Nina 10-142

Profile

Nina is an approximately 4 year old female Golden Retriever. Nina was surrendered to RAGOM along with 3 other Golden Retrievers (Libby 10-139, Doc 10-140, and Sally 10-141) from a South Dakota breeder who was getting out of the dog business. Nina and Doc were transported together to the cities on the 16th (Thanks to Rona D. and the transporters, and Jeanine M who temp fostered Nina for a day!).

Nina is a shy/scared little girl. She weighs 55 pounds and this is a good weight for her. She has a beautiful deep dark red coat. What you don't see is that this poor little girl has endured a number of battles. Her little body is riddled with many scars (likely from fights with other dogs). Most of her scars are hidden underneath her beautiful coat. However she has a big abscess on her front left shoulder. Foster Dad brought her to the vet to have this looked at and she was sent home with a 14 day antibiotic to help reduce the swelling and inflammation of this injury. The breeder had used a medicine that is used for cattle and horses to treat this injury. Nina will always have a scar from this injury. Our hope is that her beautiful red coat will grow back in and cover most of this.

Through all of this Nina is just about as sweet of a girl as you could ask for. We have taken her for several walks in the neighborhood and I have to say she is doing well very quickly. Of course it helps that I use my 2 golden foster failures (Indy 07-253 and Lauren 08-498) as book ends with Nina in the middle. Nina does stop from time to time to try and wiggle out of her Gentle Leader but has not succeeded. She also stops if a loud car/truck/motorcycle drives by. She has attempted to join in play bow play with Indy and Lauren in the backyard. She shies away quickly as Lauren gets a bit too enthusiastic in play for Nina's tastes.

In the house Nina is a busy body with moving toys/bones/shoes/slippers from room to room. I bought her a new toy duck (without the stuffing) on Friday night at the pet store and so far it has not been ripped to shreds. It is so cute to watch her move her things. She is starting to learn her name. She was called Nub by the breeder as she has a short tail, about half the length of a normal tail. When I volunteered to take her as a foster I asked if we could give her a name that had more dignity than Nub, hence the name Nina.

We had 2 accidents in the house within the first 24 hours. Since then there have been no accidents in the house. The only problem is that Nina is very shy and FD has resorted to carrying her outside for her business (good thing she doesn't weigh 100 pounds). She is now starting to come in on her own will by following the resident dogs. Everything takes time with these shy/scared mill dogs. In time Nina will gain the confidence both by watching my other former mill girls and also by experiencing love and good rewards for her behavior. She has already beaten one of my former mill girls by giving me a gentle kiss on my chin while I was brushing her.

Nina will go back into the vet in 10 days to see how the antibiotics have worked on her shoulder abscess. We hope to find out then what time frame it will be before she can be spayed. She supposedly had just miscarried a litter of puppies before being surrendered to RAGOM. Nina's future home will require the following:

  • Another resident dog to guide her.
  • No small children or teen aged and older.
  • A physical fence would be ideal. I will let you know if this is absolutely necessary in another update.

Thanks for reading up on the many wonderful rescue dogs that RAGOM serves! Check back again for future updates on this beauty!

Here is a message from Nina's forever home.

The first 2 pictures are of the dogs in the kitchen.  The dogs are Nina, Cedar, and Glory (from left to right).

The third picture is with Steve with Cedar, and Renee has Glory and Nina in front of her.

Merry Christmas from the D household!  Our 3 RAGOM dogs are looking forward to treats that Santa will bring for them.  Nina has slid right in with the others.  It's like she's always lived here.  Cedar (01-326) is the big red dog!  We adopted him when he was 4 1/2 months old in 2001.  We adopted Little Bear (08-426), the yellow lab/golden mix, whom we renamed Glory, in May, 2009.  And now Nina (10-142), in November, 2010.  All were puppy mill dogs, scared to death of everything.  But through the love and patience of their foster parents, their fears started to diminish.  They still came to us very scared. Did they have accidents in the house, chew up things, hide behind furniture when someone came near? Yes, all of them did. But slowly, they began to trust, and it is the most rewarding thing in the world to see the changes that unconditional love has made in them. Whenever we decide we "need" another dog in our home, we always go to RAGOM. And we always take a puppy mill dog. And have never regretted any of it for one single second. Again, Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from Steve, Renee, Cedar, Glory, & Nina D.

Renee and Steve also have a son who lives nearby them.  Their son has a boxer, Reggie, that comes over to Renee and Steve's to play with their RAGOM dogs.  Apparently Reggie and Nina love to engage in a hearty game of chase in their backyard.  Often times the game of chase involves a toy so it also a bout of keep away from each other.

