Chief (Max 09-051)

Profile

Max arrived at his foster home at 6pm yesterday and we did a meet and greet with our resident dogs in our fenced front yard. He was nervous but accepted all of the sniffing like the wonderful guy that he is. He has a slight limp on his right front foot that we will have our vet check out at his appointment this week. Other than that he seems to be in good shape. He did raise his leg and mark on my husband's shirt on the back of a kitchen chair when he first came in the house, but since then there has been no inside marking. Right now he is startled easily by our dogs barking at outside noises, but I think that he will soon get used to our barky group. We will be giving him a bath this afternoon and check for any other injuries, but he seems fine.

Max is a dark red Golden with a regal looking face and manner. We think that he is between 1 and 2 years old. He will be neutered this week. He is a very friendly guy and loves to be petted. He will make cute little noises when you pet him and talk to him and lean into you. I think that he weighs around 60 pounds, but we will find out for sure when we go to the vet this week. Max got along well with the dogs and cats at the GS's home. He got along great with the GS's children ranging in age from 6yrs to 13yrs old. He walks all right on a leash, but will pull a little at times. We are working on house training as he was always outside at the GS's house. We will be working on obedience training with him. He doesn't know any commands yet. He slept fine in his kennel last night, but it took a little while for him to settle down. I will send in another update after his neuter.

From Chief (fka Max)...

Hi Everyone,

Mom and Dad said I could do my own update this time. I'm now called "Chief" after my dad's Navy days. I really like my new name and have adjusted well to my new home. I've been here since February and have total run of the house, day and night. My mom and dad both work during the day. Dad travels out of town quite a bit so I spend all my time getting spoiled by mom. Dad tells me mom has wrecked me. I wasn't allowed on the furniture or bed when I first came here, but with dad out of town all the time, mom started to let me come up and visit with her. Now I'm up here all the time, and dad doesn't mind now, he knows how warm I am to snuggle with. He told me I make it hard to get out of bed on the weekends when he is home because I like to snuggle so much.

I have learned to sit, stay, lay down, and now we are working on bringing back the toys I retrieve when they are thrown. I am tied up when I go out side because I like to run. Dad is going to install an invisible fence and train me to the yard, I'm looking forward to that so I can roam more. I get to ride in the truck and really like the wind blowing in my face. Mom and dad get a kick out of my lips and ears blowing in the wind.

I went fishing in a boat for the first time this summer. I really like those lures they throw out there. So much in fact, I jumped in the water after them when they got back to the boat. I didn't realize the water was that deep! Dad laughed and pulled me back in the boat. I got him for laughing though, shook water all over him!!! I like those fish, I tried to eat a bass, but dad said they tasted better after they were cooked. He was right! I can't wait to go again. Enough for now, I hear my food dish being filled.

From Chief's forever family...

We really love "Chief", he has been a blessing to our family since the day we picked him up. I told my wife that I always thought the American dream was owning our own house, land, and having a dog. We're now living that dream!!! I'm trying to talk her into another fur friend so I can have one for myself this time. Here are some pictures of our boy relaxing. Thank you Ragom for all you do with these wonderful animals!!!

Here is an update on Chief (Max 09-051):

Hi everyone,

Dad said I could write this update, he's tired. He said I have him worn out already! My name used to be Max, but my new Dad (Scott) and Mom (Cindy) changed my name. Dad said it has to be Chief, something about his time spent in the US Navy (23 years). He told me he was a "Master Chief" and I couldn't out rank him. He said Mom already holds that position! I had a long 7 hour ride from Iowa to my new home in Minnesota. I was comfortable riding as you can tell by the picture! Dad stopped quite often and let me explore on the way. We had a GReat time. I was given lots of treats and love, and I even had some people food. Did I mention I was given lots of love! After we arrived at my new home I finally met my Mom. It was Love at first sight, she said I was a handsome fellow! I think Dad was jealous. I'm not conceited or spoiled, but I could learn to be here.

My new home is on six acres in the country and I have lots of room for walks with Dad and Mom and I'm the only fur friend in the house. Just think of all the love and attention I will get, how great is that!!! I met my Dad's sister's fur kid Cookie, she's a yellow Lab and doesn't look anything like me. We got along great, however Dad wouldn't let me off the leash because their yard isn't fenced in. Maybe when I get better trained and more comfortable with my new people and environment I will be free to roam at their house. They have two boys that I didn't get to meet yet - they were in school. I'm sure to have fun with them though, they like to throw sticks and balls for us to fetch. Dad said I'll get a lot of practice.

I met my Dad's daughter Angela, and she has a cat. I was good and didn't pay much attention to her. The cat hissed at me on occasion, I think she was jealous because Angela showed attention to me. She also said I was handsome, there goes Dad again (Jealous). I get to meet her boyfriend's kids this weekend and that should be fun.

I was introduced to my new vet, he also has a Golden Retriever who was rescued as a puppy and is now 3 years old. Now I know I will be in good hands. He looked me over and said I have a clean bill of health. He also showed Dad how to clean my ears properly. I was very calm during the examination except when he looked at my teeth, then I pulled my head away. I was given lots of treats because I was good.

It has been a busy few days and I'm tired so I'm going to go take a nap. Dad is sleeping, so I think I'll go jump on him and snuggle in. I want to thank RAGOM and Sue & Bill for taking care of me. You all have given me a second chance at life with a wonderful family. God Bless You All, I will stay in touch.
