Ellie (Ginger 10-037)

Profile

Ginger came to me yesterday all the way from Sioux Falls, SD (thanks Kathy and Ellie!) from a rescue shelter so not much history is known about her. She looks to be about 3-4 years old.

I have had her less than 24 hours, but this is what I know so far:

She’s a yellow Labrador retriever! The shelter reported that she was a GR mix, but I believe her to be all Lab. She’s got your typical Lab sweet personality and stockier build; she weights 68 lbs. which seems to be a decent weight for her, tail wags a lot, loves attention and a good appetite. She rides GREAT in the car and is even a good shopper—meaning she sits quietly in the back seat and either lays down or looks out the window while you drive and waits very patiently in the car when you go into the store!

Her first night here was good—you kind of expect the first night to be a little restless and little sleep, but she did great. I baby gated her in the kitchen with a comfy bed and she was quiet all night from about 10:30pm until I got up at 7a.m. Also, she didn’t touch the baby gate, but will report on how that continues to go. We’ve already been to the vet so she is up to date on her shots, microchipped, she came into RAGOM already spayed. She is currently being treated for kennel cough and seems to be on the mend. About one more week of antibiotics and she should be good to go. Otherwise, the good doctor said she’s appears to be very healthy.

I’m also wondering if she might be a former hunting dog. She came from S.D. as a stray and when she walks on the leash, she zig zags. She needs a little training on how to walk nicely on the leash and not be too overzealous about meeting new dogs. My resident dog Murphy has already corrected her a couple of times and she seems to respond well. She will back down without incident.

I think Ginger is still stressed about the long ride, being in a shelter and all the new things and people. Right now she really needs a lot of TLC, but I can already tell she is starting settle in a bit (she is snoring on her bed right now) and when things become normal, and she gets regular attention, she will be a great pet.

Updates

Hello out there to Ginger fans.  She had a bad spell of coughing last week, but with the help of her antibiotics and special care she is doing very well.

I'm still getting to know Ginger, but I can tell you already she is just one happy, playful dog. She has been shuffled around a lot these past few weeks and she is taking it in stride. I don't think her tail has stopped wagging since she came to my home.

As I mentioned before, she is your classic Lab who loves toys, ropes and balls. I think she would retrieve as long as you would throw for her. She will bring the ball or toy right back to you and hold it until you take it from her and then she will easily release it. Her recall seems to be excellent and she is responding to her name, although I don’t think she has had it for very long.

So far she is eating well, loves any treats you offer, barks very little, and respects baby gates.  She slept in my bedroom with me for the first time last night on her doggie bed and she was perfect.  I baby gated the door just to keep her from roaming the house, and she was just fine with that.  It didn't hurt that I woke her up about 6:30am to give her some scratches before getting up. She just lays on her bed very comfortably and lets me love her up as long as I wanted.  This is the first week of baby gating her in the kitchen while I'm away at work, and so far so good.  So there will be more updates on that as time goes on.

I am currently teaching her to walk nicely on her leash using a gentle leader.  She's fine until she's sees a person or a dog, then she's pulls and is a little over zealous on the greeting.  So far, she has responded well to wearing the gentle leader.  I'll keep you posted on how that goes.

Ginger is a very well adjusted social dog, and loves people best of all.  I think she would be fine in a home with another dog, but I think she would love even more to be the only dog and get all your attention. She does not appear to be a runner, but I'm not sure yet.  So she may or may not require a physical fence.
