Chazz 09-387

Profile

Introducing another new member of the RAGOM clan --- Chazz!  This big, handsome dude is probably 5-6 years old and weighs in at a lean 77 lbs.  He was a stray in western MN so nothing is known about his background but obviously has experience living indoors.  Chazz is one of the sweetest, most easy-going dogs you could ever hope to meet!  He greets everyone, whether 2- or 4-legged,  with a wagging tail & polite sniffing.  The vet & groomer both commented on what a great temperament he's got, despite what they were doing to him!

Chazz is not yet available for adoption.  The poor guy has a bladder infection that we need to get under control -- before he can be neutered.  He also seems to have some pain & weakness in a back leg that we need to figure out.  But that doesn't mean he won't be at the picnic.  We've been talking about all the dogs that'll be there to check out, and all the people who'll be there with patting hands ready, and Chazz would hate to miss all the fun.  So if you want to meet this gentle giant of a dog, here's who to watch for:

Another trait I need to mention is that Chazz is camera shy :o  I'm having a heck of a time getting good pictures since he lays down or looks away when he sees the camera.  Hopefully will get some good shots at the picnic!

Hi Chazz fans! So much news it's hard to know where to start. Guess the first thing should be that his bladder infection has cleared up and his prostate has shrunk down so he's finally available for adoption! Which leads to the next bit of news... Chazz has already met his forever family!! He'll be going home on Wednesday with the S family -- his own mom & dad to walk him and four little kids to hug & pat him :)

Everything else pales in comparison but I'm happy to report that Chazz did get to enjoy some of the Golden life during his time with me, sooo glad it wasn't all trips to the vet, meds and naps. He had a few Woof-Dah days:

And his Reiki sessions:

And lots of walks. And even the chance to meet a bunch of new Chazz fans when we went to Leashes and Leads rescue event near Rochester (for those of you down that way - ya gotta check that place out if you haven't been there yet!). I was surprised at his energy level, he kept heading off to explore the store -- a zillion new smells (many of which were right there at nose level), almost that many other dogs to meet, and even more humans to pat and admire him! Lots of people mentioned that his pics don't do him justice, he's really a gorgeous dog! Too bad I didn't get a pic of the big lug sprawled on the floor just waiting for the next person to give him a good belly rub!

My apologies to all the RAGOM fans who've been waiting for a Chazz update, my skill at procrastination is legendary! Don't know that Chazz would consider his first couple of weeks with me as 'the good life' I promised him when he became a RAGOM dog :( His life as a "rescue" started with a visit to the vet for a check-up & microchipping. Then another trip to the vet for exam and test for a bladder infection. Back to the vet a few days later after getting mugged by another dog! (A neighbor dog broke through its fence and bit Chazz on the nose! The poor guy also got a puncture wound to the third eyelid. Thank goodness everything is healing nicely.) Two days after that he was back again, this time to be neutered. And even with all the poking, prodding & palpating Chazz is still the sweetest and most laid-back dog!

Chazz is still unavailable for adoption. The vet took x-rays while Chazz was under for the neuter. The good news - no hip dysplasia! The bad news - he has significant arthritis in the last segment of his spine with some loss of muscle mass in his right hind leg. Don't know if it's pain or just tired but even a mile walk poops him out. Started him on glucosamine/chrondroitin/msm & fish oil supplements to help him be more comfortable on a good walk. He's also lucky enough to be getting Reiki treatments from another RAGOM volunteer! Here's the big guy after his first session :)

But the main reason Chazz remains 'unavailable' is that he's got an enlarged prostate. Vet didn't know if it was prostatitis, or due to not having been neutered, or something worse. The antibiotics for the bladder infection didn't reduce the size so it's not prostatitis. Now we're waiting 4-6 weeks to see the effects of no more testosterone. Vet said the prostate didn't feel lumpy or irregular shape so assuming it's not 'something worse' but won't know until early November. Please keep all paws crossed for him!

That's more than enough news about Chazz's problems ~ he has had some fun squeezed in between all the vet visits!

  • He had a great time at the RAGOM picnic last month, even got to meet some families during our turn in the 'meet the fosters' tent.

  • Chazz has been to Woof-Dah for doggie daycare :) He loves meeting other dogs so that must be heaven for him, so much sniffing to be done ~ leash-free!!
  • Play date with Chance, Tucker & Keenan who are good enough to share their fenced yard! Although Chazz doesn't actually play with other dogs, the freedom of being outside and NOT attached to a human has to be both exciting and relaxing!

Even though he's not officially available for adoption Chazz will be at Saturday's meet 'n' greet at the PetSmart in Plymouth! Hope to see you there!
