From Toby's forever family...
We adopted Toby on March 12, 2010 from a great foster family in Rochester MN. During the first 4-5 weeks in his new home, Toby adapted well, enjoying his new yard, taking walks at the lake, and chasing his tennis ball. He had free roam of the house, and never bothered anything that didn’t belong to him.
Then thunderstorm season hit and everything changed. Thunder and lightning would cause Toby to panic. His body would physically shake; he would pant, pace, dig, and even make himself sick. We tried everything we could think of to calm him, but nothing worked. When storms hit while we were at work, we would come home to mass destruction. Several times the bottoms of doors were completely destroyed, vertical blinds ripped off the window and carpet ruined. We tried medication, music therapy, desensitization, the Thundershirt and many other suggestions to no avail. And while all of this was going on, his seizure activity was increasing and his blood tests showed the Phenobarbital he was taking was causing liver function damage.
We were committed to making Toby’s life better, and I’m happy to say, we’ve made huge strides since last Spring. He is in a crate during the day while we’re at work (we waited until thunderstorm season ended to reintroduce the crate so he wouldn’t associate it with storms or have more stress to deal with). His crate is his happy and safe place. He eagerly goes in every morning and is totally calm when we arrive home after work. If he feels a storm approaching during the night, he wakes me up (we do not need a weather radio anymore – Toby is much more accurate!) and we head to the crate. He began taking a new seizure medication called Zonisamide, which seems to be controlling his seizures and helping to reverse the liver function damage (his last blood test came back with good levels). Our foster, Mercy 10-191 was adopted over the Christmas holidays, and I know Toby misses her as much as we do, but all in all, he is back to being the happy, loving boy he was when he first arrived.
It has been a huge learning experience for us, but we knew Toby was a great guy that needed someone to take the time to work through his issues. In his previous life, when problems arose, he was passed on to the next owner. RAGOM and his foster parents took him in and began the process of giving him the life he deserved, and we are happy we were able to follow through and make it happen. Toby is definitely a “happy ending’ Golden!
