Goldie 09-171

Let me introduce you to the newest member of the RAGOM family...Goldie! She lives up to this name. She is everything we love about golden retrievers: sweet, playful, loving, etc.!

Goldie came Sunday afternoon after a whirlwind of transporters. She would like to take a moment to say a BIG "Thank You" to Sue O. and Mike and Ester M. for pulling together the fastest transport to get this girl from North Dakota to Minneapolis on very short notice. You all are her heroes! Thank You.

Now, let me tell you a little bit about Goldie's background. Her former human daddy passed away a few weeks ago and the family thought the best thing for Goldie would be to find a loving home through RAGOM. I know it must have been very hard on them and I'm sure Goldie misses them as well.

They will be happy to know that Goldie is transitioning very well with her new foster sister, Savannah. They are like two peas in a pod. They jump and play with their forearms, trying to knock each other down. Of course, foster mom is still unsure why dogs (any dogs) insist on running and playing up and down the hallways in the house instead of outside! Oh well, I guess outside is simply to take care of business.

Goldie did get a bath tonight and tolerated it about as much as FM loves giving them! She is now beautiful and fluffy. Would you like to meet her? Please contact your placement advisor to set up a meeting. She is up-to-date with all of her shots and is already spayed. Once she gets her RAGOM check-up, she will be available for adoption. I will write more as we get to know her

Hello Everyone! I hope everyone is having a wonderful, relaxing Mother's Day. I'm so glad to have a FM to share this day. Well I've been busy this week. Turns out that FM got a little ahead of herself with the free roam thing. She knows how much I don't like the kennel, so she's been leaving me out for small doses of time. Remember last Saturday's incident when I closed myself in the upstairs bathroom and didn't destroy anything? Well, FM thought when she goes to work is about the same amount of time I was out that night, so she left me out free roam while she went to work on Tuesday. Turns out I get a little curious. Where did FM go? Under every area rug in the house? No--I moved all of them out of place. Inside these 9 X 12 manilla envelopes? Not so much--I shredded about 20 of them onto the floor in our office. Inside both showers? Not in there either--I tore the bottom of the shower liners in both bathrooms. Despite my best efforts in trying to find her, FM wasn't anywhere in the house. When FM finally came home, she was wondering about the state of the house. Turns out she wasn't too mad since I didn't destroy anything super important, but she started putting me back in the kennel...just in case. The bottom line is: I love people and I miss them when they leave!! I need to be in a home where I get to hang out with people most of the day. I can stay in the kennel, but I'm not my happiest when I'm in there.

I went yesterday to the RAGOM Volunteer meeting where I met lots of other golden retrievers. It's like a sea of goldens and I really wanted to meet them all. I enjoyed sitting next to (or on) my FM's lap during the meeting. I was such a good girl. I didn't even make one peep! So sweet. On the way home, FM took the car through the car wash. Not sure if I had ever been in one of those things before, but FM was laughing at me as I walked around the windows as the sprayer went by. I wasn't freaked out at all, but was rather intrigued by it!

I think FM got a couple of pictures of me "smiling" when my FD came home. It looks pretty scary, but it's just me smiling. If you saw it in person you would laugh out loud. FM does every time I do it to her! She says "I'm so cute"--I know that!!

Speaking of cute...Apparently my new favorite movie is "Happy Feet". Up until now, I haven't really noticed the TV. FM had this movie on the other night while she was doing stuff. I just kept tilting my head and even jumping up and down as those penguins moved around on the screen. Those are interesting creatures!!

Also, there was a nice RAGOM volunteer that made a video from the dog wash at Walser a couple weekends ago. The video has lots of dogs enjoying their bath, but the very end of the video has FM and me walking out. Do you see how wonderfully I walk on a Gentle Leader?

