom, Aruba 10-201!  'Course, I don't want to get too far away from her, because she's got all the good stuff... Warm fur, the built-in-wash cloth, and of course, she's my milk supplier!

I'm a little smaller than my brother Ernie 10-241 and my sister Ruby 10-242. Of course, Ruby has been sitting on top of me for the last couple of months, and, well... to put it delicately, she's a little plump! I mean, really, 16 1/4 ounces at birth? That must be a record or something! I was a petite (but manly) 14 3/8 ounces, a more appropriate size if I do say so myself! That girl, and Ernie both seem to think bigger is better, but I'm telling you, in this box, bigger is just bossier! Those two keep trying to knock me off my spot at the milk machine. Sometimes I even let them do it, so FM (or is that Foster Grandma?) helps me find a good spot when the other two are sleeping sometimes! He he... I'm training her already!

If you think a boy like me might be your style, let placement know! I'll be ready to go once the milk machine breaks down (nothing lasts forever, right?) and I get my parts all fixed. FM is thinking maybe mid-October!

From Hank’s forever family:

We are so thrilled to have Hank with us. Our family feels complete! Here are some pictures of Hank with his new fur-brother Sunny (also a RAGOM boy!).

Sunday, November 28, 2010

Hidey ho Hank fans! It’s been an interesting week around here. FM started calling me Hoover which she said was accurate thanks to my penchant for picking up anything that is on the floor. I think that is just silly. Number one, I’m a puppy! Number two, I’m a retriever! Number three, Hank is just fine, thank you. Fortunately, we got that straightened out right before my holiday… Hanksgiving. Who knew there was a special day for everyone to give thanks for Hanks? I don’t want to brag or anything, but I hear a lot of people celebrated. I bet you did, did’n’cha? Uhh huh… You know you did!

As if that weren’t enough action, the next day mom told me a special family was coming to meet me. She said I needed to get prettied up, so FD gave me a bath. I didn’t see too much difference, but it made her happy and you know what FD says, “Happy wife, happy life.” Then things got ugly. She decided I needed a little nail trim. Well, guess what? My nails are black so it’s hard to tell whether I do or not. Guess what else, she was wrong about three – count ‘em 1, 2, 3 – nails that did not need her brand of help. She had to call my foster Uncle (and vet) off the roof of his house where he was hanging Christmas lights to get the styptic pencils from his office to fix me up! It didn’t bother me too much, but FM didn’t seem too happy about it. Serves her right, I say. She’s old enough to know better. My foster uncle must think so too, because he said she “owed him” several times right out loud for everyone to hear with a smug smile on his face. FM accused him of enjoying her troubles and he just laughed and nodded. She called him a stinker which must be a term of endearment, because she calls me that all the time! I like my uncle.

And guess who else I like? The family that came to meet me, and their two little two-leggers, and their RAGOM four-legger. They were awesome! Even better, they liked me too. They liked me so much, they wanted to be my forever family! I bet they don’t make dogs get baths and nail trims… So, I said yes! I’m gonna miss my foster family, ‘specially my foster brothers (both furry and non-furry), but they taught me all I need to know to be a great golden boy. And here’s the really cool thing… I’m not just Hank anymore, now I’m Hank K.! I have my very own last name!

I want to send big slurpy puppy kisses and wags to everyone from RAGOM who helped my mom Aruba, Ernie, Ruby and me. And, a special thank you to everyone who beamed good wishes my way when I wasn’t feeling too good. You guys really are the best.

Love,

Hank K.

Hi All! It’s ME, Hank! I am back from my visit to the shop and my fix, and you will not believe what they sent me home with. Check out my picture. That’s right -- A dress. FD calls it a cape to try and make me feel better, but I think we both know the truth. I keep trying to frown to let FM know this is not acceptable, but no matter how hard I frown on the inside it still seems to look like a smile on the outside. Ughh. Genetics. Speaking of genetics, I like to carry the front of my dress in my mouth (you probably don’t know any other retrievers who like to carry things). FM says it makes me look like a lady holding her skirts up so she doesn’t trip. I think that’s just silly, ‘cause it’s obvious I look like a boy dog trying to break outta the girl’s dress someone stuffed me into. And guess what? Twice now I have done it! The last time I was extra sneaky because I had my head down over my food dish so it looked like I was eating, and then when I stood up? Whoops! The dress was on the food dish instead of me!

