Kaylee 09-407

Profile

Welcome to the Ragom family Kaylee! Kaylee is almost 9 months old (DOB:1/29/09), she is a golden mix and I would believe she will always be a smaller dog, as of now she is weighing in at 34lbs.

We do not know a lot about Kaylee's background as she was brought into the Golden Valley Humane Society as a cruelty case, along with other dogs that were kept outdoors. As with cruelty cases you can suspect it was neglect, no human contact, possible like a PM puppy would be. She is not potty trained, does not know what stairs are, but doors have been ok, she ate some dinner but not all of it, she has been drinking out of the water bowls. She has her own kennel, and really seems to like it, or is willing to accept it.

She came into our home very scared and shy. As my daughter was not with me for this pick up, I was labeled the bad guy and Kaylee warmed up to my daughter. I finally found a smaller collar to get on her and to stay on her. Coming into this home with three larger GR's was very intimidating for Kaylee, but they all have accepted each other and seem willing to play.

She does not like going outside on the long line, that I use with all new dogs till we are all comfortable in the fenced backyard. Kaylee has become very daring and very curious, after dinner she started playing with the toys. She found two stuffed animals with squeakers inside of them, but did not know this till she was chewing on them and they squeaked. Was it funny to watch her! As I sit here writing this update, she is on the couch sleeping.

Kaylee's medical issues are very simple: she is positive for Lyme Disease, she is being treated for her rear leg lameness and you would never know this is what she has. My understanding is her meds run for about 10 days and then she will be done. But not to say that at some point in her life that she may not go temporarily lame again and need more meds.

Kaylee's needs for a furever home are: Physical fenced yard, another resident dog to show her how to become confident, and someone to love her.

Updates

We are so sorry about not getting an update to Kaylee's site for sometime, but FM and I have been very busy, work, shopping, the holidays, family, well you know how the holidays are.

My FS 09-322 Misty was adopted in early December to a wonderful family and they have a big brother for her to play with, I can only hope that Kaylee finds a family to call her own someday. So I miss Misty lots, she was so fun to play with, but I'm happy for her.

When Kaylee first came in being that she is a mix breed and still a puppy, I was not sure how big she may get. Well Kaylee has been fed a high protein diet and she has grown taller around 2 inches, she is not filling out too much yet as she runs everything off in playing with her FS's.

Kaylee has all kinds of cute with antics. She loves to crawl into my lap in the evening and just snuggle. When I come home after work and she is in her crate (all day), and as I'm getting out of the car I can hear her barking and as I'm unlocking the backdoor she gets very quiet, and as I walk in the door and she sees me or any other family member she just starts with a high pitch squeak/bark of delight. She really is so cute.

We have given Kaylee some free roam time when we are running short errands, and some trips we come back and she has been good and other times she has been bad. One trip the week of Christmas, she decided that one of the strings of lights on the tree was not needed or it was brothering her. She chewed the string in half, at least the tree lights were not on; but now go find a string of lights and not pay an arm or leg. I looked at Menards, Target, Wal-Mart, and even the hardware store and everybody had sold out of the lights that I needed. Thank goodness for neighbors, they had what I needed; just one 100 bulb string of simple lights. So needless to say Kaylee is back into her crate til the holidays are over.

Kaylee has had free roam at night but about three weeks ago she decided that sleeping was not her thing to do. I think she was looking or waiting for Santa. She spent that night in her crate and was just fine. So since then she has been back into her crate at night and sleeping most of the night. When we are home she still loves to camp out with her FS in her crate (with no door). The good thing about Kaylee is she is young and she has learned that when I open her crate door she just goes right in and I never have to ask her to "kennel up". Her crate is her safe zone.

Christmas was fun once again this year with the dogs opening their presents and at the end of January Kaylee gets her first birthday on the 29th. She will get home-made doggie cookies and more toys to open. But do not tell her it will be a surprise.

We babysat for 09-275 Heather on a Sunday, Dec 20 to Monday evening; that was a very fun adventure. We put a long lead line on Heather to made sure she did not escape out anywhere in the fence line, you just never know. But if we would of known that Kaylee was going to be her assigned guardian, she would carry the lead line like a leash and take Heather all over the backyard. See the attached pictures and have a good laugh.

Kaylee has also learned that if she stands close to the back door, she can escape into the free world outside of the fenced yard. My yard is not small, we have just under an acre fenced and the backyard is huge, most dogs just love the size. But with Kaylee sneaking out, the good thing is that she has been coming back in once she finds FM.

Having the huge backyard, we have LOTS of rabbits under the pine trees and she just hates them. So she goes outside and heads straight for the pine trees to search them out and chase. She has yet gotten one, but time will tell as spring and babies start rolling around.

Kaylee's needs for a furever home would be:

  • fur sister/brother...to show her the proper way of life
  • fenced yard...to play in with FS or FB
  • no cats as she dislikes my cat and the feelings are mutual from Boscoe
  • very young children may be a problem, as they always have food in hands and she is a very good stealer. But on the other hand she is good with children to play with.
  • Kaylee has a high energy level and must be played with in order to get her to sleep at night

If you think Kaylee would fit into your home, please contact your placement coord.
