Archer has been with our family for less than 48 hours, and what amazing leaps forward we're already seeing!

We picked up Archer Saturday evening after his long trip to Minnesota from Missouri. At 20 weeks of age, he and his littermates are recovering from kennel cough and pneumonia. Upon meeting Archer, he avoided being touched by hiding under a chair and curling his body up to become very small. That first evening, when we interacted with him, he held his body very still, hunched over with tailed wrapped up against his belly. When we touched him he became limp.

We chose to hand feed Archer for the first few days in order to encourage bonding and build trust. While he was hesitant at first, he quickly became interested in the food, and became more accepting of our touch and interaction. As he began to relax I started asking him to work for his food by calmly calling him to me by name. When he came, he was rewarded with kibble and praise. I then moved and called him again... this is a game he seems to enjoy and we continue to play. Archer is quickly learning his name and learning to come when called.

House training is going extremely well... not one accident in the house! And while we take him out frequently during the day, he has asked to go out twice when he needed to go. Our resident dog has been very helpful in mentoring this behavior; Archer watches him closely.

Archer sleeps in his kennel at night and has slept through the night both nights without a sound. He enjoys the fleece blanket he was given and a stuffed bunny that he snuggles up with for sleeping and comfort.

While he enjoys snuggling his bunny, he seems uncertain what to do with toys and is hesitant to "play". However, yesterday we threw the tennis ball for our resident dog and after half a dozen tosses with Archer watching, Archer tore off after the ball and got it! (See triumphant "I have the ball" photo above).

Yesterday I bathed and groomed Archer. He was patient through the bath, and embraced being held in warm towels while drying. (We wanted to make sure he didn't catch a chill since he's recovering from the respiratory condition.) He quickly accepted his nails being filed with the Pedi Paws trimmer, and fell into a deep sleep while being brushed.

From the minute we brought him home with us, his favorite person has been our seven year old son. He seeks reassurance from him while accepting his leadership. As it happens, Grandma and Grandpa were visiting this weekend and Archer began to solicit attention from both of them as well. It's nice to know that Grandma's crutches and Grandpa's height and deep voice were just fine with Archer.

The only barking Archer has done since joining us is an occasional alert bark in response to what seems to be new sounds. He quiets down immediately when we "shush" him and tell him it's okay. As we mentioned earlier, he has whined twice to ask us to take him outside.

Today we went to the vet, and while Archer will continue his antibiotics for five more days, the vet said he was very pleased with Archer's health and that Archer is a wonderful dog who will make a great family pet! Archer did great at the vet, accepting the exam as well as the microchip, even relaxing enough to carry his stuffed bunny around the exam room.

In the coming days we'll continue to work with Archer on socialization so that he can deepen his trust and bonding with humans. We are also continuing to socialize him to new experiences and sounds such as positive associations with car rides, the sound of the vacuum cleaner, going up and down stairs, through doorways... and more! Archer started out with us very timid, and yet he continuously, courageously and enthusiastically tries new things.

Please watch for more updates and information as we get to know Archer!

We have had the pleasure of dogsitting for Archer a number of times and we just wanted everyone to know if you pass on this dog because he had distemper, or because he has some nerve damage you are making a big mistake! We had our 8 month old grandaughter over the weekend and she could take toys out of Archer's mouth and climb all over him -- he would just wag his tail and let her do it. Archer, Kyna (the resident dog) and Salty (our daughter's dog) played great all weekend. We could pass out Kongs with peanut butter and they would just pass them around without any fights. What a great dog! He would do great in any home; he is a very well behaved puppy.

Archer just returned from a week and a half enjoying his summer vacation with his friends Kyna and Salty Dog. Here's a photo from the festivities showing that of all the tennis balls in the house, only one was the BEST... of course the one the other dog has.

Archer is doing great, enjoying summer, walks, laying in the sun... then the shade... then the sun... While he avoided water during his first few months, we walked upon a funny scene the other day after a good rain. We found Archer laying in a storage bin lid full of water, splashing and wagging his tail playfully drawing the attention of our resident dog. What a goofball!

Archer is still waiting for his forever home. While his medical history is daunting, daily life with Archer today is a breeze. If you're interested in meeting Archer please let your placement person know.

