Welcome to RAGOM Maggie! Maggie is a young 1 year old beautiful female Golden Retriever. She was found in a northern Minnesota town by a Good Samaritan alone out in the country. The family that found Maggie could not keep her, so they asked RAGOM to help Maggie find a new furever home. A very big “thank you” goes to this family from Maggie and us. They took Maggie into their home and made sure she was loved, safe, warm, fed and vetted.
Maggie came to our home on a Sunday afternoon and has been quite busy since. We went to the vet for a wellness exam and micro-chipping. Maggie weighed in at 50 pounds, is in good health and is up-to-date on her vaccinations. She has met our resident Golden’s and our cat and discovered lots of fun toys to play with. As we have been getting to know Maggie, here is what we’ve learned so far:
- Our little Miss Maggie is a bit shy at first. She is a calm, quiet little girl who is most interested in being cuddled. She LOVES to sit on us every chance she gets!
- Maggie is a work in progress when it comes to house-training. She is learning and will need guidance from her new family.
- Maggie is not crate trained. This is something we are working on. She will go into our crate when a treat is tossed in and she requires some coaxing.
- Maggie knows several commands; sit, come and no; and she is fairly consistent in obeying commands when indoors. When Maggie is outdoors, she is often more interested in sniffing and following her nose than anything else. She has exhibited “points” frequently in our fields and appears to be highly interested in hunting. We think she may have had some training for this because she wants to walk consistently on a person’s left side, and she is leash trained.
- Maggie is a dog that wants to please, and just be with her people. She is a smart girl, with a very sweet personality. That said, she is young and needs a home with structure, routine and lots of loving. Maggie needs to go to obedience school, and it will help with the bonding process in her new furever home.
- Maggie likes other dogs (we have 2 residents Golden’s here) and is enthusiastic about playing. She would do well in a home with another dog, but we don’t think she has to have another dog in the home. She does LOVE toys; she LOVES to chew on them. Maggie seems to understand that she can only chew on toys, rawhides, etc. However, she has chewed on a few household items and will need a bit more training in this area.
- Maggie does not exhibit any resource guarding. In fact, she plays with and shares toys well. She has been playing tug o’ war with our McKenna often. She hasn’t exhibited any issues with guarding food either.
- Maggie has met our resident cat and passed the “cat test” with flying colors.
- Maggie is the first Golden we have met that is not treat or food motivated. She likes treats, but they do not necessarily motivate her to do something. She is more interested in praise and petting than food.
- We have not had Maggie around small children. The Good Samaritan who found Maggie did have her around small children and said she did very well with them. This is consistent with Maggie’s personality and disposition.
- We do not have a fence at our home, so Maggie is either on a leash or tie-out when outside. The Good Samaritan who found Maggie told us that she does go off on her own and doesn’t return readily when not on a leash. We’ve notice that she is not consistent following commands when outdoors (more interested in smells). So we would like Maggie’s new furever home to have a physical fence.
- Maggie is sleeping on our son’s bed at night. She really enjoys sleeping/cuddling with her humans! She loves to snuggle up in the blankets…
Maggie is a very sweet, loving little lady. Please contact your placement advisor if you are interested!