This morning I got invited into bed to struggle. I climbed up there, grabbed my dress in my teeth, gave it my best big-boy growl and started head whipping it back and forth. It felt sooo good to take my frustration out on that thing! Just when I got rockin’ and rollin’ FM grabs me and says in her best stop-it-right-now voice, “Hank. I said sNuggle, not sTruggle.” That may be what she said, but it was not what I heard. Unfortunately, I did not understand the second time either and then I got invited back off the bed and onto the floor.

FM says I am at that puppy stage where I am really rough and have a hard time settling down. My teeth are still really sharp and it hurts people when I forget that I am not supposed to bite down on them. I especially like anything that reminds me of the tail of my best fur-bottomed friend, Archie, and that includes the long hair of my three non-fur-bottomed foster girl cousins (oops!). I am learning, though, and I will get it figured out with time (mine) and patience (FM’s)

My foster grandma has requested that we send in a picture that does “justice” to my curls – whatever that means. She thinks they are “darling” (I do know what that means… treats and ear scratches!) and no one could possibly resist them. Can you resist them? Can you?

Check out my new video!

Hi guys! It’s me Hank! Wow have things been busy around here. It seems like we spend all day long going in and out, in and out. The good news is I get treats every time I do my business outside. FM says I am an excellent sitter and I am learning to lay down when she tells me to. For some reason I think I need to stand up from my sit before I lay down… Don’t really know what that’s about, but FM says that as long as I end up in the right place everything is good for now. On the down side, I have what FM calls my silly curls. I am beginning to think they are silly, because for some reason when people see them they think I am a girl. Can you believe it? You would think one look at my manly physique and there would be no question. Take that McConaughey guy… He’s got all sorts of curls and I don’t hear anyone mistaking him for a lady.

A couple of times a week I get to go to Foster Grandma’s house. I love that because there are all sorts of people to give me attention, but also because former RAGOM girl, Tessa 10-172 lives there. FM says Tessa is a puppy in a big dog body and I think that is awesome because it means she likes to play HARD! Together we bite the air (sometimes we miss and bite each other, but we don’t mind ‘cause it is all part of our game), race in circles and fight over toys. Even though she is tall, she is only about 50 lbs, so I can take ‘er! We are laying still in our picture, but FM says to tell you that was a short pause and it happened about two hours after we arrived!

In other news, I got to go visit my Foster Uncle at his office this week. They gave me a couple of big pokes while I was there, but I didn’t mind at all. My Uncle took a good look at me and said my structure appeared normal, whatever that means. FM says it means my head doesn’t look as funny as it used to. I can’t believe these people seem to be more interested in looks than substance… but, whatever. Because of that, he said they can try and fix me now and see how it goes. I don’t’ really know what they are fixing, but if they could get rid of the curls while they do it, that would be good.

Whew!

Question: What kind of person would think it was relaxing to have an un-potty trained puppy scampering around the house, rough housing and begging for attention? Answer: The kind of person who until two days ago had three un-potty trained puppies scampering around the house, rough housing and begging for attention!

With Ernie (now Huxley) and Ruby off to their forever homes, little Hank is ready for some one-on-one attention from the foster pack! It’s time to start working on puppy manners and potty training! Aside from a long overnight with some nasty loose stools, he has kept his crate sparkling clean and dry for most of the last two days. The vet gave us some meds to help with the diarrhea problem, so hopefully tonight will be more restful for all of us.

Just like his mommy, Hank is people focused and loves to be loved. He does a great job of sitting to get treats and attention. We got a few Hank-sized tennis balls the other day and he is carrying them around like a champ. He is starting to be able to follow the ball when I release it, and sometimes he even brings it back! Go Hank! He and resident fur-butt Archie are a special pair. Archie is a big lug and Hank a little squirt, but they have a great time playing together. I love to watch Archie let Hank “win” when they are playing tug! It’s pretty funny to watch a 100 lb dog pretend to be dragged around the room by a 20 pounder!