Yesterday we all spent the day out on the farm... and what a beautiful day it was! Sunshine, misty rain, sunshine... chickens, chickens, chickens. Archer did a fantastic job of accepting that it's not his job to supervise these chickens. I expected him to show an irresistible interest, and while he was interested at first he quickly accepted the "leave it" and willingly walked away with me. Yet another example of how quick Archer is to learn and his eagerness to please.

Archer loves to be outside, whether running after a tennis ball, wrestling with others dogs or simply locating a shady spot next to the picnic table for a nice nap on a summer afternoon. He also very much enjoys going for walks, although on these hot summer days a fifteen or twenty minute walk seems to be plenty. While Archer will always be a carrier of Distemper, he is in great health and we're working to build up his strength and endurance. He will happily go go go... which can then bring his tremors on more strongly. We try to find a happy medium by letting him set his own pace while being aware of how much might be too much. Even when he wears himself out, he bounces right back with a good nap... but then don't we all.

If you're looking for a young, affectionate, smart dog to enjoy sharing activities with... Archer may be the dog for you. He loves being with the family... he enjoys getting out and about... and yet because of his bumpy first few months of life he is a mellow guy - especially for a nine month old pup. He looks forward to walks and to being active, but without needing long durations of intense exercise. I think he's more interested in family time and a short walk than to Agility or Fly Ball and a long run. This makes Archer a great match for many of you out there... so if you're interested in meeting him please contact placement.

Happy Fourth Of July, everyone! Archer is enjoying summer... He loves to be outside, bask in the sun, explore, go for walks, play with other dogs and play with the kids. Today, for the first time, he brought me a tennis ball and initiated a game of fetch! We've encouraged him to play ball before, but he showed little interest. Apparently after watching our resident dog enjoy a good game of ball, he decided he wanted in on the fun. This is another of several examples of the way Archer learns by watching. (Like learning to ring the bell when he wants or needs to go outside!)

Archer seems unphased by the fireworks and firecrackers so far this 4th of July week. He slept through a slew of bottle rockets in the neighborhood last night... and this morning has responded with only a few reserved growls to kids setting off firecrackers (nice, at 8 am, eh?). Good to see that Archer seems comfortable with the noise!

We received the news last night that one of Archer's sponsors passed away unexpectedly. We would like to thank Mary Jane Rizella for her generous and compassionate support of rescue work, her support of Archer's brother Gage during his short life, and her support of Archer. Archer's story is one of survival, due to the availability of ongoing veterinary care. Without this type of ongoing financial support, this care would not have been possible for Archer. Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones.

The other night when I let Archer out just before bed, he was hopping around in the dark. I went out to see what he was up to and laughed out loud because he was chasing a moth. He chased it for a while, trotting behind it, jumping up to paw at it with his front paws, trotting after it again. It was wonderful to see him express such whimsical play!

The next day I was doing some yard work when I heard mischief happening. I turned around to see Archer proudly trotting about the yard like this:

What a goofball. I'm thrilled to see him acting like such a goofball though; this guy has been through the wringer and finally seems to be feeling better and coming into his own.

The vet suggested that we keep Archer's activity low for a week to ten days while he recovers from the neutering... which of course is easier said than done. We knew that he was feeling better the day after surgery when he went into the entry way where the leashes hang and began nosing his lease vehemently while vocalizing. He was ready to get out and about... so we went on a brief adventure in the neighborhood.

His post op check up was on Friday, and he passed with flying colors!

Thanks to our sponsor for sponsoring Archer on behalf of the guests of the Rydel/McGarthwaiteWedding! We appreciate your support!

Just a funny to share...

I came home from running a few errands to find this...

Apparently Archer either didn't agree with the title or really "devoured" the reading. Heh heh.

Tomorrow will be a big day for Archer as he goes in to get neutered. While that's a big day for anyone, Archer's neurological symptoms are intensified by stress so we're working with his vet to maintain as calm an experience as possible. As such, I'll pick him up after surgery to spend the night at home rather than in the kennels.

Thanks again to the sponsor who has sponsored Archer on behalf of the guests of the Rydel/McGarthwaiteWedding! We appreciate your support!

Archer drew the attention and smiles of several other parents at school yesterday morning when, after watching our kiddo go into school, he stood facing the doors, planted himself firmly in a sit and refused to walk away. After all, his boy disappeared somewhere inside those doors.

We did eventually return home from the walk, and after hanging some laundry out to dry I began to gather the dog toys in the yard for washing. I found myself wondering just how many balls and stuffed animals there were... until I began seeing double. Except it wasn't me... it was Archer... emptying the basket at roughly the same rate I was filling it... Bah ha!