This message conveys the full sentiment of why we as fosters continue to take in another scared needy dog. It's all about finding them the perfect "forever home". Congratulations to the D family and Nina!

Hello to all of the Nina fans out there!  The weather has just been too nice and we have been outside enjoying it so much so that FD has been a bit lax in getting an update in on this sweet girl.  I have a cute story to tell you about Nina.  A few weeks ago while FD was busy raking leaves in the back yard Nina was busy working in the garden.  She came up to my nicely raked pile of leaves and laid down.  Then I noticed that Nina was chewing on something.  Turns out she was eating a green tomato.  I now know why my tomato plants had such a small crop of fruit this year.  Note to self always close the gate around the vegetable garden securely.  Good thing she didn't ask me for some lettuce and bacon to go with her tomatoes. This past weekend Nina and the pack and I went to visit my Mother for the weekend.  I am happy to report that on both legs of the trip Nina did not have any issues with getting car sick.  YAY Nina!   The biggest news that we have to share is that there is a very special family that is anxiously awaiting to meet Nina in person.  We have not yet set a definite date and place to meet Nina but it is in the works.  One of the reasons for the delay is that FD recently had Nina into our friendly vet and we found that she has a slight UTI (urinary tract infection).  We have only three days to go on the medicine and then we will have a follow up visit to make sure this is all cleared up.  We have not had any accidents in over a week so I think we should get a clean report at the vets. Hope you enjoy the latest picture of Nina and her babies!  How could you not love someone as cute as this?

Nina had a great time last Saturday at the Plymouth PetSmart.  She met some really nice RAGOM fans and soaked up lots of scratches and some good treats.  She is still seeking someone to call her forever home.  Could that be you?  If you would like to see her she will be at the PetCo in West Saint Paul this Saturday from 11 AM to 1 PM.  Come and meet the sweetest petite dark red Golden Retriever.  Nina is about 4.5 years old. She's petite and weighs just under 50 pounds. She is a gorgeous deep dark red in color with a really black nose. She loves her stuffed babies (former puppy mill mama). She will bat you with her paw(s) for attention if you ignore her. FD would love to get a note from your dedicated placement advisor that you would like to meet Nina.  If you wait any longer FD may just have to become a 3 time foster failure and make her a permanent resident.  Most of my neighbors already think this since she has been here for so long.  So hurry up and get in touch with your placement advisor! XOXONina

Nina had a fabulous time last weekend at the Goldzilla event! She met many nice fans and received so many scratches and tummy rubs. She and her foster sisters were completely exhausted at the end of the day. They snuggled in the backseat and slept the entire car ride home. We hope you enjoy the one picture of Nina with (Avery's 10-203 little pink bunny). Nina claimed it as her baby while we were at the Foster Dog tent. This really is how she is, so cute and calm. Are you interested?

FD and the pack are leaving to go enjoy the fall colors at the cabin and to close it for the season. Luckily FD had some vacation time remaining so we get to enjoy almost a full week "up north".

If you are interested in meeting Nina, please contact your placement advisor. Nina has been waiting since mid-May to meet her forever family. Could that be you?

XOXO

Nina here checking in to let all my RAGOM fans know what I have been up to. I attended a meet and greet at the Eden Prairie PetSmart and got to meet some very nice people. Some of the smaller ones were even kind enough to give me some tasty treats. Some I did eat and others I saved for later. All in all I must say I was far more braver than a few months back. FD took me to this event without any of my pals. He told me I would be okay as there would be other RAGOM dogs there too. In fact I was in really good company with Tammy 10-160 and Peaches 10-148. After that FD brought me to a RAGOM volunteer meeting where I met some other Goldens and RAGOM Happy Endings Dogs. I was sure tired when we got home but ever so happy to see my pals (Indy, Lauren, and Dakota).

This past week FD took a few days off of work and we made a road trip up to his lake cabin. Talk about being in 7th heaven. My pals and I sure can play chase in the big yard. I got to go out in the boat with FD to fish. I was a bit nervous but after a short while I found a perfect place to stretch out and do some tanning and resting. I surprised FD one morning by engaging in some wrestling with Indy. FD says I am beginning to mimic both Indy and Lauren the longer that I have been with him. I like to bat my paw at FD when he is not paying attention to me when he should be.

