I've decided that from now on the big red guy will be known as Dodger.................no matter what it says anywhere else. It's what we call him and he seems to answer to it. So with that settled let's talk about his last couple days and nights. He and Colby 10-186 spent the first couple nights baby gated in the kitchen/hall/laundry area. No accidents per se, just the little dribble thing when I came down in the a.m. Last night I couldn't bear one more night of listening to him whine when I went to bed, so I brought the boys with me. He found a dog bed right next to my side of the bed, layed down and didn't move during the night. We all woke up more rested. He is so sweet, knows come, sit, down and takes treats pretty nicely, but does try to get the other guy's too. His appetite is good and takes his pills in peanut butter.
He met the neighbor lab, Lake, without problems. Lake has been around all my fosters and is submissive to new dogs, which makes it easy for him to come over. The meet 'n greet wasn't set up, Lake just sorta came over with his owner and got in the kitchen and the screen was open and the boys all came in. So all considered it went very well.
Though Dodger is big, he's solid at 88lbs. As you can tell from the pictures he's a big guy and loves his human attention. When I got home tonight he was so excited and mouthy, so I finally just yelled 'OUCH' when he grabbed my hand a couple times and he's been much better. Speaking of home coming, I got a nice surprise. I left for work and my husband was home til noon and he put up the baby gate before he left. When I got home I opened the door and called the dogs and the only one who came was Jax, my cocker. I could hear Dodger and Colby barking but they didn't come. Dodger had managed to get the baby gate moved enough so they could get to the other side and spent the day in the family room and upstairs hall. I quickly checked and nothing was chewed, moved nor any 'accidents'. Whew!! What good boys.
While Dodger wants attention and loves to give the golden paw or flip your hand, if you tell him to lay down he will. He's just a big lug, sweet as can be, but because of his size and being so mouthy yet, a home with small children would not be a good fit. I have no idea of his recall if he got loose, but to be honest he goes out and if I leave them out on the deck he lays by the door waiting to come in. I wonder if maybe he spent a lot of time indoors with his owner, or too much time outdoors without him. This weekend while we were out and on the deck he was content to be with us, and loved getting attention from TM (the man aka my hubby) when he took a break from yard work.
This guy was so good about being brushed but not so fond of the bath. We have hot/cold water in our garage so was able to bathe them out on the patio, with a nice rain rinse for all of us:) After they all played in the garage as we took the cars out so they had some place to run and play on Sunday with all the rain. It can be a long day with 3 dogs and no yard time.
One of the things that both Dodger and Colby do is growl at one another for various reasons. If one has a toy and the other comes near they growl. More so Colby than Dodger. But if Dodger is laying by the couch and Colby comes over to lay by him, Dodger sometimes will growl at him. Interestingly enough he doesn't growl at Jax.........who bugs everybody!! He also is not big on trying to take a toy away from the other dogs. He's not really interested in the cats per se, but Jax likes to chase the cats and has Colby going now, and Dodger just joins in. If you had dog savvy cat(s) it would probably be ok. I did bring Coulter my friendly boy out and sat him on my lap and let the dogs sniff and lick and Coulter just rubbed his face against them. I think it's more the running off than anything else.
While this boy has some manners and is a gentle soul, he and his human would do well bonding via obedience school. I don't get the feeling Dodger has much in the way of issues with other dogs. I think he could be any only dog or join a family with a fur sibling. It would depend on the other dog. So, if you are an approved applicant and think this big handsome guy would be a good fit and addition to your home and family, contact your placement advisor.
Stayed tuned for more on the Big Red Guy.
