Introducing... Toby!!!  Toby is an 8 year-old purebred Golden Retriever (he was born on Christmas Day, 2001).  He is a very happy, friendly, and CUDDLY 80 lb boy who acts like a two year old! Prior to becoming a RAGOM dog, he was an outdoors-only dog.  He had been passed along over the years because his previous families could not keep him for one reason or another.  He was surrendered to RAGOM last week after he started getting into garbage and chewing on his last family’s house -- oops!  They knew that there was probably a better home for him out there somewhere, and that a bit more attention and companionship were probably what he needed!

Toby has had a pretty exciting first week of his new RAGOM life!  Having been an outdoor dog, he had some pretty serious fur matting, so we got right down to business and started grooming.  Our wonderful family friends let us use their dog washing station to get him all cleaned up.  Toby was in heaven!  He practically fell asleep standing up, making adorable happy sighing noises as we rinsed him with warm water.  Unfortunately, while we were cutting out a big knot of fur behind his ear we accidentally clipped the underlying skin, too – but he didn’t even flinch or make a peep!  Lucky for Toby, my surgical resident husband got him all stitched up -- no problem!  A little bit of lidocaine let Toby lie comfortably as he sutured his skin.  By the end of the day, Toby was looking much better - although his fur is now a little uneven from all the clipping we had to do.  Still, such a handsome boy!

Toby has a seizure disorder, and he has not been getting treatment for it.  Two days after bringing him into our home, he showed us what his seizures look like.  We made a quick trip to the vet – thankfully everything checked out ok.  He was acting like himself again by the time we got home.  We will continue to monitor him for seizures, and if they become too long and/or too frequent, we will put him on medication.

Toby is doing remarkably well for becoming an indoor dog just this week!  For never having been house trained, he seems to instinctively know to go to the door and ask politely when he needs to do his business.  We wonder if he may have had some form of training somewhere along the way.  He did have a couple mistakes when we weren’t paying attention to his requests – the unfinished area of our basement seemed like a reasonable alternative for outside!  Toby is also slowly learning what toys he can play with and what household items are to be left alone.  He does have an affinity for counter surfing, but we’re working on that.  He comes when he is called without fail and responds to verbal corrections.  Toby is also working on crate training.  He sleeps in a crate at night and spends the day in there while foster mom and dad are at work.  He goes in without complaint if a treat is offered, and he doesn’t make a peep once inside.

Toby gets along well with our resident Golden, Abby, and they have been playing almost all day everyday so far.  They have gotten a little snarky with each other a couple times – a little jealousy perhaps?  Overall, they’re quickly becoming very good friends.   We were told he gets along well with other dogs in general, and he has proven this both with Abby and with other dogs at the park.  He also gets along well with cats – he will nuzzle and lick our cat, Stuart, if given the opportunity.  We were also told he gets along well with kids - he just tends to knock smaller ones, as he is such a big and playful guy!  We have had many friends and family in our home over the holidays, and he has loved everyone he has met!

Toby is such a sweet, affectionate Golden boy who loves to cuddle, chew on rawhides, and play fetch.  He needs a forever home where he will get lots of attention and continue to learn “inside rules”.  He has responded very well to training so far and is such a people pleaser!  It seems like his naughty behavior (e.g. chewing on the house) was likely related to boredom and loneliness.  He really loves being around people and having things to do!

From Toby's forever family...

We adopted Toby on March 12, 2010 from a great foster family in Rochester MN. During the first 4-5 weeks in his new home, Toby adapted well, enjoying his new yard, taking walks at the lake, and chasing his tennis ball. He had free roam of the house, and never bothered anything that didn’t belong to him.

Then thunderstorm season hit and everything changed. Thunder and lightning would cause Toby to panic. His body would physically shake; he would pant, pace, dig, and even make himself sick. We tried everything we could think of to calm him, but nothing worked. When storms hit while we were at work, we would come home to mass destruction. Several times the bottoms of doors were completely destroyed, vertical blinds ripped off the window and carpet ruined. We tried medication, music therapy, desensitization, the Thundershirt and many other suggestions to no avail. And while all of this was going on, his seizure activity was increasing and his blood tests showed the Phenobarbital he was taking was causing liver function damage.

We were committed to making Toby’s life better, and I’m happy to say, we’ve made huge strides since last Spring. He is in a crate during the day while we’re at work (we waited until thunderstorm season ended to reintroduce the crate so he wouldn’t associate it with storms or have more stress to deal with). His crate is his happy and safe place. He eagerly goes in every morning and is totally calm when we arrive home after work. If he feels a storm approaching during the night, he wakes me up (we do not need a weather radio anymore – Toby is much more accurate!) and we head to the crate. He began taking a new seizure medication called Zonisamide, which seems to be controlling his seizures and helping to reverse the liver function damage (his last blood test came back with good levels). Our foster, Mercy 10-191 was adopted over the Christmas holidays, and I know Toby misses her as much as we do, but all in all, he is back to being the happy, loving boy he was when he first arrived.

It has been a huge learning experience for us, but we knew Toby was a great guy that needed someone to take the time to work through his issues. In his previous life, when problems arose, he was passed on to the next owner. RAGOM and his foster parents took him in and began the process of giving him the life he deserved, and we are happy we were able to follow through and make it happen. Toby is definitely a “happy ending’ Golden!