Breaking news - Archer has been Sponsored on behalf of the guests of the Rydel/McGarthwaite Wedding! Big, big thanks for sponsoring him! Archer has been a unique case; he's the first dog surviving with Distemper that his vet has seen in fifteen years... even the neurologist at the U of M invited his students in to meet Archer, telling them they may not have the chance to meet another dog living with Distemper. He's a real champ and having a sponsor will really help with the medical treatments that have assisted Archer persevering through this virus. Thank you.

As many of you are aware, we've been observing Archer over the last four weeks in order to try to determine whether his neurological symptoms are stabilizing, progressing or retreating. Some days Archer is all playfully fierce puppy (see the pics below from his visit with RAGOM pup Max)... and other days his tremors are more pronounced and he vocalizes some discomfort. This makes it a bit tough to decipher how he's feeling as it seems to vary from day to day, so we continue to observe. Despite his struggles Archer reminds us multiple times daily that he is a seven month old, inquisitive, smart and playful (okay... even mischievous) pup.

Archer has been enjoying warm sunbeams in the backyard over the last few days. He enjoys hanging out in the backyard when the kids are playing... playing and wrestling with our resident dog (sometimes in the mud - whoo hoooo!)... and now that he has all his vaccinations walks are a grand new adventure. He’s doing great on the leash and heeling at my side comes pretty naturally to him.

We have an appointment with the neurologist at the U of M on Wednesday to check out the residual tremors that seem to be left from Archer’s bout with Distemper. While they don’t bother him at all while he’s active they do seem uncomfortable when he lays down to rest. We’re checking out various options to help him manage the tremors so that he can enjoy rest and sleep as much as he enjoys playing and exploring. More after Wednesday’s appointment...

As I write this, Archer is sleeping in a warm spring sunbeam in the backyard. He is one sweet, happy boy.

This morning he met a friend of ours and her two year old daughter, whom he greeted with tail wags and attempted face licks... no barking and not one jump! Wow. My friend commented on what a nice, gentle boy Archer is. That’s for sure.

We discovered last night that Archer enjoys singing along during violin practice. Er... I wonder if Joshua Bell or Isaac Pearlman have ever considered adding vocals to their repertoire... Anyway, I brought him downstairs to hang out with me while E finished practicing, and the serenade was over.

Yesterday was our son’s first day back to school after spring break, and his first day away from Archer. As you might recall from our first update, Archer took an immediate trust and liking to E. One way he seemed to process this difference was initiating multiple games of chase with me...or maybe it was “keep away”, come to think of it. Anyway, he kept taking my stuff... which was the perfect motivation to pick up around the house and take the opportunity to teach by trading Archer his stuff for my stuff. He actually does know which toys are his and rarely chews on someone else’s things. I think the game yesterday was his way of initiating playful interaction with me, and his frolicsome behavior lets me know that he’s feeling good. When E came home from school, Archer ran up to him with tail wagging, plopped down at his feet toe to toe and watched him intently. Archer then shadowed E as they played in the backyard.

As you see in the pictures, he is an active, energetic, loving pup.

Saturday, April 11, 2009

Hello again... well, this week has been a week of mixed emotions. On the one hand, it’s been wonderful getting to know Archer and seeing him gain the trust to blossom into a puppy that chases and wrestles our resident dog (who’s four times his size!)... who comes at a run when we call him now... who actively competes for greetings when we come home... and (perhaps the most surprising of all) has taught himself to ring our resident dogs’ bell to go outside!

Archer is an affectionate, joyful, mellow and S-M-A-R-T pup! (And we had to laugh when reading Koda’s update because Archer also has a most favorite bunny, though his is of the stuffed variety.)

And, in the midst of this joy came the sad news that we’ve lost Archer’s sister, Luca (09-123). This is the second of the five puppies in this litter that have succumbed to what may be Distemper. (Gage passed away just before transport to Minnesota from Missouri.) Archer appears healthy, eating well, playing boisterously, soliciting snuggles and exploring and learning all sorts of new things. While he appears healthy, it is of great concern that all the pups in this litter may have Distemper. Until we know more, we will wait to list Archer available for adoption. We will continue to place updates for Archer, and in the meantime ask that you keep Archer, Monroe and Koda in your thoughts.