It's me, Goldie! Did you guys get out and enjoy the wonderful, sunny weekend? I sure did. Yesterday I spent the day hanging out in the backyard while my foster parents did yard work. That sure looked like a lot of work if you ask me. I know I had much more fun playing with all the "outside" toys or just chillin' under the deck. Later in the day, some neighborhood kids (7-years and up) came over to say "hi". I just wagged my tail and had lots of fun with them.

Speaking of tail wagging...turns out I can't stop that thing from moving back and forth. FM keeps saying I must be such a happy dog. I really get excited when FM says we are going for a car ride or for a walk. I love both those things. She takes my foster sister and me for a walk and she says I'm doing great on the Gentle Leader. All three of us just walk side by side. I know we look super cute walking in the neighborhood!

I'm getting more used to the crate (but it's still not my favorite). FM started to let me free roam in small doses when she leaves to do errands. As you would expect, everything is just perfect when she gets home. I have to tell you what happened to me on Saturday night. Foster Mom and Dad went out to dinner and left the two dogs out free in the house. Somehow I managed to put myself in the upstairs, guest bathroom and shut the door on myself. Of course, that just meant that I had to wait until they got home. I think FM was a little nervous at first when I didn't come when she called, but how could I? I was stuck in a bathroom. I'm gonna try not to do that one again, but you never know...it could be my new trick!!

Anyway, life here is great, but I sure would like to find my forever home. Could that be with you? If you would like to meet me, please contact your placement advisor.

Goldie says "Happy Earth Day"! She went to the vet today and did superbly. Her heartworm and fecal samples were negative-which is great. She does need to lose about 5-6 pounds to be at her ideal weight. On Sunday, she came in with a yeast infection in her paw which is being treated with antibiotics and the vet said it was clearing up nicely. We have about another week on that and it should be all gone. Other than those couple of things, she looks very healthy.

There are a couple of things that I have figured out about Goldie.

  1. She is housebroken, and has yet to have an accident in the house.
  2. She will definitely NEED a fence. It turns out she is a bit of a bolter. I found out the hard way last night. She snuck passed me as I was trying to put the lead on her to go out to use the bathroom. I proceeded to run (and I mean run) through the neighbors backyard. I quickly realized that wasn't going to work, so I turned around in hopes that she would chase me. She did and I was able to get her back safe into the house. Lesson learned there!
  3. She knows very few commands, if any, so we are starting with the basics (sit, down, stay, okay). She will need a family that is committed to taking her to obedience training and possibly a few sets of classes. She needs to learn the basic commands to help keep her safe.
  4. Cats are probably okay. I tested Goldie with the cat at the vet's office and she was curious, but didn't go crazy over it. She also just kind of stares with inquiry at the cat next door. For those reasons, I think she could go into a house with a cat. As for dogs, she reads dog signs very well. In our house, our resident backs down, so Goldie just feels like she can just take toys that may not belong to her. We are working on the sharing of toys between the dogs. She also doesn't like to give them up, so we are working on "drop it". I don't know how she would react to a more strong-willed dog, if she would back down or not.
  5. Crates are a work in progress. Although she doesn't particularly like the crate, once she is in there, she is fine. RAGOM was told that she has some separation anxiety, but does well once in the crate. She does whimper a bit when I first put her in the crate to go to work. A house where she doesn't have to be alone for an entire work day would probably be best for her. We (Goldie and FM) have started getting her more comfortable in the crate by using one that does not have the top. I have attached a picture that shows our "training". She does go in, gets some snuggle time with me, then turns on out. It will take some time for her to feel comfortable for extended periods of time.
  6. She will make a great family dog. She has met the neighbor kids and did wonderfully. She is kind of strong, so kids around 7 and older would probably be best. If a child holding Goldie lost control of a leash, she could bolt and wouldn't know a command to come back.
  7. Lastly, she has this crazy greeting. When someone first meets her or when we come home from work, she snarles her snout. It looks very scary, but she is actually smiling. She is wagging her tail and bowing down her head as she says "hello" to you. It is so cute. A picture would never do it justice. You have to see it to appreciate it. Would you like to see it? If so, contact your placement advisor.