We have gotten some great updates on the pack and are thrilled to know that Ruby (Aruba) is up to walk/running 3 miles with her new mom, little Ruby is a model with her own Facebook portfolio (eerrr… photo album), and Huxley (Ernie) is snoozing on the job while he is work with his new dad. Hank is ready to have some adventures of his own, so we will keep you posted!

Sunday, October 17, 2010

Whew, it’s been busy around here as you can see from the picture of me in my crate!

So, let me tell you about a couple of things that have been goin’ on. First, and most important, my momma, ‘Ruba, found her forever home. I’m kinda sad without her ‘cause she treated me pretty special… She served great beverages and she liked to play with me, too. I miss her, but she taught me all I need to know to be a big boy, so I told her not to worry about me. I’m gonna be ok.

As you can see from my pics, it’s been a little wet lately.

If I’m not in the bathtub, FM is shoving me out in the rain so I “get accustomed to it”. I don’t really know what that means, but I like the rain just fine ‘cause even though I’m not much for math, it’s a part of one of my favorite equations. Rain + Dirt = Mud.

As if that wasn’t fun enough, I got to go to two special events today. First I went downtown to cheer on FD as he did a half marathon. Get this, I am so popular and loveable that people were stopping in the middle of their marathon runs to say hi to me! Seriously! Even better, there was someone there called a reporter and she musta thought I was one of the best spectators, because she took some pictures of me. FM says we will watch the newspaper and see if I show up in there. If I do, she’ll let you know!

After that it was off to the Iowa Pet Expo. I manned the RAGOM booth with my foster brothers and foster fur-butt, Archie. We met some great RAGOM folks and tons of other people and dogs. Mostly I just hung out in my little portable crate and snoozed because cheering on marathon runners is hard work!

Hi everyone! FM here. First off, Hank is doing great! He continues to be seizure free and he has almost completely caught up to his sibs in size. This morning Ernie was 16 pounds, Ruby 15, and Hank an outstanding 14.5! Go Hank! He continues to play less and sleep more than the other two, but it’s not as noticeable as it was previously. In addition, he, along with the other dogs, is learning how to sit and come and at this point, he earns the “most likely to sit when asked” award…

Think you are up for anything? Take three 8-week old puppies and three teens/pre-teens to Petco for an outing. The puppies got loved-up by everyone in the store and got to pick a toy to bring home. Ernie and Hank picked macho toys, a stuffed dino and dragon respectively, and then whispered and snickered when they saw Ruby had picked a rubber chicken. No accounting for taste, huh? Of course, Ruby got the last laugh when she watched Hank create a “cleanup in aisle 9”. Not only did he provide some aromatic entertainment for everyone, he climbed onto the grate under our cart to do it! Thanks Hank {grin}. You keep my life interesting.

Check out some puppy playtime in the yard.

Well, the plumber said he didn’t have any experience with this kind of pipe, so it’s officially GYOB around here (get your own beverage). FM sets down the big red dish full of water and all of us get a drink, but to tell you the truth, it just isn’t the same. I show my disdain for it by walking through and sleeping in the bowl. FM says that isn’t too funny when it is full, but I don’t worry about that. I especially like to have one of my ears flopped in there while I’m snoozing. I don’t want to be too predictable, though, so today I’m communing with my food dish rather than soaking in the water.

The good news is I am now big enough to wear my green collar which my foster family tells me is fetching. I am working on an adolescent eye-roll to use on them when they think they are being funny, but I haven’t perfected it yet. The bad news is Ernie and Ruby have one more thing they can use to drag me around. Most of the time when they do their WWE wrestling impersonation, I just try and get out of the way. I have to say, though, Ernie does bear a striking resemblance to a young Hulk Hogan with his blonde hair and brutish body. And Ruby? Well, she’s more the American Gladiator type… Those are some intense chicks!

Wednesday, September 22, 2010

Hi guys! FM says everyone was asking about me at Goldzilla! I must be pretty cute to get all that attention, huh? FM says I have some “issues” but as far as I can tell, everything is fine. I spent the night at the vet last week so they could poke me and take some stuff to test. They didn’t find out much, because my liver test was normal. FM says now we just watch and wait as long as I am doing ok, and you know what? I think I’m doing great! She says I had some seizures, but I don’t remember them at all, so they don’t bother me too much.