I am getting better at riding in the car. We made the trip up to the cabin (4 hours) and I did not get any upset stomach. The return trip we were all the way back and when FD slowed to wait for a car on my home street I did get a little stomach turbulence, so close. FD says you should come and see me at the huge Goldzilla event on Saturday September 18th. Look for me I will be the really pretty petite girl with the deep dark red coat and a purple collar.

We recently weighed Nina and she is just shy of 50 pounds. She truly is a sweet peanut. What Nina is looking for in a forever home is:

  • Another resident dog (she does really follow my resident dogs lead as a former puppy mill).
  • No small children (teens and up would be better). She is shy in new situations and flees from loud noises and sudden movements.
  • A physical fence would be good but she is okay on a tie out or supervised in the yard.

If you would like to meet this sweet little girl please let your placement advisor know.

XOXO
Nina

Nina here, FD has been too busy to write an update so I am taking charge and letting you all know what has been going on with me.  A few weeks ago FD had company for the weekend, his brother and family came for the Back to the 50's car show.  I didn't know what to make of all these strange people in my house so for the first day I hid from them in my safe spots.  By day 2 I figured these were nice people and I slowly started to approach them for pets and hugs.  It really is nice to get so much attention, I must say. Last week FD took me into the Vet clinic and they gave me some sort of shot and it really knocked me out.  When I woke up everything was fuzzy and I had this big yellow bandage around my waist.  I overheard them say I had been spayed and my having litter after litter of puppies is all over.  The Dr. did tell FD that they wanted to run a test (histopathology) on some tissue as it looked unusual.  The kind Dr. called back this week to say everything is okay.

Last weekend to recuperate from my major surgery FD took me and the residents to the lake cabin up north.  We had the place to ourselves and boy it sure was peaceful.  I obeyed all his commands and stayed out of the water (Dr's. orders too).  I loved to walk out on the dock and look for ducks, geese. and loons.  It was also quite refreshing just to lounge in the lush green grass and breath in the crisp clean air. FD has been taking us for our nightly walks.  He says I walk so nice but I trail the resident dogs.  Once in a while I get brave and walk up in front like they do but most of the time I am content to bring up the rear.  I am getting better about riding in the car but I still get an upset tummy sometimes.  I guess FD has dealt with this before as he always puts blankets or beach towels down for us furr butts.FD says I am fully ready for my forever home.  This home should have the following: Another resident dog (to be my role model and teacher)No small children (kids 12 and over would be okay)A physical fence would be ideal but I really don't venture far from my people.Someone to give me lots of love and attention. If you are interested in knowing more about me please contact your placement advisor. XOXONina FD wishes everyone a safe Fourth of July!  Please leave the fireworks to the professionals.  Some of our furr kids get very agitated by these loud noises which can cause them to bolt and run, so stay safe!

Nina will be making an appearance at the Rally for the Rescues at Fury Motors in South Saint Paul this Saturday from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.  So come out and see her and the other RAGOM dogs. Nina has been so busy doing so many new things to her.  She traveled up to our family lake home for the Memorial Day weekend.  She is getting more used to the car rides.  She did get sick on the way up but was just fine on our return trip.  She followed her furr siblings at the lake while on a long trailing lead.  The one thing she did not do was venture into the lake.  She tip toed down on the rocks several times to get a drink but that was the extent of her comfort zone.  I think in time she would follow her furr sisters in the lake.  She walked on the dock down to the boat without any hesitation.  She enjoyed a boat ride with her sister, Lauren 08-498 and FD of course.  Nina is extremely shy in new situations.  This was readily apparent on Saturday when my brother and four of his sons arrived.  Nina retreated from my nephews (7 -15) as they were a bit loud and moved much too fast for her at times.  By Memorial Day she was enjoying more love and tummy rubs from my nephews.  Good thing we have 2 cabins and FD and the dogs could retreat to one for some peace and quiet. The longer that Nina is here the more she is coming out of her shell or safety zones.  She will sometimes chase after her furr siblings in the yard.  Just like a young puppy she has not learned the cues of when her siblings are going to stop and she plows into them.  Other times she starts to run and you can tell she lacks a bit of coordination.  Almost like she is just realizing how long her legs are.  She gets super excited when we mention the word walk.  She dances near the door until I try and put the Gentle Leader on her.  Then I have to follow her to her save spot and put it on and we are good to go.  She only tries a few times to wiggle her nose out of it and then falls in line. Nina has a tentative spay appointment for June 16th.  Because she was said to have lost a litter of puppies just before being surrendered we are not sure if she will be completely ready for the surgery.  We will let you know in future updates.
