Oliver (Chester 10-108)

Profile

Chester is a 7 year old pure bred beautiful blond boy!  He gets a long great with dogs, will chase cats to give them kisses and likes people and kids of all ages.  He loves to sit by people and is not a jumper at all!  We have had one accident since he arrived but he is still nervous and drinking a lot of water.  He goes in a kennel when we are away and seems to feel safe there.  He does not cry or bark until he sees you are going to let him out.  He is in great shape, neutered, and loves to go on walks.  He weighs approx 55 pounds and is underweight from being a stray.  He has good an appetite so he will fill out easily in no time!  He jumped in the bath tub on his own for a bath and stood very nicely.  He will need a fence.  He is going to make someone a wonderful dog!!!  If you think Chester sounds like a goof fit for you let placement know!!

Oliver (fka Chester) is doing great! He is settling in to life here in our crazy house. He is very attached to me, but it works out since he spends most of his time with me. He and Farley are getting along great. I think he's bringing a little more youth to the doggy part of the household and it's rubbing off a little bit on the old man. The cats are split - one kitty (my female) thinks he's great - the two of them spent last night in my lap while I watched some TV. My male cat deals with Oliver like he deals with all dogs: they must be punished. Oliver has figured out to stay a few paces away from the male kitty but can't help but give chase if one of them moves quickly. The cats are able to put him in his place and no one seems too stressed out.

Taking Oliver to work has been going well - lots of my clients remember my former dog Milo, so they are very happy to see another dog in my office. He learned after 3 days that I will leave the door open as long as he agrees NOT to jump the baby gate! He has figured out the office is his home and he is doing well in there. I think he will relax into our routine before too long.

I haven't started the heartworm treatment yet - probably will next week. I have been going over the latest publications about the new thoughts in treatment and am figuring out a protocol that will work best for him. Also my parents came to town this weekend, so I knew it would be hard to keep Oliver quiet during this time. Since we haven't had to restrict his activity yet, I have been walking him at least 30 minutes a day (a good, fast walk) and doing some playtime in the back yard. It's been good for both of us.

Chester is a lucky, lucky boy! He was adopted by a wonderful family and has a vet for a mom! She is going to treat Chester's heartworm so that RAGOM does not have to bear the cost. That is so generous! I am always amazed by the stellar families we have adopting our dogs. Chester will have two human kids, two cats and another senior Golden boy for company. Good luck, Chester! We love you and can't wait to hear that you are all healthy and the heart worm is gone!

Chester's New Home!

Tuesday, April 20, 2010

Chester has been with us for a few weeks now and he is just a great boy! He is a velcro boy. Sometimes that settles down a bit once a dog has been here a while but so far not for Chester. He wants to be in the vicinity of my hand at all times. He is learning 'that's enough' though. Chester is one of those stunningly handsome Golden's. On the smaller side with the coat that flows from side to side when he walks. Just gorgeous.

Chester gets along great with other dogs and loves kids! He has been around 8-12 year old boys every day and just follows them around and lets them do as they please with him. He also walks nicely on the Gentle Leader but will pull on a flat leash. Chester is quite the escape artist! He went under my chain link fence and through any space more than 4 inches. He never left the neighborhood. Chester just likes to explore, I think. All of those spots have been plugged up and he can now be outside without a tie out.

The sad news is, Chester is Heartworm positive. I was so angry when I heard it! Such a simple preventable disease. One pill a month. Now Chester will be going through several months of treatment at a cost of about $1000 by the time it is all done. The vet thinks he will do very well so I am looking forward to getting it all started.

Please keep Chester in your thoughts as he starts this nasty treatment.