Toby continues to be a happy and loving member of our family! He seems to be getting used to the routine in his foster home, and makes us smile on a daily (if not hourly!) basis. Here are a few recent highlights:

  • He was the star of the show at a recent dinner party at our home, delighting our guests with his affectionate and playful manner. He absolutely loved every ounce of attention he received! He also managed to steal and eat an entire bag of shredded coconut... he is certainly an opportunistic eater.
  • Only one seizure in the past month since starting on phenobarbital!
  • Slip-sliding around while chasing tennis balls after the recent freezing rain.
  • Adopting one of our stuffed animal puppies as his new "baby".

For being a "senior citizen", he certainly has brought a great deal of new energy into our daily lives! He makes Abby, our resident 3 year old golden, look like a couch potato by comparison. That being said, she has enjoyed having a such a lively companion and playmate. Always ready for a game of fetch, tug, or just a nice walk, Toby will certainly be an active member of his future forever family. His exercise requirement is by no means excessive, however, and he has fit well into our daily routine.

That's all for now! Please contact RAGOM if you have room in your life for this wonderful, cuddly, and friendly boy!

Toby's Top Ten
Things he loves and things we love about him! (in no particular order)

  1. ALWAYS happy, he is a golden after all...
  2. Will have a BEAUTIFUL golden-blonde coat when his fur grows back out -- he is a purebred boy
  3. Potty-trained from day one after being an outdoor dog (smart boy!)
  4. Makes the funniest noises for all occasions. He has a great happy moan and "oinks" when he is sniffing things.
  5. BEST cuddler and soooo sweet -- loves to finagle his way onto the bed and sleep between my husband and me (Would LOVE to go to a home where there is room on the bed for him!)
  6. LOVES to lie on his back and hold toys with his paws over his face -- so cute!
  7. LOVES to ride in the car - prefers the front seat, if available
  8. VERY food/treat motivated = easy to train, this man has FOCUS when he has a treat in front of him!
  9. LOVES to eat and gets adorably excited for his meals
  10. LOVES to play tug, loudly!

Ok, so maybe there are way more than 10 loving/lovable things about Toby...

  1. Doesn't need a physical fence (we have an invisible fence) -- comes when called as though it's his favorite thing!
  2. Not afraid of the vacuum, doesn't bark or attack it either
  3. Doesn't bark or go into a frenzy when there is a knock at the door or if the doorbell rings
  4. Loves to roll and slide around in the snow
  5. Loves to carry around balls/toys (somehow this is so endearing!)
  6. LOVES to give sloppy kisses
  7. LOVES to be pet and will remind you if you if you accidentally stop
  8. LOVES to chew on rawhides -- does have a tendency to also enjoy chewing/shredding fabric/paper items, however, these are not nearly as expensive as hard things such as remotes and game controllers! And when he does get a hold on a towel for drying paws he rips it with such gusto!
  9. Crate trained with ease -- doesn't love the crate, but doesn't complain either.
  10. Has adopted foster mom's "four on the floor" policy -- doesn't jump up on visitors!
  11. Gets along with other dogs, cats, kids and of course LOVES people
  12. Hasn't had a seizure for ten days!
  13. Takes his phenobarb pills like they are treats
  14. Respects baby gates -- prefers that you stay on the side where he is, doesn't understand why you would leave even for a minute, he's a bit of a velcro boy
  15. Great combination of an older calmer dog with a younger playful dog

Did you notice how many things Toby loves? This is one happy and lovable guy!

Here are a couple pictures of Toby enjoying Sunday night football...or enjoying that there are a few extra people over to cuddle with him while they watch football...

Toby has had another busy week. He had two more seizures on Sunday so we took him to the vet on Monday and he was put on phenobarbital to control his seizures. The vet warned that the drug could make him a little “dopey” for awhile, however, we have not noticed any difference! He is still as playful and loving as ever! We will go back to the vet in a month to check his blood levels of the ‘phenobarb’ and get him all up to date on his shots. For anyone worried about giving pills, Toby could not be easier – he will literally take them right out of your hand, no problem.

Our resident Golden, Abby, is loving having Toby around. For an 8 year-old, Toby is super playful and lots of fun. They have been playing tug with rope toys and chasing each other around our big couch. They also both love playing fetch and take turns bringing the ball back. I think Toby would enjoy having another dog in his forever home, but he would be happy being an only child, too.

Toby is still learning the “inside rules.” He likes to pick up things like mittens and hats and deliver them to us – as if to say, “can I chew on this, please?” Of course, we take it away (he is learning “drop-it”) and give him something else – the man likes to chew. We have given him free roam of our bedroom at night instead of sleeping in his crate. If Toby had his way, he would be on our bed with us (right in between us), however, we just don’t have room for an 82.6 lb dog!

For anyone looking to stay warm this winter, Toby is your guy (It is -18F here in Rochester today!). Toby believes he is a lap dog. He loves to be petted, loves to cuddle, and he LOVES to give kisses. The more body contact, the better for this big guy. Yesterday my husband was kneeling down, working on installing a baby gate. Toby stood quietly behind him the whole time, unnoticed. Once my husband turned around, he got a big and sloppy surprise kiss! Toby wouldn’t stop there, though – he somehow maneuvered himself so that they were down in an all out embrace – and Toby was in heaven. Come and meet this sweet boy!