You know what does bother me though? Ernie and Ruby. Ernie has some kind of obsession with my tail. He likes to grab on and get dragged around the puppy zone. I make lots of noise to let everyone know I am not ok with that, but no one seems to care. Especially Ernie! And Ruby, well, it’s the same-old, same-old. I’m lucky I can get a couple of bites of kibble with her body checking me away from the food dish. The good news is, according to FM’s scale, I am catching up with the bigger kids! I am over 7 pounds now and they are only 10! Just a couple of weeks ago, I was only half their size. So, Ruby better watch out, because just when she thinks it’s safe, I’m-a-comin’ for her!

On the down side, I told FM it’s time to call a plumber, because the milk machine isn’t working the way it should. It’s still free and everything, but not much comes out. I think maybe a pipe is clogged. FM didn’t seem too worried about it, but then again she’s not missing lunch!

When you have a minute, watch the video of us playing with our foster fur-brother, Archie! We love him!

After talking with the neurologist, we decided that we would do a simple blood test on Hank to assess his liver function. He will fast overnight and then have a blood draw early in the morning, and a second blood draw two hours after eating. The neurologist suggested the two most likely causes for Hank’s seizures are liver function and, as mentioned previously, hydrocephalus. While both have a poor outcome, knowing what Hank is suffering from will help us make sound medical decisions for him moving forward.

While Hank is facing a difficult future, he is blessed to live a dog’s life – in the moment! He is running and playing, eating and drinking, sleeping and snuggling with his mates. Each day he recaptures my heart with his puppy love.

Check out the picture of him sound asleep in the arms of his Foster Brother, and watch him roughhousing with resident Archie in the latest puppy video!

Adorable. Wiggly. Loveable. Puppy.

Definitely good words for Hank.

Possible hydrocephalus. Likely resulting from congenital defect. Increasing neurological damage. Severe cases almost uniformly fatal.

No. Not good words for Hank. Not good for him… Not good for the people who love him… Not good for the family waiting patiently to give him a forever home… Not good at all.

Hank, like the other puppies, had his first official vet check yesterday. Unlike the other puppies, in his case there is reason for concern. Hank’s vet considers Hank to be “suspicious” for hydrocephalus.

Of concern:

  • Hank has been a poor-doer from the start. While he has continued to gain weight, he is literally half the size of his two litter mates (3lbs as compared to 6 lbs). He also looks skinny and wiry instead of fat and happy.
  • He does not look like his siblings. His head is very round and there is a lot of space between his eyes and the top of his head… Essentially he has a “domed” skull. I had commented that he almost looked like he was a different breed, and both vets independently made similar statements.
  • Together, along with some behavior that is different from his siblings, these issues cause significant suspicion that there may be a problem

Time will tell:

  • If he has hydrocephalus, the vet would expect him to begin showing symptoms sometime in the next 3 or 4 months, possibly much earlier
  • At the vet’s suggestion, we will watch for neurologic symptoms caused by increased pressure inside the skull including dullness, excessive sleepiness, funny gait, balance issues, etc. which will help them determine an appropriate diagnosis
  • If Hank is suffering from this problem the prognosis is grim. The condition would likely either be fatal, or result in euthanasia due to uncontrollable neurologic symptoms in a matter of weeks or months.
  • At this time, the vet cannot say definitively that Hank has a congenital defect, only that his current symptoms are of significant concern. It is possible Hank will progress without neurologic issues.
  • As a result, RAGOM will not adopt Hank out unless/until his vet can say with confidence he is not suffering from hydrocephalus, likely several months from now at the earliest. Until a conclusion can be drawn one way or the other, Hank will remain in foster care.

So, what can you do? Lift him up with your good wishes. Be thankful that he is in the loving arms of RAGOM volunteers instead of living in the filthy shed where he was conceived. Hope that he is simply an adorable, goofy-looking runt going through an awkward phase, and he will move on to a great golden life. Consider helping RAGOM with the cost of this special boy’s care by sponsoring Hank or making a donation in any amount.

