Almost a year after her sister and best friend Cedar (07-545) died, we lost our little Lady. She had been struggling with arthritis for a couple of years which had slowed her down and shortened our walks. After Cedar passed away, other health issues became much more prevalent and it became clear that Cedar had truly motivated Lady to keep truckin'. On a good day, Lady would make it around the block, but more often than not, getting to the end of the block was enough for her.
One morning in February, thankfully before we left for work, Lady collapsed suddenly in great pain. A large blood blister near her spleen had ruptured and she was bleeding internally. The thought of surgery on our girl - putting her in more pain when she lacked the strength to heal properly was unbearable. So sadly we said good bye to her at the clinic. The staff at Blue Pearl were great and we are grateful for their patience and compassion during a horrible situation.
Lady was known by all her human friends as "pretty Lady", "gentle Lady" or "regal Lady" as a result of her calm presence and comportment. She sat proudly to survey her domain. She was an expert at putting her paw on your knee, or nudging her nose under your hand, to remind you that she was in need of some pets and snuggle time. She enjoyed going to the marsh to run off-leash, swimming in a lake or river - delicately picking her way into the water until her body was eventually submerged, or playing fetch at the dog park with her ball. After awhile she'd had enough of the running and would drop the ball so she could massage her back.
Lady loved to play with her sister who she would grab by the collar and drag across the floor to instigate a wrestling match. Cedar was her protector and best friend and they explored, hunted, swam and ran together. We are happy knowing they are together again but miss our little Lady so much. She was with us for 9 years and will stay with us in spirit forever.

Lady's Diary...
Dear Diary,
Sorry I have not written in a long time. I left my home in Missouri and came to Minnesota a few weeks ago. I have come to live with a nice lady and two boy dogs by the names of Max and Duster. I have had some busy days since coming to live here. I have been to the doctor's office for shots and an operation. The nice lady gives me medicine because I have the diarrhea. They don't know yet why I get it. Some days I am fine and then I will have a couple of days where it is bad. So I have pills to take and special food to eat. The nice lady says that I will stay on this food for a while and then very slowly I will get to eat other food. I don't get to have treats very often which is a real bummer. They think I might have allergies - whatever that is.
At the doctor's office this last time I weighed 50 lbs. They were all happy since I was pretty skinny when I came to live here. You could see my ribs and hip bones. My hair was very dry too. But with the good food and lots of hugs and kisses my hair is feeling soft again. My nice lady says that I am a pretty girl. I have big brown eyes and light brown hair.
Did I ever tell you Diary that I have been a Mom more times than I can remember and I am only 3 years old? I sure hope all my babies are doing okay without me.
The boy dog Duster is only 4 months old and I like playing with him. He is a really little guy only weighs about 5 lbs. I am very careful when I play with him. Now when I play with Max it is a different story. Max is a big guy and likes to wrestle. At first he kind of scared me. But know I follow him everywhere. The nice lady says that when I go to my forever home I will have to have a fur brother or sister to play with. I am still learning how to do things like get in and out of a car. Go through doorways and go for walks.
The other night we went to the toy and food store. All that food and I could not have any of it!! It wasn't fair! But the nice lady let me pick out my own toy. I got a ball that squeaked. It was really fun until Max got hold of it and chewed the squeakier out. I was sad. It just isn't as much fun if it doesn't squeak. At the store I was really scared at first. It was noisy and that was scary. There were lots of things I had never seen before. I walked around a lot with my tail between my legs. Some people came up to meet me. I am not scared with that. I love when people pet me. I love pets and kisses. I like to give kisses back too. It is the loud noises that I don't like too much. Max was having a great time so I decided it was okay there. The nice lady said she would bring me again. I don't think I will be as scared the next time.
The nice lady keeps trying to take my picture. I don't like that either. I really hate the flash. It reminds me of lightning. The nice lady says in my next home I absolutely must have a fenced yard. She thinks I might run away when I get scared of something if I don't have a fenced yard.
Living here has been fun. We get to stay in the kitchen when the lady goes to work. We wrestle and play with toys. We take naps too. At first the mean lady, opps I mean nice lady put me in a cage when she left. I don't like the cage. I get very anxious. I'm no Doctor but, I think that is what was giving me the diarrhea. The nice lady was very sad when she came home. She felt really bad that I was sick while she was gone. Since I have been able to roam free in the kitchen with Max and Duster I have been much more relaxed.
Speaking of the kitchen, the nice lady caught me with my front paws on the counter one day. She said that was naughty. Hey Diary a girl gets curious. I was just checking things out!
I have met lots of great people and friends of Max. I have played with big dogs and little dogs. I have met some kids that I like too. The really little ones kind of scare me.
Well Diary, I have a big day tomorrow. I am going to be at the RAGOM picnic. I guess there will be lots of dogs and people. I might be kind of scared but the nice lady said that I will only get over my fears if I go to places I have not been before. She said that her and Max will be right by my side to protect me.
I will write later to tell you all about it.
