Shiloh 09-326

Profile
Shiloh is a 9 month old PB golden male. He weighs 58 pounds. He is the color of gold/and medium red. Shiloh has a block head and wrinkly face that is too sweet for words. He was surrendered by a family in Minnesota.
Shiloh was not neutered when he came to RAGOM but that has been taken care of this week. He is recovering nicely from the surgery. He will need a second round of shots on 8/14/2009 and is in the process on being de-wormed for case of round worms.
Shiloh's personality is one of sweet and sour chicken. Meaning he is a chicken when it comes to anything new happening in his world and when that happens he goes from sweet to sour. He will do defensive barking and make lunging actions. He sounds kind of scary. But it really is a case of badly needed socialization. He needs his confidence to be built up at the same time he needs to learn to be calm. That can be the tough part for a 9 month old puppy. Lots of exercise will be called for at his forever home.
I don't want to give you the wrong impression. For the most part he is a happy-go-lucky puppy. He loves to fetch a ball, wrestle with resident Max and chew sticks.
He does great with kids and loves all the attention. When he is excited he does a lot of jumping and making contact with his teeth on your hands. He does not bite, but he needs to learn this behavior is not okay and it will take some work to again make him understand without traumatizing him. He will definitely need an obedience class and one-on-one work.
Shiloh loves to play with other dogs. He did great with Emily, a Schnauzer who was visiting with us. He went to visit Duncan, a PB golden at another house and got along splendidly. Maize, the Golden Doodle came to meet him and again he did wonderful. He shows the play bow when playing. He will demonstrate the dominance posture of going on the back of male dogs. Knowing that, he does again need to be taught not to do that. Hopefully having been neutered, that will help. He and Max eat in the same room without any resource guarding. At first he would claim me as his own and would growl and show his teeth if Max came to get pets too. Corrective action and showing there is enough love to go around has eliminated that behavior.
Shiloh does well riding in the vehicle. At first, he is a little unsure about getting in, but has been getting better. He barked quite a bit at a couple of boys riding bikes past us at a stop light. He might chase bikes, skateboards etc, if not on a leash or in a fenced yard. Obedience training and one-on-one training will help to curb that.
He loves to have his belly rubbed. I have also been giving him body massages. This is good for him in a couple of ways. More hands-on contact the better. That helps him to know that the human hand gives good things and not to be afraid. He has shown some crouching action or shying away from hands coming near him. This will also help with Vet visits. Plus the body massages calm him and it is just a great way to spend some time together.
That's all for now. Watch for more updates as this little guy learns his P's & Q's and blossoms into the beautiful Golden he can be.
