Spice 10-118

We would like to welcome Spice into the Ragom family!

A very special thank you to Rona for doing the intake, John & Deanna for transporting him over 8 hours to us. He came from a shelter as a stray and when he wasn't claimed after 7 days the shelter called Ragom and they took him in. He is a very energetic young Golden Retriever mixed with Irish setter. Spice is about 12-14 months old. A very special dog. He has green eyes. Cool!!!!!!!!!!

He still has a few baby teeth. He loves life and everyone he meets. He arrived on Sunday afternoon and met the resident 4 yr female golden Timber without any issues. Timber did have to let him know that he was not going to have his way with her. NO WAY!! I am a lady...But she shares her toys and her humans with Spice.

He enjoyed running around the back yard for hours to burn off all his energy after being kenneled at the shelter for 7 days.

Spice was very smelly so we gave him a bath outside in the pool.  He was a real trooper through it all. He will need a few more baths. He went into the Vet on Monday to get UTD and Fecal & HW are negative. Then, he will be neutered on Thursday 4/22/10 .

He weighed in at 47.2 lbs, very skinny. But with some good food he should put on some weight and his coat should improve. He's a smaller GR/Mix. Perfect for those families that want a dog but not a large one. Nice feathers and curly brown hair. He has a great temperament.  He knows when to listen to the resident golden and back off. But loves to play!!! Knows sit & stay sometimes…….

Spice’s first night he barked & whined for a hour in his crate, but I'm sure that he didn't like being crated again after 7 days at the shelter. He then settled in for the night. I heard him a few times hitting the side of the crate probably shifting positions. I always crate my foster dogs until I know them well. Plus I have a 4 yr female and they could turn our house upside down playing.

Spice was a little better last night in the crate. Woke me up whinnying at 2:30 am so I let the dogs out and then went back to bed until 5:30 and then we were all up for the day. I think Spice got out the door before Timber. Boy he's quick as a bug in a rug.

He eats his food faster than the resident dog Timber which I never knew was possible.

Pics are hard to get of him because he doesn't stand still long.........

But I got a few.

This is what we know so far that he needs in his forever home:

Physical fence since he was a stray
Time & patience with a young energetic dog
Dog park or another dog for a playmate,
Cats he was fine with at the HS. But we will try and test him.
Obedience classes since he does like to jump up and needs manners.
Lots of cuddle time. He loves to be petted.
Walks
Kids over 7 yrs because I think he would knock over small kids. Not on purpose but he's energetic.
He could maybe be a good Jogging partner.

So far he hasn't jumped on the furniture.

Last night he had another bath and smells so much better now. We went for a 2 mile walk to dry off and he was still going strong.

He really needs to learn how to walk better. I call him my drunken walker all over the place.

I will try a gentle leader on him next time.

More to come as we get to know Spice.  Spice will be neutered on Thursday so he will rest for a few days - Yeah right!!!!!

From Hank's (fka Spice) forever family...

This is a little tardy as it is part of the Hank Summer Vacation Series.... I adopted him around Memorial Day, so we spent a fair amount if time at the lake over the summer. Hank is very... enthusiastic, but nothing wears him out like chasing tennis balls and swimming at the lake! He loves the water! Ruggedly handsome in this photo as you can see.

Spice has been with us for 6 weeks. We have enjoyed having him.  Spice was our 13th foster in 2 1/2 years. Timber had a full time playmate.  Spice knew how to get her to play usually by stealing her favorite balls.
Spice popped several balls but we would just go out and buy more.  Spice came in as a stray.  He learned how to sit and stay most of the times. We as fosters see many dogs come into Ragom.  Some strays, some family troubles, money, or lost jobs. Ragom always takes them under their wings, and we as fosters take them in and love them and make them feel safe and then find them their forever homes. We do this because we love what we do.  It is so rewarding to foster these dogs.  All my foster dogs are special in different ways and I love them all.  We look to find that perfect home for the foster dog we have.  Spice was very unique he had that special look like love me if you can catch me.  He is very energetic so to get him to settle down was a real challenge, but when he did, he let you pet him & enjoyed it.

Spice has found his forever home with Mary and her 2 cats. She will spoil him. Take him to her lake cabin.  Spice will be a Jogging partner & walking partner.  But first she needs to begin the training & bonding trust.  Spice will be a great dog and will have many years ahead of him.

FM&FD & Timber will miss you Spice. We will come and visit you .

Thanks to Mary for  adopting Spice & making him a part of your life.

Spice here. FM says I can do my own update this time she's too busy today. I had a great time at the Petsmart event on Saturday.

FM couldn't understand why I kept trying to get under the shelving. Well, duh, there were balls under there and Timber wasn't around to get them.  I was so excited to see the other dogs there so I was barking at them.  I wanted to play with Korbin & Millie but Millie didn't want to play with me.  FM wouldn't let me play, she said I needed to behave so people could come & meet me, shucks!!!  FM says I can play when I go home.  I got a pigs ear for the ride home.  FM should of bought us more toys because Timber & I have torn a few apart playing tug-of-war.  I don't understand why I haven't found my forever home yet.  I am almost perfect! Ok, I'm still a big puppy yet with lots of energy, but that's the fun of it.  I will be around a long time to keep you company.