As I explained to my youngest son, our job as his foster family hasn’t changed! We are going to give Hank the safe, caring home he deserves. We are going to love him up, savor his puppy breath and laugh at his silly antics. And, no matter the end result, we are going to remember the words from a favorite family song and love the time we have to share.

“If we ignore the moment, we commit the greatest crime. We got to learn to love the time.”
– David M. Bailey from the song Love the Time

Hey guys! It's the Hankster from Hank and the Tanks! From that name you would think we were a rock 'n roll band, but really we're just puppies. FM says I'm a live-wire though, and I think it means I have a special personality. She also says I'm a lean, mean eatin' machine. I love this new stuff I'm getting called mush! It looks so good, and smells so good, and tastes soooo good... I just want to slather it all over myself because I can't get enough of it! So, I do! Then my Ma gets out the built-in washcloth and cleans me up before I get stuff everywhere. Ok... Bossy Ruby is sticking her nose in and saying I don't get cleaned up before I get stuff everywhere, I get stuff everywhere before I get cleaned up. She's kinda picky about the details... ugh. Little sisters.

There is something else special about me, too. FM hasn't mentioned it until now, because she keeps telling me it will probably go away as I get older, but I think she's starting to wonder. My brother and sister are just plain old light golden and medium golden, but not me! I am dark golden, and.... wait for it.... I have white blaze over my chest between my front legs! How cool is that! It's like I'm permanently marked with a "special" sticker! Wanna see it??? You know you do! Maybe we can get together sometime!

Check out the picture of me with resident doggie Archie McGee! He's pretty big, but I think I can take him! Then, watch a new video of me.

Hi Everyone!

The puppies are too busy to do their own update this week, so I'll let you know what they are up to. The pups (or Hank and the Tanks as we like to call them) have all opened their eyes and are walking now. I think they are starting to hear sounds as well, but I haven't seen them "startle" to a loud noise yet. Each day we work with them to provide gentle stimulation and to get them used to being handled. We hold them away from our bodies, lay them on their backs on our hands and hold them upside down. They also get some toe tickles, a chance to stand on a cold, wet washcloth and a few minutes to walk around on a new surface. We will begin exposing them to different noises starting this week, so hopefully when they find their forever homes, they aren't scared of the coffee grinder or the garbage truck, etc.

Our littlest guy, Hank (I'm not small, I'm fuel-efficient) has some serious ups -- not jumps, but climbing skills. If you cradle him by your tummy, the next thing you know he has managed to scamper his way up to your shoulder. He wiggles when he is being carried, and I'm beginning to suspect he may be a high-energy dog. He weighs just over two pounds while the others are heading for four. He is steadily gaining weight at this point, but still looks like a mini-me of Ruby. I talked with the vet and asked about whether Hank's runt status was likely permanent, and he indicated it would be hard to tell either way. He did say that if he is still littler than his sibs at 4-5 months, then he is likely to remain on the smaller side. Of course, that's not going to help us much with our decision-making, because this guy is going to have a home waaaaay before then!

Check out some pics of Hank being his cute little self! If you have time, check out the new puppy video.

So, here's the thing about me. I am small but mighty. Those other guys keep trying to push me around, but I'm not having any of it! I've learned to hang on to my milk spigot even when Ruby and Ernie lay on me, burrow under my nose, and in any other way try to take what is rightfully mine. Ruby mutters something about "the quick and the hungry", but I think that's just her way of justifying her unlady-like snarfing. Anyway, my strategy is working because I'm gaining a little weight -- I'm up to almost 21 oz total today! 'Course FM says she would be more comfortable if I was gaining a little faster, but I like doing things my own way.

And, get this! My mom, Aruba, keeps setting me up with private dining! She picks me up by my head, or my leg, or whatever part is handy, and takes me out of the box to eat by myself. I play along and squeal like crazy when she picks me up so the other two don't get wind that they are missing out on something good. Then I settle in with my personal barista for my favorite beverage, a venti no-foam latte (sans espresso of course!). That drink place -- yup, you know the one -- has nothin' on my mom!

Check out the video of me and my sibs!
