Black Lab (Baxter 10-227)

Profile

Welcome to Ragom Baxter 10-227!! Baxter came all the way from South Dakota with Sunny 10-225 and Try 10-228.  Thank you to everyone that helped transport him to us!  Baxter was taken away from his previous home because the living conditions were so bad, but you wouldn't know it from Baxter's attitude.

He is approximately a 7 month old black lab mix around 40 lbs. The shelter who took him in did a great job vetting him, and getting him ready to come to us.  Baxter is very much a puppy with tons of puppy energy, but is an amazing listener.  If he gets anything a puppy shouldn't (socks, paper etc.), all you have to say is no in a calm voice and he drops it then and there.  Baxter and my golden resident dog Nova get along terrificly.  They play constantly together.

I also think Baxter may have some golden in him.  Even though he doesn't look it at all he has a golden personality.  He just LOVES his people.  If anyone sits on a couch, Baxter is right next to you kissing you and cuddling with you the whole while.

His puppy energy does run out, and he loves to take naps on your lap.  We just had our first night together, and Baxter did TERRIFIC in the crate!  We put him in and he cried for probably 30 seconds and then off to sleep for the ENTIRE night!  It was fabulous!

We are working on potty training with Baxter as well and he does a wonderful job going potty and doing his business immediately when we go outside.

We will continue loving this puppy, and getting him ready for his forever home.  If you are interested in this sweetheart, please contact your placement advisor!

A few days ago, FM let me sleep with her in bed, when Foster Dad came to bed though he put me in my kennel. I don't mind sleeping in my kennel, but I would prefer sleeping on the comfy bed with FM. So instead of going into my kennel nicely, I took off running into the living room and jumped on the couch before FD could get me. He came out and looked at me and I looked back with my really cute puppy eyes and gave a big sigh, I knew I was going to lose this battle, but I tried!! After a few more nights in the kennel, FM AND FD let me sleep wherever I wanted to, guess where I chose.... my Kennel!!! It is nice and cozy after all, but a few nights I like to sleep on the bed too! I wake up when I hear this loud beeping noise or when music starts blaring.

I give FM and FD kisses and then head to the back door, where I get to go out and do my business. I love to say hi to Nova my friend too, if she is laying on the floor I sometimes lay down right beside her while I wait for FM and FD. FM also takes me to this place where there are a ton of dogs, she calls it the Dog park. I LOVE IT!! I run up to every dog and just want to play, play, play! I'm still not sure about the wavy blue stuff that moves and Nova goes swimming in, I just like to watch. I love going on walks, if I see a butterfly, I try and catch it, I try and catch lots of things, today I tried to catch a bird...it didn't work so well, it flew up into the sky.

I just love this Golden life I have now, but would really like to find my forever family, FM says it will hopefully come soon!

We are puppysitting for Baxter for four days, and everyone in the house is in love with him!  He is the perfect puppy age as he has a lot of love and playfulness in him, but he is a good listener and isn't proving to be destructive.  He handled nights in the crate great.  He walks quite well for a puppy, but does best with a gentle leader.  He loved to play with other dogs visiting the house.  And he just wants to be where the people are and give lots of kisses!  My daughter spent some time training him, and he was so eager to cooperate with little treats on hand.  He already sits so well, rode beautifully in the car, and was wonderful with the kids - ages 6, 8, and 10.  He may not look like a Golden, but he might as well be one!

Well, we have had Baxter for over a week now and we are completely accident free!! We were actually accident free after the second day he was with us! We are still working on him "showing/telling" us he needs to go out, but I think that will come with time.

He also does a terrific job going in the crate at night and during the day when we are away! When we get home from work he gets super excited and tries to claw his way out of the kennel, so we will be working on that as well. Once he is out of the kennel and finished with his business outside, he crawls right onto our lap and makes crying noises as we pet him. He just loves to be loved!!!

We continue on working with the gentle leader when we go for walks. Baxter is still not a huge fan of the leader, but is getting used to it.

I take the dogs to a park that has a slow river every day. The first day we went, Baxter had no clue what that blue stuff was and approached the river slowly. Once he got his paws wet, he picked up his feet like he was prancing and then would carefully place his foot in the water.  It was pretty cute to watch.  Each day he gets a little braver with the water, but still does not go swimming.  When we gave him a bath he really did NOT like that, so I am wondering if whatever other breed he is mixed with must not like the water.

We are leaving town for the weekend and have a RAGOM puppysitter for Baxter. I am excited to see how he does in a home without any other dogs, and with children. I will let you know how his mini vacation went once we get back!!  Here are a bunch of cute pictures of Baxter and our resident golden Nova!!