Well FM says I have to go now and get a bath so I will be all ready for the next event or maybe meet a family soon. I don't understand I will just get dirty again wrestling with Timber.  FD keeps running the sprinkler system. Do you think he's trying to tell us that he wants the grass to grow or something?  FM brought out the pool for Timber and I to keep cool.

Thanks for reading up on me.

Spice the man.

Looks comfortable in there!

Spice got the toy again - that youngster!

I sure am a good looking dog!

Timber says my turn to cool off.

Spice had a great time at the event on Saturday.  He wanted to play with Clyde so they had their own little show going on.  Thanks to everyone that came out to see the Ragom dogs. Spice continues to play with the resident dog Timber. He is gaining some weight too.  It is so cute to watch how he plays when there's no other dog around.  They are pooped at night from playing all the time.

He is learning that by going into his crate he gets treats so he doesn't mind at all.  He sleeps all night without a peep.  He is crated during the day while we are at work because he would play all day with Timber and I wouldn't want to come home with stuff knocked over.

He is housetrained, with only 1 accident the first week.  Spice has been with us for 3 weeks. His zest for life is so cute.  Thanks to Ragom for saving him from being put to sleep 3 weeks ago.

Spice is waiting for his own forever family. Just because he is not a purebred Golden, he still has a Golden personality.  He is part Golden, part Setter, and a dash of Springer.  A very unique dog.  He will make a wonderful companion for a special family or person.

Spice & Timber playing tug with milk carton

Spice & Timber playing with a milk carton

Thursday, May 6, 2010

Life is good in Spice land. Spice continues to open up more each day. He is always  bugging the  resident dog Timber to play. He knows what buttons to push and I suppose she's no better. They play tug of war. Fetch, oh boy does he like to get the balls before Timber. He even brings them back Sometimes.

I can take  balls & toys away anytime . I have no problem putting my hand in his mouth.  My resident dog timber could learn from spice.

We had a doggy party at the house on Tuesday. Spice & Timber and Ender a 1 yr old lab. Ender came over to give resident dog timber a break from playing. He came into the yard with no issues at all. Spice & the dogs  began to play for 1 1/2 hrs all 3 were tired.

They all had a great time. Thanks Ender!!!.

Spice goes for a 2 mile walk daily & lots of play time with Timber.

Spice is looking for his own forever home. If you are looking for a wonderful energetic dog that keeps on going Spice may be the dog for your family. He would enjoy another dog to play with too, but if not a dog park would be great.

Keep in mind he is still a puppy in most ways. Lots of play time, walks, Jogging would be great. But in the end you will get 1 great dog.
Spice does need training as all dogs do. He has a good nose.  We were walking last night and all of a sudden he went toward the pond area and up flew a duck. Foster dad thinks with lots of patience & training he could be a hunting dog! He has the energy level needed.

I have some pictures of the dogs playing and resting.

Thanks for reading up on Spice the Man. Spice will be at the event this Saturday. Come on out and meet him.

Spice continues to do well.  He is learning the routine at our house.  He's an energized young dog and loves to play with the resident dog Timber.  They do get kind of roudy many times a day and we need to make sure to rest them. Spice is growing more confident in himself, but likes to push his luck with Timber.  He tries several times a day taking her toys away from her, and sometimes he succeeds. Spice is still learning his place.

I do need to revise his needs in his forever home now that we are getting to know him better.

* Needs a physical fence
* Older kids like teenagers or kids that are dog savvy.  He likes kids, but since he is young he could knock them over in all of his excitement.
* He can be an only dog or have another fur brother or fur sister.  He gets along great with dogs.
* Lots of patience because he is a puppy at heart still.  Has great recall and learns quickly on some things.
* Obedience classes.
* Dog parks would be great for him to run off energy.
* We were told he's ok with cats, but if you have a cat I could get him cat tested for you.

We have noticed he gets a little mouthy when he's excited so we're working on correcting this which is why no small kids.

We have also noticed when we feed him you just put the bowl down and walk away, otherwise he gets growly if you try and take the food away.  He gives very good warning signs.  Because he was a stray we think he was very protective of his food.  He is skinny, so we are feeding him 5 cups a day to fatten him up.  We hope over time he will realize that he doesn't have to be afraid that he won't get to eat.

We can hand feed him and he is fine. We can take toys away with no problem, and he takes treat just fine.  We can also take rawhides away with no problem. It's just after putting the food down that he gets a bit possessive, and that is why we place the food, and leave him be.

Spice continues to enjoy his freedom and playing with the resident dog. Loves his walks and the Gentle Leader works the best for him.  I think he would be a great running partner for someone, but he would just need to be trained not to stop and pee all the time.

If you are interested in meeting Spice contact your placement advisor.

Thanks for reading up on Spice.  More to come as we get to know him better.
